When the first snow fell upon the city, no one realized it would mark the beginning of the end of the world. The snowflakes danced like feathers, yet carried an ominous chill. They blanketed skyscrapers, covered the streets, and concealed the fears of the people. The temperature plummeted overnight, as if the entire world had been pressed on pause.
Li Chen stood by the window, gazing at the white world outside, but his heart was filled with cold dread. He was an ordinary warehouse manager, leading a mundane life until three days ago when he saw the news—global climate anomalies were causing a sharp drop in temperatures.
"This is just an ordinary cold wave," he had thought at the time, but soon he realized he was mistaken.
Three days later, everything changed. The power grid collapsed, transportation fell into chaos, and supermarket shelves were stripped bare. People shouted in the streets but found no warmth. As Li Chen watched the turmoil outside, a strange calm washed over him. He knew that his stockpiled supplies would be key to survival.
He had hoarded a year's worth of food, water, and fuel, along with enough weapons to protect himself. This was his final preparation before the apocalypse arrived and his only hope.
"Li Chen, have you gone mad?" his friends had once mocked him. But now, those taunts had long since vanished into the wind and snow.
He opened the door to the warehouse; outside lay a world shrouded in silence. The streets were deserted, only thick layers of snow danced in the wind. Li Chen took a deep breath; the icy air stung his lungs. He knew that from this moment on, he would face this new world alone.
He grabbed his backpack filled with essentials and a handgun. He didn't know what awaited him outside, but he understood that he had to survive.
"Maybe I can find other survivors," he murmured to himself, his voice barely audible against the howling snow.
He took his first step into this snow-covered world. His footprints sank deep into the snow, as if declaring that he would carve out his own path in this apocalypse.
Li Chen trudged through the snow with great difficulty; each step felt like a struggle against fate. He lost track of time, only aware that cold and hunger were slowly eroding his willpower.
"Hang in there," he told himself. "You can't fall here."
Just when he was about to give up, he spotted lights ahead. It was an abandoned building with faint illumination seeping through its windows. Li Chen's heart raced; he knew there might be someone inside.
He approached cautiously and found that the door was slightly ajar. Pushing it open, a wave of warm air greeted him. Inside, he saw a young girl sitting in a corner, holding a candle.
"Who are you?" she looked up at him with fear in her eyes.
"I'm Li Chen," he replied softly. "I'm also a survivor."
A flicker of hesitation crossed her face before she nodded slowly. Li Chen understood that from this moment on, they would face this Ice Age Apocalypse together.
As Li Chen stepped further inside, an old musty scent filled his nostrils. It was clear that this place had been abandoned for quite some time, yet the faint candlelight felt surprisingly warm. He approached the young girl carefully, trying to ease her tension with a gentle tone.
"Don't be afraid; I'm not a bad person." He crouched down to meet her gaze at eye level. "My name is Li Chen; I'm a survivor just like you."
The girl clutched her candle tightly as its light flickered across her face, revealing her frightened yet wary expression. She appeared to be around seventeen or eighteen years old, dressed in a tattered cotton coat with messy hair; yet there was a stubborn glint in her eyes.
"What are you doing here?" Her voice was soft and trembled slightly.
"I've been looking for a long time outside, hoping to find a place to escape the cold." Li Chen glanced around and discovered that this was an abandoned library. The bookshelves were toppled, and tables and chairs were scattered about, but the thick carpet surprisingly remained intact, adding a touch of warmth to the cold space. "It seems relatively safe here; at least it can block the wind."
The girl fell silent for a moment, seemingly contemplating whether to trust him. Finally, she loosened her grip on the candle and said softly, "My name is Lin Yao. I've been hiding here for two days."
"Two days?" Li Chen frowned. "It's too dangerous outside. How have you managed alone?"
Lin Yao looked up, a flicker of defiance in her eyes. "I have my ways."
Li Chen didn't press further; he understood that in this apocalypse, everyone had their own survival strategies. He pulled some rations and a bottle of water from his backpack and handed them to Lin Yao. "You must be hungry. Here, have something to eat."
Lin Yao accepted the food, gratitude flashing in her eyes. She tore open the packaging and began to eat ravenously. Li Chen sat nearby, watching her with a mix of admiration and reflection. This girl was so young yet managed to survive alone in this harsh world; her strength impressed him.
"Where are you from?" Lin Yao asked after finishing her meal and wiping her mouth.
"I was working in a warehouse," Li Chen replied. "Before the apocalypse hit, I stocked up on supplies. I was looking for a safe place when I unexpectedly ran into you."
Lin Yao nodded, seemingly satisfied with his answer. She surveyed their surroundings and sighed. "While this place can block the wind, we don't have enough supplies; we can't stay here long."
Li Chen nodded in agreement; he knew she was right. Although this library was temporarily safe, without sufficient food, water, and warmth, they would eventually run out of options.
"I have some supplies too, but not enough for long-term survival," Li Chen said as he pulled out a small notebook listing his stockpiled items. "I have some canned food, rations, and fuel, but these will last us at most a month."
Lin Yao took the notebook and examined it closely before looking up with determination in her eyes. "We need to find a safer place—one where we can survive long-term."
Li Chen fell silent for a moment; he knew Lin Yao was right. They needed a shelter that could help them endure the Ice Age Apocalypse. He recalled his plan before the world changed—searching for a forgotten underground refuge.
"I've heard of a place," Li Chen said slowly. "A forgotten underground shelter that has enough supplies and energy to sustain us for a long time."
Lin Yao's eyes lit up. "Do you know where it is?"
Li Chen nodded. "I know roughly where it is, but the journey will be dangerous. The world outside has changed; it's filled with threats."
Lin Yao stood up and brushed off the dust from her clothes. "I'm not afraid of danger; as long as we can find a safe place, I'm willing to take that risk."
Looking into her determined gaze, Li Chen felt an unexplainable trust swell within him. He knew this girl would become his most important companion in this new world.
"Alright," he said as he stood up and slung his backpack over his shoulder. "We'll set out tomorrow."
