Katyusha, who was several years older than him, unexpectedly called him "uncle," which delighted both of them. With a smug grin, he playfully patted Katyusha on the shoulder and said, "Good girl, Uncle will let you set off fireworks."
As he spoke, he pulled out a box of small goldfish and a bundle of Fairy Sticks from his backpack and handed them to Katyusha. "Have fun and take care of your little brother."
"Okay!"
Katyusha took the Fairy Sticks and the small goldfish, leading her giggling brother outside to the open space. Meanwhile, Xu Weihua and Xu Weixia chatted in their familiar circle. Yekaterina was surrounded by several young women who were praising her so much that she felt shy and kept burrowing into her mother's embrace.
In the busy kitchen, Xu Li was surrounded by a few eager young men who were learning cooking skills while helping out. A few women brought in a processed reindeer, its bones already removed, leaving plenty of meat. However, he glanced at the bustling Dining Hall.
Lighting a cigarette, he stepped outside and waved to the laughing young men. "Ivan Lariev, go kill another reindeer at the deer shed. Hurry up!"
"Got it, Uncle!"
The young men nodded and left the cafeteria. Seeing their children playing happily, they hopped into their vehicles and sped towards the northeast deer shed. By the time they arrived, Yegor and a few men guarding the shed were packing up to head to the cafeteria.
"Yegor, the village chief wants another reindeer killed; the last one wasn’t enough," Ivan explained as soon as he got out of the car.
Yegor shrugged and led them into the shed. Soon enough, they pulled out a robust male reindeer. The young men stepped forward to help with bleeding, skinning, and deboning it. Once they finished, they looked towards the reindeer's meat.
Larryf's eyes lit up. "I'll take it back for drinks tomorrow night at my place. Let Natasha make soup; we can enjoy it with roasted meat."
"Sounds good!"
Yegor and the others had no objections; this amount would be enough for all of them. After packing up the meat into their vehicles, several trucks soon drove in unison towards Dining Hall number one at the cattle shed.
"Make way! Make way!"
Larryf and Ivan, along with a few others, grabbed the reindeer skins while carrying processed reindeer meat inside to report back to the kitchen. Yegor and his group stayed outside, watching the children play.
"Uncle! Uncle!"
"I want fireworks too!"
"Uncle! Me too!"
The children surrounded Xu Jiaxi and Xu Jiatai, calling out "uncle" for more bundles of Fairy Sticks and boxes of small goldfish. If they called out a couple more times, they might even get a box of firecrackers or a bundle of skyrockets.
"Sister! Sister!"
After finishing with her Fairy Sticks, Katyusha found Natasha sitting at a table playing on her phone. The little girl had grown up beautifully, perfectly inheriting her mother's looks. Quietly sitting at the table, she looked down at her younger sister who was shaking her legs.
She gently tidied up her sister's messy hair and asked, "What's wrong?"
The fireworks had ended, but I still wanted more. Katyusha looked eagerly at her older sister, while the Little Ones gazed up at her, tugging at her leg and chanting, "Sister, fireworks, fireworks!"
Natasha glanced at her younger sister and brother, then at the group of children outside the cafeteria. She put her phone back in her pocket, took the hand of her younger brother, and led him out of the cafeteria. They found Xu Jiaxi and Xu Jiatai, who were still basking in the compliments from the little ones.
