The people in the camp did not appear wealthy, but at least they had food, fire, and hope. Li Chen and Lin Yao were assigned to a tent, while Zhao Ming was placed in the medical tent for treatment.
"Where are you from?" a middle-aged man sitting by the campfire asked, his gaze intense as he looked at Li Chen and Lin Yao.
"We came from the city center," Li Chen replied. "We were looking for a shelter, but found it abandoned."
The man nodded. "You're lucky to have found this place."
"Is this a shelter?" Lin Yao asked, her voice tinged with hope.
The man chuckled softly. "It's not exactly a shelter, but we've survived here for a long time. We have our own rules and way of life."
"Can we stay?" Li Chen asked, his eyes resolute.
The man was silent for a moment before nodding. "Yes, but you must follow our rules."
Li Chen and Lin Yao exchanged glances, knowing this was their new beginning. Although it wasn't the shelter they had imagined, at least they had found a temporary home.
"Thank you," Li Chen said, filled with gratitude.
"No need to thank me," the man said as he stood up and patted Li Chen on the shoulder. "Here, we are all survivors; we must live together."
Li Chen and Lin Yao were assigned to a small tent on the edge of the camp. The living conditions were simple, but there was warmth from the campfire and enough food. Most of the residents were survivors like them, each carrying their own story.
"Life here isn't easy," the middle-aged man—who was the camp leader named Chen Gang—found Li Chen the next morning and said, "But as long as you follow the rules, you can survive."
Li Chen nodded; he understood Chen Gang's words. The rules were the foundation of survival in the camp, and they needed to adapt quickly.
"We'll help out," Li Chen said. "We're not here to take advantage."
Chen Gang smiled and patted Li Chen on the shoulder. "I know, young man. The camp needs people like you."
To integrate into the camp, Li Chen and Lin Yao began to take on tasks voluntarily. They helped set up tents, gather food, care for injured survivors, and even cleared snow around the camp. Their efforts gradually earned them recognition from others.
"You don't look like ordinary survivors," a young man named Xiao Jie said to Li Chen during one of their tasks. Xiao Jie was an elder in the camp and knew its operations well.
"We just want to survive," Lin Yao replied firmly.
Xiao Jie nodded. "Surviving here isn't easy. You need to be careful; some people in the camp aren't as friendly as they seem."
Li Chen and Lin Yao exchanged glances; they knew that integrating into the camp was just the first step. Next, they needed to build real trust.
Li Chen remained preoccupied with thoughts of the abandoned shelter. He suspected it might hold some secrets related to the establishment of this camp. Thus, he began searching for clues within the camp.
One night, under cover of darkness, Li Chen quietly made his way to the camp's warehouse. The warehouse was filled with various supplies, but his attention was drawn to a stack of documents in a corner. He sifted through them and discovered some records about the shelter.
"I see..." Li Chen murmured, a hint of surprise flashing in his eyes. The document mentioned that the camp's founders had attempted to explore the shelter but ultimately abandoned the effort for some reason. It also indicated that there might be some hidden dangers within the shelter.
"We need to uncover the truth," Li Chen said after returning to the tent, addressing Lin Yao.
Lin Yao nodded. "But we have to be careful; we can't let anyone in the camp know."
