Chapter 7
"Since they want to play, I’ll play along with them."
I spat out these words through clenched teeth, each syllable forced out as if squeezed through the gaps in my jaw, carrying a chilling intensity.
The phone rang abruptly, its sharp tone piercing through my taut nerves like a needle.
It was Gu Yan.
I took a deep breath, striving to calm the tumultuous emotions within me, and pressed the answer button.
"Qin Wan, are you okay?"
Gu Yan's voice came through the receiver, laced with a barely perceptible tremor, his concern evident in every word.
"I saw the news online."
His words were like a dull knife gently scraping across my wounds, provoking waves of hidden pain.
I closed my eyes, inhaled deeply, and then exhaled slowly, working to maintain a calm tone.
"I'm fine, Director Gu."
"These are just rumors; I will handle it."
I repeated to myself over and over to stay calm and strong, refusing to let these baseless accusations break me.
"I believe in you."
Gu Yan's tone was firm and reassuring, like a warm current flowing into my cold heart.
At least there was someone who believed in me.
Those simple four words gave me immense strength.
After hanging up the phone, I felt a wave of warmth and a sense of solace.
In this moment, akin to falling into an ice cellar, this warmth felt incredibly precious.
I squeezed my eyes shut, allowing exhaustion and grievance to wash over me.
But I couldn't give in.
I still had many things to accomplish.
I suddenly opened my eyes, determination shining brightly within them.
I would fight back!
I opened my laptop and began organizing my schedule and work records from this period.
I would use facts to prove that the so-called "evidence" was nothing but maliciously fabricated lies.
The sound of my fingers striking the keyboard was crisp and powerful, as if releasing the anger and frustration within me.
I would make them understand that I was not a lamb to be slaughtered.
"I can't be defeated like this."
I silently vowed to myself.
"I will let my strength speak for itself."
Early the next morning, I arrived at the agency.
"Xiao Wang, please schedule a meeting with the director of 'Long Night.'"
I said to my agent, my tone calm yet resolute.
"I want to audition in person."
Xiao Wang looked at me in surprise, his eyes filled with concern and confusion.
"But Sister Wan, given the current situation..."
Before he could finish his sentence, I interrupted him.
"Given the current situation, we need to take the initiative."
I looked directly into his eyes, my tone leaving no room for doubt.
"I will prove myself with my strength."
Xiao Wang hesitated for a moment but eventually nodded.
I knew he was worried about me.
But I had no way back now.
In the following days, I threw myself wholeheartedly into preparing for the role.
I studied the script, delved into the character, and even sought advice from several acting teachers.
I locked myself in my room, practicing lines over and over again, exploring the character's inner world.
I was determined to bring this role to life and conquer everyone with my performance.
Gu Yan's call came again, his voice filled with concern.
"Qin Wan, are you sure you want to do this?"
"The public opinion is very unfavorable for you right now."
"I know."
I took a deep breath, trying to suppress my inner anxiety.
"But I can't be defeated like this."
"I will prove myself with my strength."
"Alright, I support you."
Gu Yan's voice gave me immense encouragement.
I knew that no matter what happened, he would stand by my side.
Finally, the day of the audition arrived.
I stood outside the audition room, taking a deep breath to calm my nerves.
I knew this might be my last chance.
"Qin Wan."
The director called my name.
"Are you ready?"
I nodded and pushed open the door to the audition room, stepping inside.
"Let's begin."
The director's voice was calm and indifferent.
I closed my eyes, allowing myself to fully immerse in the character.
When I opened my eyes again, I was no longer Qin Wan but the strong and complex female lead from the script.
I started my performance, pouring all my emotions into it.
I felt the atmosphere in the room slowly shift, all eyes focused on me.
As I delivered my final line, silence enveloped the room.
My heart raced in my throat as I anxiously awaited the director's feedback.
"Excellent!"
The director finally spoke, excitement gleaming in his eyes.
"Qin Wan, your performance has shown me the soul of this character."
I let out a sigh of relief, a wave of joy washing over me.
My efforts were not in vain.
"Thank you, Director."
I said with a smile.
"I really like this character and hope to have the opportunity to play it."
"No need to thank me."
The director replied with a smile.
"Your performance was outstanding."
"We will get back to you as soon as possible."
As I walked out of the audition room, I felt a sense of relief.
In this audition, I had given it my all, hoping to break through the impact of those malicious rumors.
I knew the road ahead was still long, but I would not give up.
I would continue to work hard and prove myself with my talent.
