The night was thick with anticipation as the Co-Driver pulled up beside Zhukov's vehicle. In the back seat, three Xiao Nianqing sat with grim expressions. The village chief waved them out, and one by one, they emerged from the car, standing in a line before him with their heads bowed, awaiting judgment.
"What are you all doing out here at this hour?" Xu Li stepped forward, lifting each Little Guy's chin to meet his gaze. Finally, he approached Zhukov and gave his cheek a light pat. "Every time your mother sees you, I know something's up. Spill it."
"Hehehe, Uncle, are you looking for Aunt Daria?" Zhukov smirked at the village chief, while the other Xiao Nianqing chuckled along. Xu Li didn't deny it. "You all dressed so formally—what's the plan?"
"There's a new dance hall that opened in Vatsk Town today. We thought we'd check it out," Gennadi Family's Lao San chimed in, sneaking a glance at the village chief. Seeing he remained silent, he continued, "My sister-in-law Nadia said there would be lots of girls there from their village too. We figured we’d try our luck."
"I see," Xu Li nodded. "Gennadi Family, take me first."
"Sure thing, Uncle!" The young man opened the car door for the village chief and waited for him to get in before turning the vehicle around to drop him off. Soon after, he joyfully picked up his friends again. Once they were all inside, he handed each of them two packs of Tian Xing candy. "Just don’t let the village lose face by being caught outside."
The village chief truly looked out for us, Zhukov grinned as he stuffed the Tian Xing into his pocket, blending into the dark military green of the night.
As New Year approached, children who had gone away to study began returning to the village. What had once been a quiet place suddenly buzzed with life; groups of children were everywhere—building snowmen, setting off fireworks, and playing games.
"Mom! We’re back!" Zhuo Ya and Irina entered the living room with bags in hand.
With a thud, their bags dropped to the floor as they spotted two Qi Qin women lounging on the sofa with prominent bellies, munching on cucumbers. Anna waved at Irina. "Let me see if you've gained any weight."
"Mom, when did you have yours?" Irina asked as she touched Anna's belly and then Eva's. "Wow! You're both so big now!"
"Yes, almost five months along," Anna replied.
She reached out to pat Irina's head and then looked at Zhuo Ya, who had just taken off her outer coat. "Is it from Petrisa's family?"
It is said that in two days, we will be heading to Huaxia, where there are several qualification matches. He needs to accumulate battle experience; just practicing won't be enough.
Zhuo Ya scratched the head of the little white dog and said, "Lisa wanted to come with us, but Old Liu insists on taking her to Huaxia." They are better off together.
Eva kicked Lao San's calf with her foot and said, "Get Mom a bottle of Coconut Milk."
As they were chatting in the living room, Valery brought his child into the yard. "Anna! Anna!"
"What’s wrong, Uncle Valery?"
Zhuo Ya put on a coat and walked into the yard. Valery pointed at the locked storage shed and said, "We're here to move the kitchenware and tableware. The day after tomorrow, Ivan and Lana are hosting a banquet."
