Lin Ning, Yuan Yueming, and Cong Rong stood quietly outside the window, holding their breath, afraid even the slightest sound would alert those inside. They listened intently to the conversation within. Lin Xiu's voice rang out, filled with anger: "Yufeng, both of us come from prestigious families, our clans have always been renowned in the martial world. I truly cannot understand why you would serve Later Jin. By doing so, aren't you bringing eternal disgrace upon the Bai Family and the Lin family for selling out our country?"
White Jade Peak's tone was dismissive: "What do you know, woman? The Ming Dynasty is already like a strong bow nearing its end, its fate is nearly sealed. Meanwhile, Later Jin is strong and invincible; seizing the Great Ming's territory is only a matter of time. Besides, the Great Khan has promised our Penghe Gang that if we assist Later Jin in taking over the Great Ming, he will bestow upon us the title of the number one gang in the world! At that time, you will naturally enjoy endless wealth and glory by my side!"
Lin Xiu's tone remained resolute: "I have no interest in such so-called wealth and glory. All I desire is a simple and stable life. With all this fighting and killing, do you know how worried and fearful I am?" Her voice trembled with confusion and deep concern for her husband's actions.
Seeing Lin Xiu's tear-streaked face, White Jade Peak spoke softly: "Xiu'er, I understand your worries, but please believe me; no matter what difficulties I face, I will return safely to you." Lin Xiu sobbed and asked with a trembling voice: "But now the Great Khan is actively hunting my second Brother. If you encounter him on your journey, what will you do?"
White Jade Peak held Lin Xiu's hand tightly and replied firmly: "No matter what happens, he is still your second Brother. Out of respect for our bond, I cannot harm him easily. If I do capture him, I will plead for his mercy before the Great Khan." Hearing this, Lin Xiu felt somewhat reassured but still sighed softly: "Yufeng, can you promise me that after you finish this task for Hong Taiji, we will return to Jinling? I want to see my parents and my elder brother."
White Jade Peak quickly agreed: "Alright, I promise you. When I return, we will take our child to Jinling. Xiu'er, stop worrying so much. The sky is getting dark; let’s have dinner early and rest. Tomorrow morning, I must head to Changbai Mountain." He gently patted Lin Xiu's shoulder.
Outside the window, Lin Ning felt a surge of emotion as he listened to Lin Xiu's concern for her safety. He gestured to Yuan Yueming and Cong Rong beside him. The three of them understood each other perfectly and moved away like shadows without making a sound.
Back at the inn, Lin Ning excitedly told Yuan Yueming and Cong Rong: "Truly, heaven does not disappoint those who work hard! We have been tirelessly searching for that traitor Yang Yan along this journey and have worn out our shoes with no leads. Who would have thought today would turn out this way without any effort? Now that we know they are heading to Changbai Mountain tomorrow, we can quietly follow them. We must not let Yang Yan escape again! Once we deal with him, my niece or nephew should be born soon after. Then we can return to Shengjing to visit them!"
The next day, the three left the inn and arrived outside White Jade Peak and Lin Xiu's residence. Before long, White Jade Peak emerged from the courtyard along with Yang Yan, Dunhuang Double Slayers, Bai Songhe, and Bo Ge as they set off northward. Compared to their previous encounter at Mountain God Temple, only Bai Songpeng was missing from their ranks.
Along the way, Lin Ning and his companions disguised themselves well; they constantly changed their appearances and clothing without being detected by Yang Yan’s group. They decided to wait until they reached Changbai Mountain before confronting Yang Yan since it was far from Later Jin’s concentrated military forces. After four days of riding horses through harsh conditions, they finally arrived at Changbai Mountain.
The sight before them was a winter wonderland; snow blanketed everything like a thick white quilt stretching endlessly into the horizon. The horses neighed as they trudged through the snowflakes flying up around them. After a grueling day and night of travel through Changbai Mountain’s depths, they found themselves in an area where snow piled high above an adult's knees; moving forward became increasingly difficult for both horse and rider.
Reluctantly abandoning their mounts, they continued on foot through the vast expanse of snow. Just then, Yang Yan suddenly sensed someone was tailing them from behind. His heart raced as he turned around to see three shadowy figures lurking in the distance.
Yang Yan steadied himself and shouted back: "Who are you? Why are you sneaking around behind us?" Before he could finish his sentence, a furious voice called out: "You villain! Have you truly forgotten me? Today is your day of reckoning; let’s see where you can run!" It was Lin Ning’s furious shout.
Following that was Yuan Yueming’s voice: "Yang Yan! You traitor of Sun Moon Gang! You’ve betrayed your master and killed my parents; return their lives to me!" Upon hearing their voices, Yang Yan's face turned pale as he trembled uncontrollably with fear. He knew all too well that he had committed heinous acts against them in the past; now facing them again left him no choice but to flee deeper into the snowy mountains.
Seeing this unfold before him made Lin Ning snort coldly as he gathered his energy and leaped gracefully into action. Despite being surrounded by snowdrifts at that moment, his extraordinary agility remained unaffected as he danced lightly across the snow like a wraith while closely pursuing Yang Yan’s fleeing figure.
In just a few leaps, Lin Ning successfully blocked Yang Yan’s path! Realizing he had nowhere left to run, Yang Yan halted abruptly while gasping for breath as his chest heaved heavily. Although Changbai Mountain was frigidly cold at this time of year—its temperature plummeting—his excessive fear and frantic running had left him drenched in sweat with beads rolling down his forehead.
Lin Ning’s eyes blazed with fury as he coldly declared: "Yang Yan! Today marks your end; there’s no escape for you! The atrocities you've committed cannot be forgiven!" Yang Yan knew full well that he was no match for Lin Ning; fighting him would be akin to striking a stone with an egg. However, survival instinct kicked in; desperate for any chance at life, he suddenly reached into his clothing and pulled out a gleaming hidden weapon without hesitation—aiming it straight at Lin Ning!
But Lin Ning seemed to have anticipated this move; with a flick of his wrist, Sunlight Blade transformed into a silver flash that knocked all hidden weapons down in an instant. Though swift as lightning, this action still provided Yang Yan an opportunity; seizing it quickly turned around and sprinted away with all his might.
Having covered over twenty paces when two figures suddenly appeared ahead—Yuan Yueming and Cong Rong—positioning themselves on either side to prevent Yang Yan from escaping. Startled by this turn of events yet having nowhere left to retreat, Yang Yan swiftly darted toward Cong Rong like a ghostly figure while pressing his steel blade against her delicate neck.
In that moment of desperation for Yang Yan—a glimmer of hope appeared on his face as he laughed maniacally: "Hahaha... everyone back off! Anyone who dares take another step forward will see her blood spill right here!"
Lin Ning could hardly contain his rage as he shouted: "Yang Yan! Don’t be reckless! If you dare touch Rong'er even slightly, I swear you'll die without a burial place!" The atmosphere grew tense as both sides faced off against each other in silence; it felt as if even a falling needle could be heard amidst their standoff.
Lin Ning contemplated how to save Cong Rong while Yang Yan noticed this shift in focus too; shouting towards Dunhuang Double Slayers behind him: "The Great Khan has ordered your capture! Move quickly or let him escape!"
Chen Zhaohui scoffed derisively: "Back at Mountain God Temple when seven of us joined forces we couldn’t defeat Lin Ning; today we’re only six without our strongest leader Bai Songpeng—do you really think we can take him down?"
Yang Yan trembled slightly before gritting his teeth at Lin Ning: "Lin Ning! You better drop your weapon now or I'll kill her!" He pressed his steel blade tighter against Cong Rong's neck.
Though terrified pale-faced yet unwavering in her resolve Cong Rong said firmly: "Brother! Don’t worry about me—kill this traitor first! Avenge my parents and Leader Yuan!"
Yang Yan shouted threateningly: "Lin Ning! If you don’t surrender immediately—I’ll make my move!"
In haste Lin Ning replied: "Don’t do anything rash." He quickly tossed Sunlight Blade onto the snow-covered ground which caused some hesitation among Hao Ge and others who saw him disarmed—they edged closer towards him slowly.
Dunhuang Double Slayers brandished their iron halberds while Hao Ge wielded his steel knife alongside Bai Songhe and White Jade Peak who all aimed their weapons at Lin Ning simultaneously.
Despite being unarmed Lin Ning remained unfazed; weaving through their encirclement like an eel slipping through fingers while dodging their attacks effortlessly despite appearing perilously close to danger.
Suddenly seizing an opportunity he kicked up a cloud of snow blinding everyone momentarily—taking advantage of their obstructed vision—Lin Ning dashed toward Hao Ge snatching away his steel knife in one swift motion.
The tide turned instantly as Lin Ning brandished the knife confidently declaring: “Today none of you shall succeed!” With a loud roar he charged towards them.
The blade flashed as it clashed against golden flutes producing sparks flying everywhere while Dunhuang Double Slayers coordinated their strikes expertly—one halberd met one spear—but Lin Ning sidestepped skillfully countering with swift slashes aimed at Double Slayers.
Hao Ge along with Bai Songhe attempted to close in again but fear surged within them seeing how fierce Lin Ning had become fueled by memories of past grievances—their offensive began faltering under pressure.
Suddenly Lin Ning stumbled upon a large knife buried beneath snow—it was none other than Sunlight Blade itself! He kicked it up launching it straight towards Yang Yan hitting him squarely on his right arm causing pain that made him drop his steel knife into the snow below.
Taking advantage of this moment Cong Rong elbowed Yang Yan hard in the abdomen before swiftly escaping from his grasp while Yang Yan realized things were spiraling out of control—he fled madly down towards lower slopes of snowy mountains.
