Lin Yu rubbed his aching temples, the blue light from the computer screen glaring in the dim office. It was nearly eleven o'clock at night, and the entire building was dark except for his floor.
"Lin Yu, still not off work? We're the only two left in the whole building. Let's go together!"
Lin Yu turned to see his colleague, Xiao Wang, standing at the door. Both were key players in the company and workaholics. Since their roles didn't conflict, they got along quite well.
Xiao Wang was a warm-hearted person; just last week, he had tried to set Lin Yu up on a date. However, upon hearing that the girl worked at an archaeological research institute, Lin Yu politely declined, citing his busy schedule.
A girl studying ancient relics—would she even have any feminine charm? She probably had a stiff demeanor and a rigid mindset!
"Brother Wang, you go ahead! I just need to finish organizing this last set of data." Although they were about the same age, Lin Yu had joined the company a few months later, so he had to call him "Brother."
"Alright then, I'll head out. Don't stay too long; you might miss the last subway."
Lin Yu nodded. "Okay." Xiao Wang turned and left.
Sighing, Lin Yu returned to his work. By eleven o'clock, he finally finished, saved the last report, and shut down his computer. He had intended to sort out his plans for tomorrow but realized he was out of time. If he didn't leave soon, he would miss the last train.
As he packed up his things, his gaze inadvertently fell on a family photo on his desk. In it, his parents wore warm and kind smiles from last year's Spring Festival. Lin Yu's fingers gently brushed over the frame as a smile crept onto his lips. Once this project was over, he would definitely take a long vacation to visit home. But returning single would surely invite his parents' endless nagging.
Stepping out of the office building, the early autumn night breeze carried a slight chill. Lin Yu tightened his thin jacket and hurried toward the subway station. The neon lights lining the streets flickered in the night, casting a long shadow behind him.
Turning a corner, he suddenly noticed an eerie blue light emanating from a narrow alley ahead. The glow flickered in and out like it was seeping from another world. Lin Yu hesitated for a moment; reason told him to take another route, but for some reason, that light seemed to have an inexplicable allure that compelled him to step forward.
The alley was narrow with towering brick walls on either side. The blue light grew brighter as Lin Yu felt the air around him becoming thick and hard to breathe. His temples throbbed painfully as a faint buzzing filled his ears. Just then, he felt a sudden heat on the inside of his wrist as if something was branding him there.
"What is this..." Lin Yu looked down to see a strange symbol emerging on his wrist, glowing faintly with golden light. Before he could process it further, the blue light surged forward and engulfed him completely.
Weightlessness!
That was Lin Yu's first sensation. He felt as if he were falling yet floating simultaneously amidst an expanse of void-like darkness. An eerie wind howled around him as if countless voices whispered secrets in unison. His consciousness began to blur as fragmented images flashed before his eyes: twisted trees, a purple sky, floating islands...
He lost track of time until he landed heavily on the ground. Struggling to get up, he found himself in an entirely unfamiliar world.
The sky was an unnatural shade of purplish-red without a sun yet glaringly bright. An indescribable scent filled the air—like a mix of rust and floral fragrance. Towering trees surrounded him with trunks of unnatural dark green hue and leaves that glimmered faintly with bioluminescence.
His wrist still burned with heat as that mysterious symbol flickered in and out of view. Taking a deep breath, he tried to calm himself down. As an ordinary office worker, he had never imagined experiencing something so bizarre. But now was not the time to panic; he needed to figure out where he was and how to return.
At that moment, he heard rustling noises behind him. Lin Yu spun around abruptly to see bushes nearby shaking violently. His heart raced as cold sweat formed in his palms. The sound grew closer until suddenly—a thick vine shot out from the bushes like a snake and lunged at him!
Instinctively, Lin Yu rolled aside to evade the attack. The vine grazed his shoulder with a sharp pain that flared up instantly. Ignoring his injury, he scrambled to his feet and ran for it. More vines whipped through the air behind him; he dared not look back but pushed himself forward desperately.
However, it felt as if this forest had come alive—the trees twisted unnaturally while branches reached out like tentacles trying to grab him. A root suddenly tripped Lin Yu's left leg, sending him crashing hard onto the ground. He struggled to rise but found that vines had ensnared his ankle tightly.
"No!" Lin Yu exclaimed in terror as more and more vines surged toward him. Just then, the symbol on his wrist suddenly erupted with a dazzling golden light. A warm current spread from his wrist throughout his body, and he felt an unprecedented surge of power within him.
Instinctively, Lin Yu raised his hand, and a beam of golden light shot from his palm, severing the vines that had ensnared his ankles. He stared at his hand in astonishment, but before he could ponder it further, more vines were already closing in. This time, he did not flee; instead, he closed his eyes and focused on the strange energy coursing through him.
As the vines were about to touch him, Lin Yu suddenly opened his eyes and thrust both hands forward. A Golden Energy Wave radiated outward from him, and wherever it passed, the vines snapped apart, and the twisted trees returned to their original forms.
Breathing heavily, Lin Yu couldn't believe what he had just done. He looked down at his hand; the mysterious symbol was slowly fading. At that moment, he heard applause behind him.
"Not bad, to awaken the power of the mark so soon after arriving here," said an elderly yet strong voice.
Lin Yu turned cautiously to see an old man with white hair standing not far away. The Old Man wore a tattered Gray Robe and leaned on a Wooden Staff, a kind smile on his face. But what stood out most were his eyes—deep and penetrating, as if they could see into one's soul, glimmering with an unusual light.
"Who are you?" Lin Yu instinctively took a step back.
The Old Man smiled gently. "You can call me Old Mo. I know you have many questions right now, child. This is the Phantom Realm, a space parallel to the real world. And you," he pointed at Lin Yu's wrist, "are the chosen one."
Lin Yu looked down at the faintly glowing symbol on his wrist and then back up at Old Mo. "Chosen? What does that mean? Why am I here?"
