Mu Yunfan, Fu Xingchen, and Su Yizhi stepped into the nearby town with the hopes of the villagers on their shoulders. The market was bustling with people, filled with a cacophony of voices and a dazzling array of stalls. The three found an open space to display the agricultural products and handicrafts they had brought.
"Come and take a look! We have top-quality grains from our village, as well as exquisite handicrafts!" Mu Yunfan shouted, drawing the attention of many passersby. A middle-aged man dressed in satin strolled over and picked up a wooden carving to examine it. "This wooden carving shows some ingenuity, but I suspect the price isn't low?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
Fu Xingchen stepped forward and cupped his hands in greeting. "Good eye, sir! These are all carefully crafted by our fellow villagers. As for the price, it is certainly fair. Just look at this wood—it's hard and has clear grain, and the carving is exceptionally detailed. You won't find such quality elsewhere." The man nodded slightly and asked for more details before finally agreeing on a price and purchasing several wooden carvings.
With their first sale under their belt, the spirits of the three rose significantly. At that moment, a woman approached, showing interest in a piece of Tufu displayed nearby. Seeing this, Su Yizhi enthusiastically introduced it: "Madam, this Tufu is made from high-quality cotton, handwoven for warmth and durability. Feel it; it's incredibly soft." The woman gently ran her fingers over the fabric, her face lighting up with satisfaction. "It really is nice; I'll take a few pieces."
As business improved, however, nearby stall owners began to secretly sabotage them. One vendor deliberately raised his prices and shouted loudly, "Come see! Those cheap goods from other stalls are all inferior products; ours are genuine materials!" attempting to mislead customers. Mu Yunfan noticed this and felt displeased but refrained from acting impulsively. He turned to Fu Xingchen and Su Yizhi to whisper a few words before stepping into the center of the market and declaring loudly, "Dear villagers and customers! You can judge for yourselves the quality of our goods from our village. We don’t play tricks; we rely on real skills!" With that, he compared their Tufu to the fabric from the neighboring stall, showcasing everything from texture to color to durability one by one. The crowd nodded in agreement, growing increasingly trusting of Mu Yunfan's offerings.
While they were busy, a sudden commotion erupted at the other end of the market. An elderly man was surrounded by several burly men; his stall had been overturned, scattering goods everywhere. Mu Yunfan frowned. "Let’s go check it out." The three hurried over, with Fu Xingchen calling out loudly, "Why are you bullying an old man?"
The leading thug shot them a sideways glance. "Mind your own business! This old man has taken over our territory; he deserves some punishment."
Su Yizhi surveyed the area and noticed that there were no clear markers indicating ownership of stalls. He said, "This market is meant for everyone to trade; how can you claim territory? Your actions are utterly unreasonable." The thugs glared angrily at them and appeared ready to strike. Mu Yunfan crossed his arms and sneered, "What? You want to fight? We’re not afraid of trouble."
Seeing their formidable presence, the thugs hesitated before cursing under their breath and leaving.
After calming the elderly man down, Mu Yunfan picked up some scattered goods and discovered they were handmade bamboo baskets. "You have quite a skill there," he complimented.
The old man smiled wryly and shook his head. "No matter how good my skills are, they can't compete with these bullies."
Fu Xingchen had a sudden idea: "Why not collaborate with us? We can sell your bamboo baskets at our stall together; we’ll help you find buyers." A glimmer of hope flashed in the old man's eyes. "Really?"
Su Yizhi quickly nodded in agreement. "Of course! Rest assured; we won't let you down."
After some discussion, the old man agreed to collaborate. The three brought his bamboo baskets back to their stall and displayed them alongside their own goods. Mu Yunfan called out again: "New exquisite bamboo baskets! Handwoven—practical yet beautiful! Don’t miss out!" Before long, customers were drawn in by the bamboo baskets and began inquiring about prices.
After a busy afternoon, they sold most of their goods—not only solving the old man's problem but also opening up new opportunities for their village.
As the sun set in the west, the three returned home with their arms full of harvests and new collaboration prospects. It seemed that while the road to reform was long, each step taken brought them closer to achieving a better life for the people.
