The mysterious figure was known as Shadow, an operative planted by a secret organization within Eastern Wu. He was slender, draped in a black robe, with his face covered by a dark cloth that revealed only a pair of piercing eyes. Shadow gathered with the resisting Gentry in a secluded courtyard, where the flickering candlelight cast their shadows long and short.
"Listen up, all of you. The reforms that Mu Yunfan and his group are pushing through have disrupted important matters above. The higher-ups have instructed us to find a way to sabotage this," Shadow said in a low, gravelly voice.
A rotund Gentry member, his face adorned with a sycophantic smile, replied eagerly, "Lord Shadow, rest assured, we have been spreading rumors, but the villagers remain somewhat uncertain."
Shadow snorted coldly, a glint of malice flashing in his eyes. "Is that all you can do? Tomorrow, when they begin to remeasure the land, you will incite the villagers to protest, claiming their land has been usurped. If you can manage to injure Mu Yunfan and his group in the process, there will be generous rewards from above."
The Gentry nodded in agreement, greed evident in their eyes.
The next day, Fu Xingchen and Su Yizhi were preparing to start measuring the land. Villagers gathered around them; some wore expressions of anticipation while others harbored doubts.
Mu Yunfan stood at the edge of the field and proclaimed loudly, "Fellow Villagers, today we will begin to remeasure the land. It will be allocated fairly based on population to ensure equity."
At that moment, several resisting Gentry members charged forward with a group of villagers. The leading Gentry member shouted at the top of his lungs, "Don't believe their lies! They just want to seize our land! Soon we'll be left with nothing!"
The villagers began to stir restlessly as the situation escalated. Fu Xingchen frowned and stepped forward. "Everyone, do not believe these rumors. We are here for your benefit; how could we possibly seize your land?"
Shadow blended into the crowd, secretly observing the unfolding chaos. He felt a sense of satisfaction as he watched Fu Xingchen and his companions struggle and prepared to seize an opportunity to deliver a fatal blow to Mu Yunfan.
Su Yizhi looked at the agitated crowd and shouted, "Everyone calm down! Let us explain! If we truly had any ill intentions, may heaven strike us down!" But the stirred villagers were deaf to reason; some even picked up stones, ready to act violently.
Mu Yunfan felt anxious; he knew that acting impulsively would only worsen the situation. He called out loudly, "Fellow Villagers! We have always helped those who suffer; you can ask around. This reform is meant for everyone’s better future!"
As both sides remained locked in a stalemate, a shadowy figure quietly drew a dagger and, taking advantage of the chaos, lunged at Mu Yunfan's back. Fu Xingchen, with keen eyes, caught a glint of cold steel and felt a surge of alarm. Without a moment's hesitation, he dashed forward and blocked the deadly strike with his arm. The dagger plunged into Fu Xingchen's arm, and blood gushed forth instantly.
"Brother Fu!" The crowd gasped in shock. Su Yizhi quickly turned around, his gaze fierce as he spotted the shadow. "You scoundrel!" With that, he drew his sword and charged at the figure. Realizing they were outnumbered, the shadow turned to flee.
Zhao Gang swung his iron rod and shouted, "Trying to escape? Not on my watch!" He lifted his leg to pursue. Fu Xingchen gritted his teeth against the pain and said, "Brother Zhao, don’t chase after him. We need to stabilize the villagers first."
Seeing Fu Xingchen injured while protecting Mu Yunfan filled the villagers with guilt. An elderly man with white hair stepped forward and said, "Everyone, please calm down. These young masters have been repairing our homes and improving our lives over the past few days. Just now, Young Master Fu was injured for Young Master Mu. We must not let the villains take advantage of us."
With the elder's persuasion, the villagers gradually quieted down. Mu Yunfan looked at the wounded Fu Xingchen, filled with gratitude. "Brother Fu, why did you go to such lengths? What if you had been seriously hurt?"
Fu Xingchen smiled and shook his head. "What are you saying, brother Mu? We are brothers; we naturally look out for each other. This little injury is nothing."
Lin Yu hurried over to help bandage Fu Xingchen's wound. Once it was wrapped up, Mu Yunfan addressed the villagers again. "Fellow Villagers, our determination for reform remains unchanged. As you have seen just now, some people do not want us to live well and deliberately cause trouble. But as long as you trust us and work together, our future will surely improve."
The villagers nodded in agreement, expressing their willingness to believe in them.
