Chang Qing had just regained his senses when a grotesquely disfigured face came into view. He instinctively frowned and took a few steps back, only to realize that the figure before him was utterly unrecognizable. The person's clothes were tattered, stained with dried blood, and their flesh appeared to have been gnawed by wild beasts, exposing a large section of their cheekbone. The left foot twisted at an unnatural angle, as if some external force was dragging the body forward.
Was this a corpse refinement? It didn’t seem so. Some Evil Cultivators would indeed make corpses look terrifying to intimidate their enemies, but this creature moved far too slowly.
The monster across from him let out a raspy sound, as if its throat was clogged, and raised its hands as it shuffled toward him.
Did it really think it could hurt him with such a slow approach? Chang Qing hefted the steel pipe in his hand and swung it, effortlessly severing one of the monster's arms. He then stepped back a few paces to create distance. Strangely, the creature seemed oblivious to pain; it merely changed direction and continued dragging itself toward him.
"System?" Chang Qing called out in his mind.
"Host, this is a Zombie; its head is its weak point," the system replied.
Just as the system finished speaking, Chang Qing hurled the steel pipe, which struck the Zombie squarely in the head with a sickening crunch. With a splatter of dark green liquid, the Zombie collapsed to the ground as if it had suddenly lost all support.
After dealing with the Zombie, Chang Qing began to survey his surroundings. It appeared he was inside a store; several rows of shelves stood empty around him, devoid of any supplies. He sensed that this world contained no Lingqi. It seemed he wouldn’t be able to cultivate here. However, he was unconcerned; each world had different rules, and he would adapt.
Finding no other threats in the room, he decided to check the storyline. This was a small world derived from a novel titled "In the Apocalypse, Spending One Billion at the Start."
The male lead, Chen Jin, had struggled for ten years in the apocalypse, enduring humiliation. One day he was reborn to before the apocalypse and unexpectedly bound to an enormous Spatial Jade Pendant. Having learned the value of resources from his previous life’s hardships, he immediately entered "buying mode." The male lead managed to hide in his family villa's basement during the initial turmoil and awakened his Thunder Ability. From there, he began to thrive in the apocalypse. With abundant resources and formidable strength, leveraging his foresight advantage, he took in powerful figures from his past life as subordinates and sought revenge against those who had bullied him previously. He established one of the strongest bases in the apocalypse and became a prominent figure.
Throughout this journey, his romantic endeavors flourished; there was no woman he couldn't charm. From innocent neighbors to alluring Underworld Princesses, from icy school beauties to domineering female CEOs—each was captivated by his charisma. These women were goddesses in others' eyes but willingly set aside their pride for him; they treated each other like sisters and even generously helped him select other outstanding women... One line in the text described him: "Awake to control power over the world; intoxicated at beauty's knee."
Chang Qing: ??? Wasn’t it just about establishing the largest base? There were seven bases nationwide; their strengths weren't vastly different—what kind of power over the world was that? In ancient times, he'd barely be considered a minor lord.
"But this seems unrelated to the original character?" he asked the system.
"Host, take a closer look at the part of the plot regarding how the male lead establishes his base," the system advised.
So Chang Qing turned back and searched until he found details related to the original character.
The original character Yang Changqing was merely an inconspicuous Little Cannon Fodder in the story. The Yang Family was among Nancheng's wealthiest families; Yang Changqing's parents had started from a small clothing business and rapidly amassed wealth during reforms to create a conglomerate worth hundreds of billions. Yang Father and Yang Mother were a couple who had endured hardships together and built their empire side by side; they were deeply affectionate toward their only son and spoiled him greatly.
Due to Yang Father and Yang Mother's busy work schedules and their unlimited financial support for him, Yang Changqing had grown somewhat spoiled. He spent money lavishly and surrounded himself with aimless rich kids who skipped classes, played games, raced cars—causing no small amount of trouble that left Yang Father and Yang Mother exasperated.
Naturally, Yang Changqing did poorly on his college entrance exams; thus Yang Father donated a building to secure his admission into Nancheng University’s preparatory class. They had considered sending him abroad but were deterred by extreme weather patterns and frequent plagues in recent years; coupled with their son's lack of self-sufficiency made them uneasy.
Once at university, Yang Changqing continued his carefree lifestyle of indulgence which disappointed his parents greatly. Consequently, Yang Father and Yang Mother arranged a marriage for him with Xu Caiwei—the daughter of the Xu Family.
The Xu Family had risen through real estate in Nancheng but faced financial difficulties due to missteps during company restructuring and sabotage from rivals. In such circumstances gaining support was challenging; after all, it's easier to add flowers than provide timely assistance during hardship—hence Father Xu considered an alliance through marriage.
Xu Caiwei was carefully nurtured by her family; not only was she beautiful but also academically gifted—she entered Nancheng University’s business management program with high marks. Both Yang Father and Yang Mother were very pleased with her while Yang Changqing took quite a liking to her as well. Soon after they held an engagement ceremony which also alleviated some of the Xu Family's crisis.
