"This is ridiculous," Lu Youyou thought, feeling the weight of the situation. The Special Investigation Team had already brought someone back; how could they claim ignorance?
She dared not meet Mo Mei Lin's gaze and instead focused on her hands clasped around the teacup. "I... I know him from Gene Building."
Mo Mei Lin tried to soften her tone, hoping to ease Lu Youyou's anxiety. "Relax, just relax. We only want to understand how you know him. Can you elaborate on that?"
Behind the cameras and recording devices sat Zhang Yutao, the Special Investigation Team Leader, along with a psychologist observing the proceedings. They were intent on constructing a psychological profile of Xu Lie based on Lu Youyou's account, which is why Mo Mei Lin was asking such detailed questions.
As Lu Youyou pondered their relationship, she spoke candidly, recounting her experience. The psychologist was busy modeling while Zhang Yutao and Mo Mei Lin listened with keen interest. If it weren't for the questioning, Mo Mei Lin might have been tempted to snack on some sunflower seeds while listening.
What a story it was—going to Gene Building and unexpectedly becoming close to a classmate of her crush. It sounded like something out of a television drama.
"Xu Lie twisted his ankle while helping me escape from the fire," she explained. "I wanted to thank him, so I treated him to a meal, but that's all there is to it."
When she mentioned his twisted ankle, Mo Mei Lin caught the pause in her voice. Regardless of whether it was true or not, she decided to probe further.
The experienced Mo Mei Lin quickly seized the opportunity to break through Lu Youyou's defenses. "But according to our information, Xu Lie did not twist his ankle."
"Lu Youyou," she continued, "please don’t lie. We have gathered substantial intelligence before coming to speak with you. If you don’t believe me, I can show you the surveillance footage from that day when Xu Lie walked home normally after the explosion at Gene Building."
Lu Youyou had never faced such an interrogation before; panic set in as her hands tightened around the teacup, seeking warmth from the tea to soothe her cold palms.
"I... I don’t know," she stammered.
A normal person who truly didn’t know would deny it smoothly, but Lu Youyou’s fragmented denials practically screamed that she was aware but unwilling to admit it.
None of the Special Investigation Team members—Mo Mei Lin, Zhang Yutao, or the psychologist—were fooled.
Unaware that she had been seen through, Lu Youyou recalled her lie about Xu Lie's injury and borrowed a line: "I only heard him mention twisting his ankle during our phone conversation. I really don’t know if he actually did or not. Even if you say there’s surveillance footage, isn’t it possible for him to endure the pain? Boys wouldn’t want to show a humiliating side of themselves."
Zhang Yutao behind the camera couldn’t help but sigh at her words: "Such deep feelings for each other; students really are in a beautiful age."
The psychologist rolled his eyes discreetly, annoyed that their leader's comments were disrupting his profiling thoughts but refrained from saying anything since he was in charge.
Even though Mo Mei Lin knew that Lu Youyou was lying, she couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for Lu Youyou, who was doing her best to protect Xu Lie. The audience was even more direct, showering Lu Youyou with praise through a flurry of comments.
"I'm so moved! Lu Youyou's performance here is truly the highlight of the show. Even in such a tense situation, she still tries to shield Xu Lie."
"Xu Lie! How could you leave her all alone to bear this burden?!"
"Kill Xu Gou and save Youyou!"
"If it comes down to it, just confess! Let's put all the blame on Xu Lie!"
