The next day, when Anthony arrived at the Investigation Bureau, he found William and Rims waiting by his office door. William, with heavy dark circles under his eyes, clutched a cup of black coffee, while Rims had his eyes closed, tightly holding onto a picture frame.
"Director, you're here!" William exclaimed excitedly upon seeing Anthony, his spirits lifting instantly as if he had shaken off sleep. He nudged Rims awake.
Rims blinked groggily, momentarily ignoring everything else as he tightened his grip on the frame to ensure it hadn’t been lost. Only after confirming its safety did he breathe a sigh of relief and notice Anthony.
He quickly stood up. "Director."
"It seems you both had quite a fruitful trip," Anthony remarked, not paying much attention to the picture frame as he opened the office door and invited his two subordinates inside.
He personally poured fresh coffee for William and Rims. As he ground the coffee beans, William was eager to report their findings but was waved off by Anthony, who signaled for him to wait.
William felt like a ticking time bomb, unable to speak and fidgeting restlessly like an ant on a hot stove.

Finally, after leisurely grinding two cups of coffee, Anthony handed them to his subordinates and gestured for them to sit down. "William, Rims. I understand your anxiety about what you’ve accomplished."
"Yes," William replied impatiently. "What could possibly be more important than Xu Lie's message?"
He was on the verge of interrupting Anthony when the news he was about to share turned out to be significant: "Our Investigation Bureau is going to be disbanded."
Following this, all members of the Investigation Bureau under the Great Federation would be merged into the Alien Life Intelligence Agency.
William’s mouth fell open in shock; no words came out as if he had been struck from behind. His mind went blank, thoughts abruptly interrupted.
The Investigation Bureau was going to cease to exist? The institution that had persisted since the emergence of the Great Federation was being entirely dismantled?
What do they even count for?
In the port, they fought fiercely against the Serpent, suppressing the Mob during the day to maintain order, and investigating Xu Lie during the late-night shifts, taking turns to keep watch and wait for Anthony.
And now, suddenly being told that all of it was meaningless?
Not only was William bewildered, but even the viewers following the drama were left slack-jawed by this move from the Great Federation.
“I thought those old folks in the online meeting were just talking nonsense, but they’re actually serious?”
“It’s not hard to understand. Those old geezers are probably desperate to get their hands on that Alien Life rejuvenation drug, which is why they’re cooperating so well. Besides, it’s just a crackdown; the Investigation Bureau is merging with the Intelligence Agency, but not much else is changing.”
“There will still be some initial chaos and costs to pay, but it won’t be those old geezers who suffer; it’ll be the innocent public at the bottom.”
Rims was relatively calm. When he heard the news, he was startled but quickly realized: it was about Alien Life?
He hadn’t forgotten that Alien Life had made demands of humanity, claiming they wanted to conduct research on collective human nature. They needed humanity—or rather, they needed the Great Federation—to deal with the Investigation Bureau and Arms Division. As long as that could be accomplished, Alien Life would reward humanity with what they desired.
But wasn’t this efficiency a bit too fast? Even if there were some scoundrels in humanity's ranks attempting to surrender, shouldn’t they be a bit more patient?
