She tugged at the man's right arm and led him outside: the cemetery, Ali must be with his mother.
The man pressed his lips together and said nothing. After changing his shoes and putting on a coat, he stepped out the door. Li Yanhong drove him to the cemetery gate, where they happened to run into the security guard.
After getting out of the car, Li Yanhong hurriedly asked, "Sir, have you seen a teenager around here in the past few days? About one seventy tall, skinny."
The guard, who looked to be in his fifties, glanced at the two and nodded. "The kid is over there. I just spoke with him. You can go ahead; take him home and have a good talk. He hasn't been going to school and just sits in front of his mother's grave all day."
With that, he ignored them and returned to his post in the security booth. Watching their retreating figures, he spat on the ground, muttering to himself about how strange it was for someone to hang around a cemetery all day.
Actually, Li Yanhong had been quite good to me over the years, driving me to and from school and taking care of my meals and rest. I felt it was wrong to hit her, but I hadn't thought much about it at the time.
That old wall was the worst; he always said I never talked about that thin wall.
After my mother passed away, my first birthday was spent with him and Li Yanhong. For my second birthday, only Li Yanhong bought me a cake. After they had their own child, they stopped celebrating my birthday altogether.
That old wall was always busy with business on my birthdays and never asked me what I wanted.
He cared a lot for his younger son; it seemed like I was just an afterthought in his eyes.
If only you were still here, Mom. That old wall wouldn't bully me like this.
Let me sing for you again. Once I'm done, I'll head back. Next time I have some free time, I'll come talk to you again.
It had been three days since I last saw Xu Li. My outer clothes were a bit dirty, and my overall spirit felt low. In front of the grave lay a wilted bouquet of flowers along with several empty instant noodle cups, sausage wrappers, and plastic bottles.
Only Mom Is Good In The World
With a mother, a child is like a treasure.
In her embrace, happiness is unparalleled.
Only Mom Is Good In The World
Without a mother, a child is like grass.
Leaving her embrace, where can happiness be found?
Only Mom Is Good In The World
A child with a mother is like a treasure.
In the embrace of a mother,
Happiness is beyond measure.
After singing, Xu Li wiped his tears with his hand, kissed the black-and-white photo of his mother, and carefully wiped the tombstone with his sleeve. Only then did he bow three times before her grave.
Standing up, he looked at his mother's smiling photo and grinned: "Don't worry about me, Mom. I've grown up! In the future, I will definitely find a woman as wonderful as you and have many children to bring to see you!"
After saying this, he stood up and brushed off the dirt from his knees, waving goodbye to the photo on the tombstone: "Goodbye, Mom!"
When he reached the entrance, he noticed the family car and frowned slightly before walking into the security booth: "Uncle Zhao, where are they?"
"They were looking for you. You didn't touch anything?"
Uncle Zhao looked at the somewhat disheveled boy and sighed: "Live well, Little Guy. Live brilliantly and make a name for yourself; that’s the best revenge against them! After all, they are your father and stepmother. As a junior, if you take action against them, it will only backfire."
"Okay, I understand, sir. Thank you!"
Uncle Zhao pinched the young man's arm and saw two people approaching in the distance: "They're here. Don't do anything foolish, alright?"
"Okay, I'm leaving now!"
Xu Li bowed gratefully to the old man before exiting the booth. He glanced at the two people and opened the car door to get in without waiting for them. The man wanted to express his gratitude to Uncle Zhao, but the old man merely waved him off and closed the door.
Feeling somewhat awkward, the man got into the car. Li Yanhong glanced at the rearview mirror, pursed her lips, and drove home. Afterward, she called the police to inform them that they had found the child and expressed her thanks before hanging up.
For the next week, Xu Li didn’t go to school; he stayed cooped up in his room all day long. He would eat during meal times and then retreat back to his bedroom to rest afterward. Meanwhile, the man handled paperwork and made phone calls to business partners he had met once before, chatting for quite some time.
That morning, Xu Lei was discharged from the hospital and happened to see Xu Li sitting on the sofa at home. Frightened, he shrank behind the man and used him as a shield before limping back to his bedroom and locking the door behind him.
Xu Li grabbed his bag and was the first to head out downstairs. Li Yanhong tugged at the man's sleeve: "You should talk to him."
"How can I? Look at him; do you think he’ll listen?"
The man sighed and went downstairs with Li Yanhong. They drove Xu Li to the airport. Along the way, Li Yanhong tried several times to speak but couldn’t find any words; she could only sigh while looking out of the window.
They waited in the airport lobby for about an hour until an announcement for boarding their flight rang out. Xu Li took his passport and ticket, slung his bag over his shoulder, and walked toward the boarding gate.
The man and Li Yanhong also stood up to see him off. As Xu Li walked away, he felt he should say something but turned around just in time to see a long vehicle filled with various boxes and bags blocking their view of each other. Xu Li bit his lip and turned back toward the boarding gate while the man mustered his courage to reach out with his right hand in an attempt to talk to him one last time. However, that damned vehicle obstructed him right then and there.
After Li Che was pushed away, he caught sight of Xu Li walking into the boarding gate, her lonely figure carrying a bag.
Sighing deeply, he suddenly slapped himself, the loud sound attracting the attention of many travelers. Li Yanhong's eyes were slightly moist as she tugged at the man's sleeve, and together they turned away in desolation.
Soon, an airplane took off into the sky, carrying a modest number of passengers, eventually disappearing into the clouds.
