A tremor shook the ground violently, jolting Lin Yuan awake from his slumber. "What the hell! An earthquake?!" He sat up abruptly, nearly sending his old phone flying.
The fluorescent light above swayed like a drunken man, buzzing with electrical sounds, while the alarm blared sharply, piercing through the air as if it could shatter eardrums. The entire base trembled, resembling an elderly man with Parkinson's, on the verge of collapsing. Cracks began to appear on the walls, spreading rapidly like spider webs, sending chills down his spine.
"This is bad! The base is going to collapse!" Su Jiu'er’s voice came from outside the door, urgent and tinged with a barely noticeable tremor.
Lin Yuan sprang out of bed like a fish leaping from water, grabbing his Time Manipulator and rushing out. This gadget was his treasure; it could save lives in critical moments!
As he burst through the door, he saw Su Jiu'er running toward him with Zhou Haoran and two other team members, their expressions frantic. Zhou Haoran's hair was a mess, looking as if a cat had clawed at it, and he still bore traces of sleep on his face—clearly startled awake by the sudden chaos. One of the other team members was tall and serious-looking, while the other was smaller and wore glasses that reflected the flashing alarm lights.
"Quick! The core device in the passage has been damaged, triggering a chain reaction! This damn base won't hold for long!" Su Jiu'er shouted as she ran, her voice laced with urgency and helplessness.
Without hesitation, Lin Yuan activated his Time Manipulator. Instantly, time around them slowed down; everyone else's movements followed suit, resembling a comical slow-motion replay from a movie. Zhou Haoran rubbed his eyes in confusion, staring at everything moving sluggishly around him as if he were still dreaming.
"Hey, this makes things easier! If we’re making a run for it, just follow my lead!" Lin Yuan grinned triumphantly and led the group through the slow-motion chaos, feeling like they were in a real-life version of "bullet time."
Inside the base was already in disarray—debris littered everywhere and twisted metal lay scattered about. Pipes from the ceiling had burst open, spewing white steam like scenes from an apocalyptic film. The air was thick with dust and a strange burnt smell that made one cough uncontrollably.
"This special effect is worth every penny! Just missing popcorn and soda!" Lin Yuan joked despite the dire situation, skillfully guiding everyone to dodge falling rocks and collapsing walls with agility akin to that of a nimble monkey.
Suddenly, a wall of Light Net appeared ahead—dense red beams intertwined to form a deadly barrier, resembling a gaping maw ready to devour anything that dared approach.
"What the hell! How do we dodge that?! This is too intense!" Lin Yuan exclaimed, quickly halting just before crashing into Su Jiu'er.
Su Jiu'er’s expression turned grave. "This is the base's defense system; it has activated self-destruct protocols. It seems that Nan Gong Xuan is dead set on burying us all here!"
"Self-destruct sequence? Is she trying to take us all down with her? This woman is ruthless!" Lin Yuan gritted his teeth, cursing Nan Gong Xuan in his heart as a complete madwoman.
"Stop talking nonsense and think of a way out! We don't want to end up as barbecue skewers!" Zhou Haoran urged anxiously, beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
Lin Yuan's eyes darted around, formulating a plan. "Jiu'er, you're familiar with the terrain; lead us around! I'll cover you with the Time Manipulator!"
"Got it!" Su Jiu'er decisively took charge, guiding everyone in another direction. She knew the layout of the base like the back of her hand and quickly found a relatively safe route.
Meanwhile, Lin Yuan continued to use the Time Manipulator to slow down time, buying more escape time for everyone while also dodging falling rocks and the intense Light Net. He was multitasking like a spinning top.
Just then, a massive concrete slab came crashing down from above, heading straight for Zhou Haoran! The slab was as large as a small car, and if it hit him, Zhou Haoran would surely be turned into a meat patty!
"Hao Ran! Watch out! Above you!" Lin Yuan shouted, his voice cracking under pressure.
In a split second, Lin Yuan activated Time Reversal, rewinding time back a few seconds. The surrounding scene rapidly reversed like a film played in reverse; debris flew back to the ceiling, broken pipes reconnected, and even the dust in the air vanished.
"Hao Ran, get out of the way! A big one is about to fall!" Lin Yuan shouted again, this time his voice more urgent and filled with tension.
With the warning, Zhou Haoran managed to dodge the falling rock just in time but was still grazed by flying debris on his arm, blood instantly staining his sleeve.
"It's nothing, just a scratch! I'm not going to die!" Zhou Haoran said through gritted teeth, trying to sound tough despite the pain.
"What are you doing acting tough at a time like this? Hurry up and bandage it!" Lin Yuan snapped back while secretly thanking his lucky stars for having Time Reversal as his Golden Finger; otherwise, Zhou Haoran would have really been done for this time.
At that moment, a figure suddenly appeared before everyone—Nan Gong Xuan! Dressed in a tight black outfit, she wore a cold smirk on her face, her eyes icy like a venomous snake.
"Thinking of escaping? Not so easy! Hand over the Time Manipulator!" Nan Gong Xuan sneered, gathering a powerful surge of Lingqi in her hands. The Lingqi swirled around, emitting dazzling light as it surged toward Lin Yuan and the others.
Lin Yuan quickly activated the Time Manipulator, pausing time. Nan Gong Xuan's movements froze instantly, like a statue.
"You think such petty tricks can stop me? How naive!" Nan Gong Xuan scoffed. Though her body was immobilized, her mouth could still move, filled with mockery.
"Of course, it's not just this little trick! I have something even more powerful!" Lin Yuan chuckled and activated the Material Decomposition function, breaking down the ground beneath Nan Gong Xuan's feet into nothingness.
Caught off guard, she fell into the abyss with a startled scream before vanishing from sight.
"Ah!"
"Is that it? Was it that easy?" Zhou Haoran asked in surprise, feeling a bit unreal.
Lin Yuan shrugged. "I don't know; for now, we're not in danger. Let's get out of here first!"
The group continued their escape under Su Jiu'er’s guidance, navigating through narrow passages and dodging falling rocks until they finally emerged just before the base collapsed completely.
Looking back at the ruins of the Experimental Base, Lin Yuan couldn't help but exclaim, "What an exhilarating escape experience! Way more thrilling than a roller coaster at an amusement park!"
