As a wave of hot wind swept through, the two figures sprang into action.
Chang Qing intended to test the extent of his ability's enhancement on his body, so he pushed his speed to the limit. With the Thorn Sword in hand, he created a whirlwind on the stage. In an instant, the crowd could only see a blur, as the seemingly frail young man appeared to split into dozens of shadows, surrounding Hu Yan Zan. His attacks came in a relentless flurry, reminiscent of special effects in a movie.
Hu Yan Zan was momentarily stunned; he saw the figure before him suddenly vanish, followed by a sharp pain in his shoulder. Before he could react, a wave of stinging pain coursed through his entire body. This was bad! He realized he was up against a speed-type ability user. However, this level of damage was nothing to him; he just needed to withstand the first wave of attacks.
A loud roar erupted from the stage, and the temperature in the arena surged instantly. The audience felt as if they had been placed next to a volcano.
"It's Lava!" someone shouted.
At that moment, Chang Qing ceased his assault and retreated to the side, his Thorn Sword emitting wisps of white smoke from the intense heat.
Only then did the crowd see that Hu Yan Zan was completely engulfed in lava; no, it would be more accurate to say that he had transformed into a Lava Man.
The tension among those seated was palpable. Bai Bing clenched her fists; she knew all too well how formidable this Lava Man was. The high temperatures were enough to defy even glaciers, and it left her feeling helpless. She was curious about how Chang Qing would respond to such a scenario.
Chang Qing showed no signs of concern. As the Lava Man charged at him, he stepped back while counting down.
"10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5..." Just as he reached five, the Lava Man's steps slowed down. Before he could utter four, Hu Yan Zan collapsed with a thud.
The scattered lava was blocked by a wave of azure light emitted by Chang Qing and slowly fell to the ground with a hissing sound. The lava on Hu Yan Zan gradually receded, revealing his original form.
"There's poison!" His voice came out hoarsely, weak like that of an old man.
"The rules didn't say I couldn't use poison," Chang Qing replied as he sheathed his Thorn Sword and turned his gaze toward the host.
The host finally snapped back to reality and stepped onto the stage. "Challenge successful! Mr. Yang Changqing has successfully challenged Seat One."
At that moment, everyone finally realized that the battle had come to an end.
After a brief silence, a round of applause erupted, quickly spreading through the crowd.
Li Jun rushed forward and hugged Chang Qing tightly. " brother Qing, I knew you would definitely take first place!"
Bai Bing and others also came forward to congratulate him, and soon, Chang Qing was surrounded by people from all sides.
Chen Jin sat in his seat, his face filled with shock. When he saw Chang Qing being encircled by the crowd, his expression turned even more unwilling. But there was nothing he could do; even second place might not be remembered by the audience, let alone his mere third place.
Chang Qing paid him no mind. He thanked everyone one by one and then followed the process to receive his reward before heading back to the hotel. After all, dealing with the male lead was not his task, and he didn't care what Chen Jin thought.
Back at the hotel, it was another lively scene. After finally managing to return to his room, he took out the reward he had received to examine it closely.
It was a simple water droplet-shaped jade pendant, which appeared to have some flaws and lacked a smooth, lustrous feel.
With a thought, Chang Qing entered the space within the jade pendant.
Chang Qing: ?? Do I not need to drop blood to recognize it as my own?
"It might be a space item with damaged functionality," the system replied somewhat helplessly.
The space was about the size of a small room of twenty square meters, which could hold some items.
No wonder the Dragon Blood Mercenary Corps was willing to give it as a reward; since it didn’t require blood recognition, it could easily be stolen. The size of the space was insufficient for storing supplies for a team of dozens of people. Although it paled in comparison to the male lead Chen Jin's space that was several football fields large, it was still better than nothing. Chang Qing decided to wear it around his neck. At least the Dragon Blood Mercenary Corps had provided something tangible as a reward.
What could they gain from such an Arena Competition? This was what Chang Qing was currently pondering.
In the Cultivation World, there were events like the Sect Grand Competition, which were clearly designed to select and motivate outstanding disciples of the Sect. However, this Arena Competition was not an internal contest among mercenary groups; anyone passing by could participate.
“It’s obviously to recruit new members,” the system remarked, finding it quite evident. For a mercenary group to grow, they would need a large number of Ability users. Through such competitions, they could not only gather information about Ability users but also specifically recruit powerful ones.
Chang Qing felt that things might not be that simple. Ability users were easy to identify, and none would deliberately hide their identities. If recruitment was the goal, wouldn’t it be more convenient to negotiate terms directly? Why go through the trouble of organizing a competition?
“Who cares? Host, aren’t you leaving tomorrow?” The system seemed quite unconcerned.
“That’s true.” As long as it wouldn’t destroy the world or delay the completion of his mission, he decided not to worry about any ulterior motives. With that thought, he felt relieved.
So, when he received an invitation from the Dragon Blood Mercenary Corps to attend a banquet the next morning, Chang Qing was not surprised at all. He didn’t think much of it and instead helped everyone load their luggage onto the vehicle.
To his surprise, he saw Bai Bing directing her team to pack their belongings as well.
“I thought you guys were staying for the banquet,” Chang Qing said as he placed a large bag of clothes into the vehicle and turned to Bai Bing.
“We planned to set off this morning,” she replied logically. When she noticed the jade pendant hanging around Chang Qing’s neck, she added, “Don’t you have space for your things? Why bother using a vehicle?”
Just then, a rather unattractive delivery truck pulled up. “Mr. Yang, your goods have arrived,” the driver announced as he jumped out and opened the temperature-controlled compartment at the back of the truck, releasing a delicious aroma.
Everyone glanced inside and saw an assortment of roasted chickens, ducks, spicy rabbit heads, fried small fish, and even frozen hot pot and ice-cold beer.
"Thank you," Chang Qing said as he pulled out a small bag of Crystal Cores and tossed it to the driver. With a wave of his hand, an entire cart of food was stored away into his spatial pocket.
"This space has limited capacity, but it seems time stands still inside, making it perfect for preserving food," he explained with a smile.
The others exchanged glances, realizing they had underestimated him.
However, they also thought that although Chang Qing was powerful, he was relatively easy to talk to. They could always trade some Crystal Cores for delicious food later on to satisfy their cravings.
The happiest among them was undoubtedly Tang Xiaotang. After spending a few days together, Yang Father and Yang Mother treated her with more affection than their own son. Just last night, they had bought her a lot of snacks, candies, and even her favorite candied hawthorn, all of which were now stored in the spatial pocket.
"Grandpa and Grandma, I'm riding in your car!" Upon seeing Yang Father and Yang Mother approaching with their luggage, Tang Xiaotang bounced over and grabbed Yang Mother's hand.
"Alright!" Yang Mother beamed, her face crinkling into a joyful smile.
"You don't have a child seat in your car; that’s not safe," Chang Qing remarked as he walked over with a grin.
"Oh right, I forgot about that! We should have installed it yesterday," Yang Father said, slapping his forehead.
This journey wasn't just a trip; unexpected situations were bound to arise, and not having a child seat was indeed unsafe.
"Tang Xiaotang should sit with her mother," Yang Mother said, patting the little girl's head regretfully as she turned to Tang Yun who was walking over.
