Her indifferent attitude only piqued the original host's interest further, leading him to go out of his way to send her gifts and make her smile. She enjoyed the pan-fried dumplings from the west side of the city, so he often woke up early to drive there and deliver them to her dormitory. She had a crush on a certain young celebrity, and he invited that celebrity to endorse his products, hoping to arrange a dinner for her with her idol. He also paid attention to the little rituals that girls cared about; no matter the occasion—birthdays or holidays—he always organized special events... The more he invested, the more humble he became, until eventually, Father Xu and Mother Xu privately remarked that he was not only uneducated but also lacked ambition.
When disaster struck, chaos engulfed the school. Xu Caiwei and her roommates were too afraid to venture outside, so the original host took it upon himself to search for food, scouring the school cafeteria and nearby supermarkets and shops.
A month later, the officials announced the establishment of the first human base in the north. The group decided to return home and take their parents with them to escape to the base. After picking up Xu Family parents and younger brother, they arrived at Yang Family's place, only to find that Yang Father and Yang Mother were not home. The original host intended to stay for a few days in search of his parents, but the Xu Family and others disagreed, stating that officials had sent people there and that Yang Father and Yang Mother might have already gone with them to the base. Without further thought, they set off together.
Throughout their journey, various issues arose within the Xu Family. Xu Mother had health problems with diabetes, while Father Xu suffered from high blood pressure and needed insulin and other medications from city hospitals. Younger brother Xu Zhou was a complete brat, constantly demanding snacks and throwing tantrums along the way, which brought significant danger to their group. Although Xu Caiwei was better off than her brother, she was still a sheltered young lady who couldn't contribute much.
Despite his academic shortcomings, the original host was quick-witted and resourceful; his skills from racing and fighting proved invaluable in this apocalyptic world, making him the protector of their small team. Whether it was finding routes or battling zombies or searching for food and water, he was always at the forefront.
Two months after zombies appeared, humans began awakening abilities—some naturally while others awakened after being bitten by zombies. The original host awakened a Wood Ability while Xu Caiwei awakened a Water Ability. Initially, officials categorized abilities into three types: enhancement abilities focused on strengthening senses, speed, and strength; elemental abilities encompassing metal, wood, water, fire, earth, lightning, wind, ice; and special abilities like Spatial Ability or X-ray vision.
After awakening their abilities, life for their team became somewhat easier. The Wood Ability allowed him to grow plants for vegetables while her Water Ability provided drinking water. In an apocalypse where vegetables were extremely scarce—supermarkets stocked only long-lasting items like biscuits and noodles—the original host not only drove around searching for food and battling zombies but also had to cultivate vegetables tirelessly every day.
In their relationship dynamics, he remained in a humble position; thus he could only double down on being good to Xu Caiwei and her family in hopes of winning her over with kindness. However, this effort yielded disappointing results. The more he gave, the more it seemed taken for granted; Xu Caiwei remained lukewarm towards him while Father Xu and Mother Xu constantly criticized him for not bringing back enough food or for growing vegetables that didn't taste as good as before; Brother Xu complained about not finding his desired toys or snacks.
Eventually, they encountered a team led by the male protagonist on a mission and accepted an invitation to join his base—a small society with a complete operational mechanism where all goods required points for exchange. Points could be earned by defeating zombies for Crystal Cores or through labor within the base.
As an ability user, the original host was reluctant to work in agriculture like ordinary people since points earned through such labor were minimal—barely enough for survival needs each day. Xu Caiwei's Water Ability lacked offensive capabilities; she could only provide enough water for their household needs—not enough for trading points—while Father Xu and Mother Xu refused labor due to health issues; Brother Xu was too young at eight years old. Thus, all responsibilities fell on him. By day he fought zombies for points; by night he cultivated vegetables—his life was exceedingly arduous.
During this time, he proposed marriage multiple times to the Xu Family but was consistently rejected on grounds of needing further evaluation of his character. He also attempted contacting other bases in search of his parents but all efforts ended in vain.
Three years passed like this. Due to constant busyness day and night without time or Crystal Cores for cultivation while most ability users in the base reached level three or higher—and Brother Xu awakening a Fire Ability—his own ability level stagnated at level two. At this point it became increasingly difficult for him to form teams; venturing out alone posed greater risks with even less satisfactory returns.
Finally one day, the Xu Family parents proposed breaking off their engagement citing that they were progressing while he had fallen behind. What could he do? He could only grit his teeth and endure.
Afterward life became significantly easier for him; his ability level improved faster as well. He even planned to seek out other bases for his parents once reaching level four in abilities. However before he could set off again during a zombie tide he recognized his parents who had turned into zombies.
He used his ability to trap his zombified parents intending to keep them until a cure could be developed in hopes of treatment—after all in this era where both humans and zombies could mutate anything was possible. Moreover the base had developed freezing services for zombified family members requiring high maintenance points.
He approached the Xu Family hoping they would lend him some points out of past kindness but no one agreed; they stood on moral high ground accusing him of selfishness endangering public safety while claiming that once infected by zombie virus even if bodies hadn’t decayed they could no longer be called "human," thus wasting points was unnecessary.
This infuriated him. When the Xu Family company faced crises it was Yang Father and Yang Mother who provided financial assistance; during outbreaks it was he who led everyone north seeking refuge; after stability returned it was also he who worked tirelessly ensuring survival needs for everyone. Now simply wanting to borrow some points they spoke such heartless words.
Thus he left with his parents from the base intending to continue north towards Official Base. Along the way they were ambushed by ability users; their entire family turned into ashes amidst flames.
