The appearance of the aliens brought a strange sense of fortune, and overall order was, albeit barely, restored. It sounds counterintuitive, but as news of the extraterrestrials spread across the internet, it triggered a wave of panic within people, leading to the emergence of numerous mobs and countless incidents of looting and arson. However, when the aliens truly revealed themselves, it caused yet another wave of panic among the populace.
This time, no mobs formed, nor were there any acts of vandalism; instead, an odd semblance of basic order returned. Anyone else would find it hard to believe such a development was possible—shouldn't there have been more chaos and greater riots? Yet, that was precisely what happened. At least the aliens' ability to disguise themselves as humans was enough to quell the frenzied mobs.
The aliens could blend in as humans at any moment, and that capability was terrifying. It frightened the mobs into submission, fearing they might attack an alien and end up captured for experimentation. They might even face a more gruesome fate—being skinned by the aliens for their disguises. Hadn't they heard what the aliens said? The highest reward they offered humanity was to take on the appearance of a specific human.
The fiery figure that had just appeared in a video from the sky served as a glaring warning. The mobs certainly did not want such a reward.
As night fell, it draped the city in a veil of darkness. The once bustling streets were now eerily quiet, devoid of the gunfire and flames that had marked the day. Yet, it was also far from the vibrant nightlife that usually characterized the city. At this moment, the streets were empty; if not for the lights still shining from nearby buildings, one could easily mistake it for a ghost town.
Walking along the silent path, William kept a certain distance from Rims, glancing around cautiously. He felt somewhat relieved; it seemed order had temporarily returned. Rims was also observing the shops that had already been ransacked: Was this really what they called order restored? In the past, shops that had been looted would have already reported to the Investigation Bureau for repairs and insurance claims. Now, those stores had become ruins, with no one willing to come and address the situation.
William could only sigh; there was nothing else he could do.
Ding!
In the silent night, the sudden ringing of a cellphone was somewhat startling, causing Rims to jump slightly. William's heart raced for a moment before he realized it was his own phone.
He picked it up and saw that it was Director Anthony calling! William hurriedly answered, and before Anthony could greet him, he unusually asked in a gentle tone, "William? How's everything going with Cross Street?"
Huh? Hearing his director speak like this caught William off guard for a moment, and he immediately wanted to slap himself. What was he thinking? It was already time to report! "Everything is going very smoothly!"
Perhaps due to his excitement or the overwhelming silence around him, William's sudden shout startled Rims beside him. The nearby houses with their incandescent lights flickered off in response.
The camera had been following William, capturing this scene reminiscent of a midnight horror film, much to the delight of the audience.
"There are too many cowards around. If it were my friend Fili and me in this environment, we definitely wouldn't be scared by a cellphone ringing."
"Don't be too confident. William has been suppressing the Mob during the day and witnessing aliens at dusk. With that kind of psychological pressure, any little noise at night would scare him. As they say in the East, grass and trees are all soldiers?"
"Wow, this is too funny! The public around them got so scared they turned off their lights. Hahaha, do they think William is an alien deliberately making noise to lure them out for easy capture?"
