Alice felt as if her lungs were on fire as she ran desperately, the heavy footsteps and labored breathing of the monster behind her growing ever closer. Suddenly, a creature lunged at her, causing Alice to fall to the ground, her candlestick flying from her grasp. In despair, she closed her eyes, bracing for the fate of being torn apart by the monster.
However, the anticipated pain never came. Slowly, Alice opened her eyes to see a fae man standing before her, his sword emitting a soft glow that formed a barrier against the monster's attack.
"Who are you?" Alice asked, trembling.
"My name is Cassius. There's no time for explanations; we need to get out of here," Cassius replied as he fended off the creature's strikes and pulled Alice to her feet, racing toward the woods outside the town.
The monsters pursued relentlessly as Cassius led Alice through the trees, twisting and turning in an attempt to shake them off. Branches tore at Alice's clothing, leaving small cuts on her face, but she paid no mind, keeping close behind Cassius.
Finally, they reached a clearing in the forest where Cassius halted. He turned to shield Alice with his body and drew an arrow from his quiver, nocking it on his bow. The monsters had caught up, surrounding them completely.
"Alice, stay behind me and don’t move," Cassius instructed in a low voice.
"How do you know my name?" Alice asked in surprise.
"There’s no time to explain; focus," Cassius replied before beginning to chant a spell. The bow and arrow in his hands began to radiate intense light, and the surrounding trees seemed to respond to this power, their leaves rustling in anticipation.
As Cassius finished his incantation, he released the bowstring. The arrow shot forth like a meteor toward the horde of monsters. In midair, it split into countless smaller arrows that rained down upon them. The creatures shrieked in agony as many fell dead on the spot. Yet there were still too many remaining, charging toward them.
Cassius gripped his sword tightly, preparing for close combat. Alice watched in confusion and fear as everything unfolded before her. At that moment, strange symbols flickered in her mind once again, more intensely than before. She felt an overwhelming surge of power within her body, as if it were about to burst forth.
Uncontrollably, Alice raised her hands and began murmuring the symbols. Suddenly, a brilliant starlight erupted from her being like a miniature sun, enveloping the surrounding monsters. Under its glow, they recoiled as if burned by fire, retreating until they dissipated into wisps of black smoke.
Cassius stared at Alice in astonishment, his eyes filled with delight and pride.
"You’ve finally begun to awaken your powers, Alice—the strength of a Starborn," he said.
Alice looked bewilderedly at her hands and then back at Cassius. "Starborn? What does that mean? What’s happening to me?" Her voice trembled; everything that had transpired that night was beyond her comprehension.
Cassius took a deep breath and began to reveal the hidden secrets of this world—about the Starborn, about the rise of dark forces, and about the mission that lay upon Alice’s shoulders…
As Alice listened to Cassius's account, her eyes were filled with shock and confusion. She had never imagined that this ordinary girl from a small town would be linked to such a grand mission of saving the world.
