I trembled as I hung up the phone, my heart racing as if it were about to leap out of my chest.
Cold sweat soaked my shirt, and a chill ran down my back.
I leaned against the table, my legs weak, nearly unable to stand.
My wife, Li Wei, looked at me with concern. "Was it that call again?"
Her voice was gentle and caring, yet it pierced my nerves like a needle.
I nodded weakly, too afraid to tell her that the voice on the other end belonged to the man I had drowned five years ago.
The scene from that rainy night flashed back into my mind—the cold rain, the man's desperate eyes, and my trembling hands…
I began to visit Doctor Li's office frequently. He was a refined middle-aged man who always wore a gentle smile and patiently listened to my stories.
His office was simply yet warmly decorated, with a faint scent of lavender lingering in the air, but it did nothing to dispel the gloom within me.
"How has your sleep been lately?" Doctor Li asked as he flipped through my medical records, his brow slightly furrowed.
His voice was deep and magnetic, providing a sense of reassurance.
"Very poor. I hardly sleep at all," I replied wearily, rubbing my temples. "I keep having nightmares, dreaming about…"
I paused, unwilling to bring up that rainy night again—the night that robbed me of my peace forever.
Doctor Li adjusted his glasses. "Can you describe your dreams in detail?"
His gaze was filled with concern and curiosity, as if he wanted to see deep into the depths of my soul.
I took a deep breath, struggling to recall those terrifying images. "I dreamt of him, that man. He was soaked through, his face pale, reaching out to choke me..."
My voice trembled, as if that man were truly standing before me, his cold fingers tightening around my throat.
I felt my breath quicken, a sharp pain twisting in my chest.
Doctor Li handed me a glass of water. "Take your time, don’t be nervous."
I took a sip, feeling slightly calmer as the warm water flowed down my throat, offering a momentary comfort.
"He also spoke to me, saying I couldn't escape..." My voice continued to shake, nearly inaudible.
"What did he say?" Doctor Li pressed gently, his tone warm yet firm, encouraging me to continue.
"He said he would come back for me..." My voice was low and hoarse, as if it were a whisper rising from the depths of hell.
Doctor Li jotted down notes. "Besides the nightmares, have you experienced anything else?"
He looked up at me with piercing eyes, as if trying to uncover all my secrets.
I hesitated for a moment but ultimately decided to share. "I... I always feel like he’s right beside me. I can hear his voice, whispering in my ear..."
My heart raced again, fear surging like a tidal wave.
Doctor Li pondered for a moment. "This could be a projection of something from your past in your subconscious. You feel guilt and fear, which is likely causing these hallucinations."
His tone was calm and objective, attempting to explain everything I had been experiencing with his professional knowledge.
I covered my face in anguish. "But those phone calls..."
The phone calls were so real, so clear, that I couldn't believe they were just my imagination.
"Phone calls?" Doctor Li looked up at me, a hint of confusion flashing in his eyes.
I told him about the anonymous calls I had received recently, including the familiar voice on the other end, the voice that sent chills down my spine.
I could even feel the cold breath from the other side of the line, as if that man was standing right behind me, whispering against my neck.
Doctor Li listened quietly to my account. "Have you considered that these calls might just be a prank?"
His tone remained calm, trying to encourage me to view the situation rationally.
"A prank?" I shook my head with a bitter smile. "That's impossible. I can never forget that voice; it's him, the one I... five years ago..."
I choked on my words, unable to continue. The image of that rainy night resurfaced vividly in my mind, refusing to fade away.
Doctor Li comforted me. "Calm down. This is likely just your imagination; your mental state is very unstable right now."
He tried to soothe me, but deep down, I knew I could never calm down again.
I leaned weakly against the back of the chair, wishing fervently that Doctor Li was right and that all of this was merely a figment of my imagination.
How I wished this was just a nightmare and that everything would return to normal once I woke up.
Just then, my phone suddenly rang, displaying an unfamiliar number on the screen.
My hand trembled uncontrollably as a chill shot from my toes to the top of my head.
I felt as if my blood had frozen, and breathing became increasingly difficult.
Doctor Li noticed my distress. "What’s wrong?"
His voice was filled with concern, but I found myself unable to respond.
I pointed at my phone screen. "It's that number again..."
My voice trembled, barely audible.
Taking a deep breath, I pressed the answer button. On the other end, there was a busy signal, followed by a deep voice that asked, "Are you okay?"
It was his voice, clear and cold, as if whispering right beside me.
My mind went blank as fear and despair consumed me.
I abruptly hung up the phone, trembling uncontrollably, feeling as if I was on the brink of collapse.
Doctor Li asked anxiously, "Are you alright?"
I shook my head, overwhelmed by fear and despair. I knew I could no longer escape my past.
I understood that I would forever live in this nightmare, unable to find release.
