"Then I won't hit you anymore, okay?"
With tears in her eyes, Liliya got up and walked around the coffee table to sit beside Andrei. Seeing her husband cower closer to the village chief, she felt a pang of discomfort in her heart. She took his large hand and rested her head on his shoulder. "My dear, I really won't hit you anymore. Please don't divorce me, okay?"
"You said the same thing last year on Men's Day," Andrei replied, clearly not believing his wife's words. "You say you won't hit me, but every time you do, it gets harder!"
"It's not easy for you two to be together. How about this?" Xu Li thought for a moment and looked at Liliya. "A man can't be without money outside. From now on, give him three hundred thousand rubles in change every month. Also, make sure to discipline your children properly so they don't learn from you and bully Andrei all the time. After all, Andrei is their father."
"I'll go down and teach them a lesson right away," Liliya nodded repeatedly, then turned to her silent husband. "Is that okay, dear?"
"Forget it, don't hit the kids. They can't take it like I can; what if something happens?" Andrei shook his head after thinking it over.
Xu Li brushed off some ash from his cigarette. "Also, write a guarantee today that you won't hit Andrei without reason from now on. If he comes to us complaining again in the future, we won't help you persuade him anymore; then you'll just have to cry!"
"I won't do it again!" Liliya quickly hugged Andrei's neck and showered him with kisses on his face and lips. "Misha, let's go home. I'll help you with some medicinal wine; it's all my fault. Please don't be angry, okay?"
As she tried to pull Andrei away, Xu Li shot her a glare and pointed at the coffee table with his thick finger. "Write the guarantee for me."
"Oh."
She quickly pressed her handprint on the guarantee and left it on Xu Li's desk before linking arms with her husband as they walked out. Xu Li picked up the guarantee and glanced at it before getting up to open the right display cabinet. Inside was a small redwood box where he placed the guarantee.
After pondering for a moment, he took out some paper from inside and sighed. "What a pity! This is already the third time; if this continues, our village's reputation will be ruined by these troublesome girls."
"Mommy, please don't hit me!"
The sound of children crying came from downstairs. Xu Li leaned out of the window and saw Liliya chasing their eldest son and daughter around with a broomstick handle. Andrei raised his hand as if to intervene but hesitated, feeling both apprehensive and somewhat amused.
Since the whole family had gone to the village together and Andrei had taken a week off work, they decided to stay at his father-in-law's house for a few days. Before leaving, both cars were packed full of fruits, potatoes, vegetables, and frozen meat.
The two cars drove one after the other towards a village east of Bratsk—Andrei's hometown. After getting out of the car and adjusting his long-sleeved shirt, he put half of the beef and pork he brought into his mother's freezer.
Seeing his mother's appreciative smile and Little Sister's surprised expression upon seeing watermelons and strawberries made him feel resigned. Before leaving, he went to the bathroom and noticed his wife stuffing a thick wad of cash into Little Sister's hands.
On their way there, Liliya's car was ahead while he drove slowly behind her. He sighed to himself: aside from hitting me, Liliya is pretty perfect! Let's just make do with life!
The two cars returned to Bratsk one after another.
