"Ivan, have you noticed something off?"
The burly man sitting in the passenger seat glanced at the rearview mirror, his brow slightly furrowed. "That black van has been following us for over an hour."
"Hahaha, you're just too nervous, Andrei," Ivan replied, grinning as he drove. "It’s possible they’re just going the same way as us."
Just then, the vehicle behind them accelerated to match their speed. Ivan and Andrei both turned to look out the window, their eyes widening as the side door of the van slowly opened. Under their watchful gaze, a silencer spat flames: "Brrrttt!"
With a loud crash, a black Honda burst from the side of the road and crashed into the bushes. The van's door slammed shut as it accelerated alongside the Hongqi in front. The driver glanced at the road sign ahead and suddenly swerved towards it: "Bang! Crash! Thud!"
The van came to a stop after colliding with the signpost. Three heavily armed men jumped out, smashing the car window with their gunstocks. They pulled an elderly couple from their vehicle and shoved them into the van. The last man to enter shot both the driver and Andrei before getting in and speeding away.
Outside, snow fell heavily in the dark night, with only an occasional car passing by. No one stopped to check on the driver who had crashed into the signpost or to see if he needed help.
"Eliza, stop playing around and call your brother and sisters to get ready for dinner."
A woman in her forties brought prepared dishes to the dining table. After loosening her apron and patting her daughter's head, she walked into the bedroom, slowly sitting on the edge of the bed and gently stroking her husband's cheek. "Misha, Mom and Dad are almost here; let’s eat."
"Okay."
The man had a fierce look with a large hooked nose but smiled at his gentle wife. He sat up and stretched lazily. "It feels great to finally get some sleep. Are Mom and Dad back?"
"They just called; they're on their way."
The woman went to wash her face and touch up her makeup while the man headed to the living room, picking up his youngest daughter and kissing her cheek. "Liya, sweetie, don’t eat too many sweets; they’ll make you gain weight and get cavities."
"I like candy!"
The little girl wrapped her arms around her father's neck, wiggling her bottom playfully. "Daddy, today is my birthday! I invited Katyusha and her friends over to play, but they’re ignoring me."
"It’s okay; you can try inviting them again in a couple of days; they won’t say no."
A flash of fierceness crossed the man's eyes before he gently comforted his youngest daughter. A chubby boy sat beside him. "Dad, my birthday is in half a month; what are you planning to get us?"
"What do you want?"
Beep beep beep.
The electronic security door was being unlocked with a code, making the alert man release his daughter and quickly stride to the door. Peering through the peephole to confirm it was his parents, he still reached into a hidden compartment by the door; his parents always used keys to enter and never pressed the code lock.
He quickly glanced around, then opened the closet by the entrance and slipped inside. After shifting to the corner of the wardrobe, he carefully opened a hidden compartment and crawled in. He took out his phone and sent a message to his subordinate, urging him to hurry and bring the necessary tools. After a moment of thought, he also sent a distress message to the Deputy Director, who often received gifts from him.
