Zhukov adjusted his new clothes sent from Aunt Anna in Huaxia and pointed to his blue windbreaker. "See this? It's the latest model from Hongxing Erke. Can any of those country bumpkins around here compare with me? Not a chance!"
Larry and the others glanced at Zhukov, who had just gotten up from the dance floor. Looking at their own outfits, which were quite similar, and then at the simple clothes worn by the country folk, they felt Zhukov was right. How could these bumpkins compare to them? Every one of them came from a family with some means.
Thinking about their fathers' well-filled pockets gave them a boost of confidence. They began to giggle and scan the room for potential targets.
"Shall we have a drink together?" Maria asked.
Zhukov grabbed two cocktails and approached Maria, who was still dancing with her friends. The young girl had a rare doll-like face typical of Slavic beauty. She smiled and shook her head, "I still have five good friends with me; I can't drink alone."
"Hey, what's the big deal? I'll treat you all!" He sidestepped and made a comical bow. The girls giggled and moved to the booth. The young men immediately stood up to offer their seats, and after a moment's thought, they moved a few chairs to encircle the other half of the booth, ordering several bottles of the most expensive liquor from the bar.
Who cares if it tastes good? It's all about face!
"Thank you!" The girls accepted their drinks, and after some self-introductions, they took a sip and began sizing up the young men across from them. Each wore similarly stylish new clothes, prompting Maria to tease, "Are you guys brothers? You're all wearing matching outfits."
"Haha, we're not brothers by blood, but we might as well be," Larry grinned back. Gennadi Family's Lao San Valentin nodded in agreement and joked, "If we get into trouble, none of us will escape—what else could we be if not brothers?"
"You really are funny," a slender girl giggled, covering her mouth as she looked Valentin up and down. He had an ordinary bowl-cut hairstyle and a somewhat handsome face; his neck was thick and strong, suggesting he was a robust young man despite being hidden under his clothes.
Crossing his legs while smoking, he wore a pair of Hongxing Erke's winter models that cost over twenty thousand Rubles at the exclusive store in Irkutsk. The cigarette boxes on the table were brands she had never seen before—each looked quite pricey.
As she assessed him, her friends were also observing. Maria turned to Zhukov and asked, "You guys should be around our age. Are you studying in Bratsk or Irkutsk?"
The young men exchanged glances for a moment before shrugging simultaneously. Larry took a sip from his glass and replied, "We stopped studying long ago; we work on a ranch in the village. Our monthly salary is less than ninety thousand Rubles. We're just waiting for our elders to retire so we can take over."
"A ranch in the village?" A chubby girl pondered for a moment before clapping her hands together. "You’re from Hongqi Village?"
Seeing the young men nodding, her eyes lit up. "Do you need more people at your ranch?"
The boys quickly shook their heads; they couldn't let that slip out. What if someone else came to snatch up positions that were already saturated? What would happen to their brothers?
Maria noticed the longing in her best friend's eyes. As she turned to leave, she bumped into her partner and smiled at Zhukov. "Let's keep dancing," she said.
