After a night of rushing, a glimmer of dawn finally appeared on the horizon. Li Chen and Lin Yao brought Zhao Ming to the city center's Old Industrial Area. It was desolate, with abandoned factories and warehouses looking particularly forlorn in the snow and wind.
"This is the place," Li Chen said, pointing to an entrance of a derelict subway station ahead. "The shelter is down there."
Lin Yao let out a sigh of relief; she knew that once they entered the shelter, they would be temporarily safe. Supporting Zhao Ming, she stepped toward the subway station entrance.
"Wait." Li Chen suddenly stopped, a hint of caution in his eyes.
"What’s wrong?" Lin Yao asked.
"I feel something is off here." Li Chen scanned the surroundings and noticed some strange marks around the subway entrance, as if someone had deliberately cleaned the area.
"Could it be a trap?" Lin Yao's voice carried a note of concern.
"We need to be careful." Li Chen pulled out his handgun from his backpack, signaling for Lin Yao and Zhao Ming to stay behind him.
They cautiously entered the subway station, descending the dimly lit stairs. As their footsteps echoed in the empty tunnel, an unsettling atmosphere began to envelop them.
"It's so quiet here," Lin Yao whispered, her voice sounding particularly hollow in the tunnel.
"Too quiet," Li Chen nodded, gripping his handgun tightly as he vigilantly watched their surroundings.
They arrived at a fork in the tunnel, with two paths leading in different directions. Li Chen halted, trying to recall what he had heard about the shelter's location.
"I remember that the shelter should be at the end of the left tunnel," Li Chen said softly.
"The left?" Lin Yao nodded but her gaze lingered on the right tunnel. There seemed to be a faint flicker of light coming from that direction.
"There seems to be light over there," Lin Yao pointed toward the right tunnel.
Li Chen frowned; he knew that the shelter was supposed to be on the left, but the light on the right made him uneasy.
"Let’s check the left first," Li Chen said. "If it doesn’t feel right, we’ll turn back."
They proceeded down the left tunnel, going deeper and deeper. A damp smell filled the air, with occasional drops of water falling from the walls. Li Chen's heartbeat quickened; he didn’t know what awaited them.
"It seems like no one is here," Lin Yao said quietly, disappointment creeping into her voice.
Li Chen didn’t respond; he continued forward until they reached a massive iron door. A rusty lock hung on it, looking like it hadn’t been opened in ages.
"Is this the entrance to the shelter?" Lin Yao asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Li Chen nodded and stepped forward, attempting to open the lock. But it was rusted shut and wouldn’t budge at all.
"It seems this place has been abandoned for a long time," Li Chen sighed, a wave of unease washing over him.
"What should we do now?" Lin Yao asked, her gaze shifting to the tunnel on the right.
"Let's go check that way," Li Chen nodded, aware that he had no other choice.
They turned and walked towards the right tunnel. As their footsteps echoed closer, a faint light gradually became clearer. Li Chen's heart raced; he had no idea what awaited them.
"It seems like there are people ahead," Lin Yao whispered, a hint of tension in her voice.
Li Chen nodded and raised his handgun, signaling for Lin Yao and Zhao Ming to stay behind him. They cautiously moved forward until they reached an open space.
The sight before them left them stunned—this was not the refuge they had imagined, but a vast underground camp. Tents, campfires, and crowds… it was clear that people lived here.
"Who are you?" a voice suddenly rang out, causing Li Chen and Lin Yao to halt immediately.
A middle-aged man stepped out from the crowd, his eyes filled with suspicion. He wore a heavy leather jacket and held a shotgun, looking very much like the leader of this place.
"We're survivors," Li Chen raised his hands to show he meant no harm. "We're looking for shelter."
The man scrutinized them for a moment before nodding. "Come in; it's too cold outside."
Li Chen and Lin Yao exchanged glances before leading Zhao Ming into the camp. They were uncertain how these people would treat them, but they knew this was their only hope.
