There was no reason for the Serpent Man to come looking for trouble!
William finally understood why Pustor was so on edge. The Serpent was the head of the Metropolitan Mafia and their greatest enemy to the Investigation Bureau. The Bureau had targeted the Serpent's gang multiple times, conducting raids and undercover operations, but most of their actions ended in failure. Only a few smaller operations managed to gather actual evidence and apprehend suspects.
According to Pustor, someone like the Serpent, a leader of such stature, would never bother with a rookie involved in smuggling. It was akin to being a crime lord in the underworld—commanding respect and having access to anything one desired. Would you really pay attention to a pickpocket at a train station?
Logically, the answer was no. Unless that pickpocket had some deep connections with you or was stealing something of great importance.
But tonight, things were different; the Serpent Man had come around.
Having dealt with many cases, Pustor quickly realized that something was off with the cargo on the transport ship. Perhaps these rookies involved in smuggling had some significant ties to the Serpent’s senior management. Only in that case would they attract the Serpent's interest.
Thus, Pustor made a decisive call for backup, adhering to one core principle: confront the Serpent head-on! No matter what the Serpent Man intended to do, it was certainly right for them at the Investigation Bureau to intervene and ensure that he did not succeed.
As for what was more important—the cargo on the transport ship or these rookies involved in smuggling—Pustor didn’t want to speculate further. They needed both people and goods; they would take everything back without overthinking it. Why waste brain cells on unnecessary thoughts?
After coming to this realization, William felt a surge of excitement. He hadn’t expected that his first day on the job would lead him to witness such a significant event. Just as he prepared to say something, there was a sudden gunshot!
In less than a second, bursts of gunfire from submachine guns erupted.
Pustor’s expression changed dramatically as he stopped paying attention to anyone else. He pressed his ear against a container, confirming that the bullets weren’t coming from their side before daring to peek out and observe.
To his astonishment, he discovered that those involved in smuggling on the transport ship were actually engaging in a shootout with the Serpent Man!
As Pustor observed the three members of the Serpent Squad firing their assault rifles, he quickly realized that one of them was missing. This group of rookies was acting a bit recklessly. Were they not novices? Or were they actually dangerous? Perhaps they were just too inexperienced, like young calves unafraid of tigers. They even dared to strike first and had taken down one of the Serpent Squad members.
Pustor's mind raced with thoughts, but he also recognized this as a prime opportunity: "Follow me!" Without waiting to see if William heard or could keep up, he crouched low and darted out like a cat.
Using containers and forklifts for cover, he stealthily made his way to the underside of the transport ship. Throughout this time, the sounds of gunfire above continued unabated. William closely followed Pustor, though his movements were not very agile or discreet.
Thanks to the ongoing gunfight on the transport ship, neither side noticed the approach of the Investigation Bureau. The audience was captivated by the action unfolding before them.
"Truly, this is like an action movie; there’s gunfire every day!"
"Oh my God, I love this character! So proactive! Such brave knightly qualities!"
