Before the Serpent's members could disembark, three trucks sped away, resembling frightened thieves fleeing at the sight of their master returning. Charles happened to be seated in the lead armored vehicle. "Chase them! I can smell it—the scent of sewer rats," he commanded.
The driver and his subordinates were accustomed to their boss's slow, deliberate speech and showed no surprise as they followed orders to let the other armored vehicles take the lead while they trailed behind.
The trucks roared down the streets with an imposing presence, their reckless speed reminiscent of luxury sports cars even in the dead of night. The pursuing armored vehicles, filled with reckless Serpent members, showed no mercy. They had no intention of letting the three trucks escape easily.
The driver focused on the chase while the co-driver climbed out through the sunroof. Two others leaned out of the rear windows, ready to fire. The truck's rear compartment was sturdy, reinforced with two layers of metal and packed with supplies. It was unlikely that the Serpent's firepower could penetrate such heavy barriers to harm the truck driver. Thus, their primary target was the rear tires.
If they could blow a tire, everything else would fall into place. However, aiming while speeding was no easy feat; most of the Serpent members were relying on luck more than skill. Many bullets struck the truck's rear doors with loud bangs, startling Rims nearly out of his seat.
"Fack! Damn it!" Rims cursed repeatedly, his foot pressed firmly on the accelerator, yet he still couldn't shake off the Serpents. In his desperation, he wished he could make the truck fly.
Up front, Anthony realized they couldn't escape from their pursuers either. He drove at high speed while grabbing the walkie-talkie with one hand. "Everyone be careful; there's a bend ahead. Slow down as we turn, then we’ll jump out and run into the alleys!"
He warned them that they might not have time to regroup and urged everyone to escape individually without taking their walkie-talkies but to keep their weapons ready.
As he finished speaking, the bend loomed closer. Anthony slammed on the brakes and pulled up the handbrake, managing to execute a drift with the massive truck!
William and Rims had just started driving and dared not attempt such a maneuver. While they admired Anthony’s skill, they focused on slowing down for the turn.
As they rounded it, they saw Anthony's truck come to a halt with its driver's door wide open—Anthony was nowhere in sight. Before their vehicle had even fully stopped, both men hurriedly leaped out of their seats.
They rolled upon landing to avoid injury and quickly dashed into the nearby alleys without pausing for breath.
The members of the Serpent Squad that followed behind crashed into the bend.
Thud! Thud!
A series of dull thuds echoed as they collided. Fortunately, they were all in armored vehicles, so the occupants inside were merely jostled around without suffering much harm.
Cursing, they climbed out of their vehicles, eager to check on the truck.
But then came Charles's latest order: no checking the truck; they must have fled into the alleys. They needed to pursue quickly.
With the boss's command, the underlings surged into the narrow alleyways, scattering in all directions to chase after their targets.
Once the underlings had dispersed, Charles leisurely stepped out of the vehicle and strolled over to the front of the truck, taking his time to open the passenger door and sit down.
In the driver's seat, Anthony was grinning as he waited for him. "You made it?"
In this chase scene, the camera would surely focus on the protagonist, William, so neither of the Bionic Persons were worried about being spotted.
"Yeah, I'm here to take you to safety." Charles casually tossed a cigar over to Anthony and pulled out another one for himself. "The Great Federation's Senior Management is ruthless as ever."
"At your level, they can just abandon you without a second thought."
