"This is ridiculous," Lu Youyou thought. "Are they really treating the Special Investigation Team like fools? The person has already been brought back; how can they claim ignorance?"
She dared not meet Mo Meilin's gaze and instead focused on her hands clasped around the teacup. "I—I met him at Ji University Building."
Mo Meilin adopted the gentlest tone possible, trying to ease Lu Youyou's nervousness. "Relax, just relax. We only want to understand how you know each other. Can you elaborate on that?"
Behind the cameras and recording devices sat not only Zhang Yutao, the Special Investigation Team Leader, but also a psychology expert observing the proceedings. They would use Lu Youyou's description to construct a psychological profile of Xu Lie, which was why Mo Meilin was asking such detailed questions.
As Lu Youyou reflected on their acquaintance, she thought there was no harm in sharing her story. She spoke honestly, while the psychologist busily worked on modeling, and both Zhang Yutao and Mo Meilin listened with keen interest. If it weren't for the questioning, Mo Meilin might have been tempted to snack on some sunflower seeds while listening.
What a twist of fate! To be at Ji University Building waiting for a potential partner and somehow get entangled with that partner's classmate—only a drama could concoct such a plot!
"Xu Lie twisted his ankle while trying to get me out of the fire scene," she continued. "I just wanted to thank him, so I treated him to a meal—that's all."
When she mentioned the twisted ankle, Mo Meilin caught her pause clearly. Regardless of whether it was true or not, it was time to probe further.
The experienced Mo Meilin immediately seized the opportunity to break through Lu Youyou's defenses. "But according to our information, Xu Lie did not twist his ankle."
Lu Youyou looked startled. "Please don’t lie! We have gathered certain intelligence before coming to question you. If you don’t believe me, I can show you the surveillance footage from that day at Ji University Building; it clearly shows Xu Lie walking home normally after the explosion."
Lu Youyou had never faced such a situation before and suddenly felt flustered. Her hands clutched tightly around the teacup, using its warmth to soothe her cold palms.
"I—I don’t know," she stammered.
A normal person who truly had no idea would deny smoothly. But Lu Youyou’s fragmented denials practically screamed that she knew something but chose not to say it.
None of the Special Investigation Team members—Mo Meilin, Zhang Yutao, or the psychologist—were fooled.
Unaware that she had been seen through, Lu Youyou recalled her fabricated story about Xu Lie’s injury and borrowed from it: "I only heard him mention twisting his ankle when we talked on the phone. I really don’t know if he actually did or not. Even if you say there’s surveillance footage, couldn’t Xu Lie just endure the pain? Boys wouldn’t want to show a humiliating side of themselves."
Zhang Yutao behind the camera couldn’t help but sigh at her words. "It’s true; such deep feelings among students—what a beautiful memory."
The psychologist rolled his eyes secretly, annoyed that this leader’s comments were interfering with his profiling thoughts. However, since he was the team leader, he couldn’t say anything directly.
Mo Meilin knew that Lu Youyou was lying, but seeing her trying so hard to protect Xu Lie made her heart soften. The audience was even more direct, showering Lu Youyou with compliments through a barrage of comments that nearly lifted her to the heavens.
"I'm so moved! Lu Youyou's performance here is truly the highlight of the show. Even in such a tense situation, she still tries to cover for Xu Lie."
"Xu Lie! How could you leave her alone to bear everything?!"
"Let's take down Xu Lie and protect Youyou!"
