I slowly opened my eyes, my consciousness gradually becoming clearer. The surroundings shifted from a blur to clarity, and the air was filled with a faint scent of smoke and herbs. It seemed I was in the disciples' quarters of Dan Pavilion.
A thin blanket covered me, and my limbs felt weak, but I was much better than when I had been unconscious. A disciple stood guard at the door; upon hearing movement, he pushed the door open and came in to feed me two bowls of some bitter liquid before leaving again.
The emptiness inside me was inexplicably soothed a little by the warm bitter brew, and I closed my eyes once more. In a daze, I felt a throbbing pain in my head, especially at my forehead. Struggling to open my eyes again, I realized it was already night.
Turning my head, I faced a dark shadow. My heart raced as I recognized the figure sitting by my bedside. Dressed in the attire of a female disciple from Wu Yuan Sect, it was Lan Xu’s face.
She held a small branch about the size of my palm and poked it at my forehead. I turned away and closed my eyes again. It seemed this time I really was dying; the hallucinations were intense.
A hand reached over to cover my mouth and nose, and with my limbs too weak to resist, I could only bite down hard. "Ouch! Alright, don’t be angry; it took me a lot of effort to find you," came a familiar voice.
I turned to look at him in the moonlight; it was indeed that chatterbox. He helped me sit up slightly, and with a flick of his hand, a barrier shimmered into existence for an instant before disappearing into the air.
"Are you alright?" I recalled seeing him severely injured alongside the giant python that day.
"I'm fine; just putting on a show for them." He leaned against me, tossing the small branch back and forth in his hand.
"Why are you here? If Wu Yuan Sect finds out that a Demonic Cultivator has infiltrated..."
"I told you I'm a dragon now; what do you mean by 'demon'?" He shot me an exasperated glance before continuing, "Can you tell me what they did to you? Even Furnace Cauldron shouldn’t have left you in such a state of Vitality depletion."
Those who have suffered under the Wu Yuan Sect have nothing left to hide. I recounted everything I had seen, from the formation to the flow of death energy and Vitality, all the way to when it was discarded at the Dan Pavilion.
Lan Xu fell silent for a moment before asking me, "Do you want revenge?"
"Yes!" Of course I wanted it.
"What if it costs you your life?"
"I just want them dead! No matter the price."
"Alright!"
The branch in Lan Xu's hand transformed into a pill, which he handed to me. "In the days to come, rest well and cultivate diligently. When they open the formation next time, take this beforehand; it might just save your life."
"What else can I do?"
"Nothing else is needed. This kind of underhanded business will be judged by the heavens."
As soon as Lan Xu left, Wu Wang appeared before me like a ghost. Without saying a word, he placed his hand on my head. My mind tingled for a moment as Wu Wang's voice echoed in my mind: "I didn't expect you to wake up. I've placed a restriction on you; if you don't want your head to explode, keep your mouth shut..." His unfinished words were laced with threat.
I suppressed my disgust and forced a weak smile. "Elder, you worry too much."
"Since you're awake, do as before. Rest well and then go cultivate. Don't think about playing both sides; if you can't handle it, your brother can take your place."
Rage burned within me, but I had to tread carefully. Even if I could buy A Qing two more years, it would be worth it.
"I wouldn't dare," I replied submissively, my voice trembling slightly. "I will certainly heed Zhen Ren's teachings, cultivate diligently, and not let out a single word."
Wu Wang seemed pleased with my compliance and nodded. "Seeing that you're so sensible, I can grant you one request. Speak up; what do you want?"
