Several hours had passed since the highly publicized trial.
Lu Youyou watched as Mo Meilin stepped off the elevator and approached her, feeling a bit nervous as she asked, "Sister Mo, can I see him now?"
"Yes, you can," Mo Meilin sighed. The entire Special Investigation Team was experiencing a mix of emotions.
Was there joy? Certainly, with the successful capture of Xu Lie and the resolution of the bombing case, every team member would receive rewards from their superiors.
Was there resentment? Yes, Xu Lie had managed to escape the consequences of reform through labor.
Was there anger? Not really. Although Xu Lie had been quite a scoundrel, the Test Tube Technology he presented, if true, could genuinely help alleviate the population crisis.
This was a matter of global significance, involving the survival of the human race, and the members of the Special Investigation Team were not blind to the situation.
Xu Lie's treatment had changed; now he was much like Lu Youyou when she interned at the Special Investigation Team—eating and sleeping without a care. He could wander around the office as long as he didn’t attempt to escape; no one would pay him any mind.
Everyone said that only Zhang Yutao couldn’t stand Xu Lie, locking himself in his office every day for fear of being provoked by him again.
Now that Lu Youyou had been unable to see Xu Lie before, she was eager to ask about visiting him again and had been granted permission.
"Really? Thank you so much, Sister Mo!" Lu Youyou exclaimed. After assisting for three days, her relationship with Mo Meilin had grown closer.
"Come on, let’s go," Mo Meilin said with a smile at Lu Youyou's excited demeanor. "You seem quite eager about Xu Lie."
"I’m starting to wonder if you were ever threatened by him at all," she teased. "Those earlier testimonies you gave weren’t just to fool your sister, were they?"
Lu Youyou blushed and chuckled nervously, unsure how to respond.
Indeed, from her behavior while working for Xu Lie, she hardly seemed like a threatened victim at all.
Seeing this, Mo Meilin shook her head inwardly. It seemed that the psychologist's conclusion was incorrect; Lu Youyou did not have Stockholm syndrome but was simply a young girl in love.
At this point, Mo Meilin had no interest in probing further into the matter. Regardless of what happened with Lu Youyou, it was already over. She said no more and led Lu Youyou upstairs.
Returning to familiar ground felt particularly refreshing for Lu Youyou. When she assisted with investigations at the Special Investigation Team before, she had been worried about Xu Lie; now that she learned he had contributed significantly and was likely safe, her mood was entirely different.
Looking at the potted plants in the office brought her joy.
Mo Meilin caught a glimpse of Lu Youyou out of the corner of her eye. Witnessing the vibrant energy and excitement of the youthful girl, she couldn't help but question whether the decision about their future, determined by Gene Matching, was truly as Xu Lie had said—a form of confinement.
Before the two could reach Xu Lie's lounge, they unexpectedly ran into him while he was casually strolling around. Xu Lie was equally surprised to see Lu Youyou at the Special Investigation Team.
“Xu Lie!” Lu Youyou exclaimed, rushing forward. Her enthusiastic shout startled Mo Meilin, who was standing nearby.
Mo Meilin smiled and paused for a moment, contemplating whether to stay. Ultimately, she decided to turn away, leaving ample space for the two to talk privately.
Xu Lie quickly composed himself, his surprise fading: “Thank you. If it weren't for your help, there wouldn't be so many students willing to speak up for me.”
“Wait, how did you know that?” Lu Youyou asked, her mouth slightly agape in surprise.
