In the darkness, the shimmering white snow reflected a pale light, and the biting cold wind cut through the skin like a blade. Lin Ning curled up, trying to warm himself. He quickly chopped down a few branches from a Birch Tree and prepared to return to the Snow Cave. Suddenly, he keenly heard the crunching sound of footsteps on the snow in the distance, which stood out starkly in the quiet night. Then, he distinctly heard a voice from White Jade Peak, tinged with urgency and anger: “Xiu'er, can’t you be a bit more rational? Even if you don’t care about yourself, you should think about our two lovely daughters! Look around—it's freezing cold, and the temperature is low enough to shatter bones. Are you really planning to let our precious daughters freeze to death out here in this wilderness? Feel their little hands; they’re already icy cold.”
Lin Xiu shouted at the top of her lungs, “I would rather let them freeze to death on this snowy mountain than let them follow you, that heartless father! You should reflect on your conscience; what you’ve done is inhumane! You disregard family ties and even want to harm my second brother, who grew up with you and helped you during your toughest times! For a little profit, you treat him so cruelly—truly a beast worse than pigs or dogs! And Ms. Yuan—she is our savior! Who knows if she’s alive or dead now? She risked her life to save us three when we were at our most desperate. If anything happens to her, I will never forgive you; I will never find peace until I die!”
As she spoke of her sorrow, Lin Xiu's previously strong voice gradually choked up, and she began to sob uncontrollably. Her cries echoed hauntingly in the cold night. Wiping her tears with her hands, she found that they froze into ice shards as soon as they fell. The more she thought about it, the angrier she became; her rage burned like an unquenchable flame. She shouted again, “If we can’t find my second brother, Ms. Yuan, and Ms. Cong, then we three would rather freeze to death on Changbai Mountain! No matter how cold this snowy mountain is, it can’t compare to your cruel heart!”
White Jade Peak’s face turned red with anger; veins bulged on his forehead as he exclaimed in exasperation, “You are simply unreasonable! I’m doing all this for our family to live better lives. Once we get that little benefit, we won’t have to suffer like this anymore. Besides, I haven’t really harmed your second brother; he has his own fortune waiting for him. As for Ms. Yuan and Ms. Cong, they might have already run away by now. Why should we waste time here in this freezing weather and risk our own lives? Stop being so willful and come back with me!”
Lin Xiu retorted angrily, “Ms. Yuan is poisoned; where could she run? She might have already succumbed to it! If we can’t find my second brother and Ms. Yuan, then let us three freeze to death on this snowy mountain!” Her voice was filled with anxiety and helplessness as if the whole world was against her. Hearing this, Lin Ning could no longer hold back; he shouted at Lin Xiu and White Jade Peak: “Xiu'er, Yufeng, stop arguing! Senior Sister Yuan is not in immediate danger; both of you come back with me to the Snow Cave and check on her!” His tone was firm and powerful as if trying to quell the argument.
Upon hearing Lin Ning's voice, Lin Xiu felt a surge of hope as if she had seen a glimmer of light in the darkness. Without hesitation, she quickly walked towards Lin Ning's voice as if it were her only hope.
White Jade Peak hesitated for a moment; he clearly struggled with whether or not to follow Lin Ning back. However, the cold of the snowy night ultimately overcame his hesitation. He gritted his teeth and finally followed Lin Xiu toward him. The two closely followed Lin Ning into the Snow Cave where he quickly reignited the fire pit; the warm glow eased the atmosphere inside slightly.
At that moment, Cong Rong stirred awake from her sleep. Rubbing her eyes, she saw White Jade Peak before her and immediately shouted angrily: “What are you doing here? Are you trying to harm us again? Haven't you done enough damage?” Her voice was filled with resentment and dissatisfaction over White Jade Peak's previous actions.
Facing Cong Rong's accusations, White Jade Peak appeared awkward and at a loss for words. He stammered, “Miss, it’s all a misunderstanding…” Lin Xiu shot him a fierce glare and retorted without mercy: “Don’t bother explaining; your explanations only make things worse!” After saying that, she ignored White Jade Peak entirely and gently set down the two infants she had been holding before slowly standing up unsteadily and walking over to Yuan Yueming.
When Lin Xiu saw Yuan Yueming’s pale face resembling paper and her breath so weak it seemed it could stop at any moment, her heart twisted painfully as tears streamed down like a flood breaking through a dam once more. She tightly grasped Yuan Yueming's hand and choked out: “Ms. Yuan, you must be strong; you have to get better soon! If anything happens to you, I will never find peace!”
Just then, Lin Ning suddenly let out an excited shout. Everyone turned towards him only to see a wild rabbit unexpectedly emerge from somewhere and dash into the nearby Snow Cave. Overjoyed by this sight, Lin Ning dashed forward in an instant and swiftly pulled the rabbit out from within the Snow Cave. The rabbit appeared dazed by this sudden turn of events and offered no resistance at all; Lin Ning easily captured it.
For them who had been starving for several days already, this rabbit was undoubtedly a welcome gift from heaven. Everyone was thrilled as they quickly skewered the plump rabbit over the fire pit for roasting. Before long, it was golden brown and crispy with an enticing aroma wafting through the air. They gathered around eagerly sharing this delicious meal together. Although there were no seasonings available, driven by hunger they still feasted heartily on the rabbit.
After finishing their meal, Lin Ning did not forget about Yuan Yueming. He prepared some snow water to boil ginseng for her carefully feeding it to her in hopes that it would bring some vitality and strength back to her.
The next morning dawned bright as sunlight broke through the clouds illuminating the snow-covered ground with dazzling silver light. Lin Ning carried Yuan Yueming on his back as they continued their journey deeper into Changbai Mountain. Lin Xiu held onto her two daughters tightly following closely behind him along with White Jade Peak and Cong Rong as they trudged through the white world together.
In Lin Xiu’s arms, both infants’ faces were flushed red from the cold resembling ripe apples. One of them, Bai Ruyun suddenly began wailing loudly—whether from cold or hunger was unclear—her cries ringing clear through the silent snowy mountain air. Bai Ruoshui seemed influenced by her sister's distress as she joined in crying loudly too; their cries intertwined forming a sorrowful duet.
Lin Ning looked at the three women in his arms feeling a pang of heartache; he couldn’t bear seeing them suffer alongside him in such frigid conditions so he said to Lin Xiu: “Xiu'er, take Yufeng down the mountain with the kids; it's too cold here—don’t let them freeze!” However, Lin Xiu remained stubbornly resolute holding tightly onto both children declaring firmly: “I will not go back until I see Ms. Yuan recover!” Though her voice was soft it was filled with determination.
Lin Ning understood Lin Xiu’s character well enough that his persuasion would likely be futile so he fell silent instead.
The group continued walking silently when suddenly dark clouds gathered overhead accompanied by howling winds that roared like a frenzied beast sweeping towards them raising waves of snow as if wanting to engulf everything in its path. Soon after that entire mountain began shaking violently as though unable to withstand such immense force.
Snow began sliding off from atop creating massive waves cascading downwards threateningly towards them while an air thick with suffocating fear enveloped them—the icy snowflakes whipped around by fierce winds stung their faces painfully.
Everyone felt their hearts tremble realizing that a terrible avalanche was imminent indeed—a thunderous roar echoed from afar like rolling thunder shaking their very souls.
Their gazes were drawn upwards toward the peak where thick layers of snow began moving slowly as if awakened by some mysterious force at first appearing sluggish but growing louder with each passing moment until its speed quickened drastically resembling an uncontrollable beast racing downwards unstoppable.
Wherever it passed everything was ruthlessly consumed—trees rocks or any obstacle crumbled beneath its might.
The vanguard of this avalanche came forth shrouded in dense snow mist resembling white claws reaching swiftly into every corner of valley seemingly wanting to blanket everything beneath its shadow.
Then came tons upon tons of snow surging forward like an overwhelming flood crashing downwards forming an enormous wall racing towards valley bottom at astonishing speed flooding what once had been tranquil valley transforming it into an icy battlefield instantly.
As avalanche approached surrounding temperatures plummeted sharply; frigid air swept through valley rapidly sending chills down spines making everyone shiver involuntarily while swirling snowflakes danced around like countless white spirits fluttering through air gracefully yet hiding deadly peril behind such beauty.
The power of avalanche was immense rendering anything caught within its grasp nearly helpless—it would obliterate trees roads possibly burying lives beneath leaving devastation behind bringing unimaginable disaster upon people caught unaware.
