As Pei Guanjing rose from his slumber, the sky was just beginning to brighten.
The deep blue expanse overhead seemed to be sliced open by a sharp blade, with countless rays of sunlight spilling forth like liberated spirits from the abyssal gaps, draping the earth in a golden veil.
Holding the wooden token given to him by Captain Li, Pei Guanjing made his way directly to the canteen.
However, he was already a step too late.
Just an hour ago, the troops led by Ye Chen and Lou Yu had set off, heading towards Cangzhou.
"Are you saying they just left?" Pei Guanjing stood in the shadow by the door, his figure seemingly merging with the darkness. The expression on his face was obscured, but his voice carried a hint of coldness.
Wang Xiangzi had also just risen and was preparing breakfast. He stood before Pei Guanjing, noticeably shorter in stature.
"Yes, they left just an hour ago," Wang Xiangzi replied as he wiped his hands on an apron. He then looked at Pei Guanjing with curiosity. "Doctor Pei, what's going on? Are you looking for Ye Chen? Did something happen when he brought you food before? Did that rascal…"
"It’s nothing. Recently, there have been many injured at the Medical Camp, and I wanted to find a few more apprentices to help out," Pei Guanjing said calmly, his tone indifferent.
"Oh! So you're looking for apprentices to assist!" Wang Xiangzi's mood immediately lightened, but he quickly reacted again. "Wait? Doctor Pei, are you saying you want Ye Chen to learn medicine?"
Pei Guanjing nodded and gazed toward the corner of the canteen as if envisioning Ye Chen's figure. He slowly spoke, "Yes, I see that he is clever and quick-witted. Some apprentices at the Medical Camp cannot read and only recognize simple herbs, while Ye Chen happens to know some herbs as well. So I thought it would be good for him to come help out at the Medical Camp."
"That's a good thing!" Wang Xiangzi forced a smile. Although he was smiling, the corners of his eyes involuntarily drooped.
The new recruits from Firestarter this month didn’t leave a single one behind; they all got taken away.
"Then, when Ye Chen returns, should I have him work at the Medical Camp?" Wang Xiangzi asked tentatively, a hint of hesitation in his eyes.
"That’s fine. Please have Chef Wang inform him to come to the Medical Camp," Pei Guanjing replied indifferently, then turned to leave. "I see he has knowledge of herbs; staying at the Medical Camp might be more beneficial than remaining at the Canteen."
Wang Xiangzi opened his mouth as if wanting to say something but fell silent, ultimately watching Pei Guanjing’s departing figure with a sense of helplessness.
Ye Chen’s prospects at Firehead Camp were indeed limited. If he went to learn medicine from Doctor Pei, he might even gain recognition from the higher-ups. Staying here day after day doing simple tasks at the Canteen was certainly not as promising as developing at the Medical Camp.
After leaving the Canteen, Pei Guanjing headed straight back to the Medical Camp and began methodically packing his belongings.
Xiao Chen watched Pei Guanjing's actions in surprise and tilted his head curiously, asking, "Doctor Pei, are you going out? Or are you going to gather herbs?" He blinked and added, "But why aren’t you bringing a backpack? How will you carry the herbs back otherwise?"
Pei Guanjing shot him a cold glance that felt like shards of ice, making Xiao Chen shiver as if he had fallen into an ice cellar. Why did Doctor Pei’s gaze seem so terrifying?
Realizing his emotions had slipped out a bit, Pei Guanjing nodded slightly and pulled out a letter from his sleeve, handing it to Xiao Chen. His expression returned to its usual calm as he said, "This is a letter for General He. I’ll be going out to gather herbs for the next few days; we’ve run out of some materials like Dang Shen and Bletilla in the Medicine Hall. Doctor Liu is coming back today; if he asks about it, just give him this letter, understood?"
Pei Guanjing handed the letter to Xiao Chen with great consideration. His demeanor was polite and proper, but Xiao Chen couldn’t shake off a chill that ran down his spine. He quickly replied, "Understood, Doctor Pei."
Although he wanted to mention that Doctor Liu had already brought back those herbs in his recent purchase and there was no need for Doctor Pei to go out gathering them, he held his tongue. He felt that saying those words might lead to something terrible happening.
Pei Guanjing walked alone out of the Military Camp gates, continuing forward for two miles. Only after he was certain he had completely left the scouts' observation range did he turn around and head towards a slope.
Before long, a shadow quietly appeared behind him.
"Mo Yu pays his respects to Young Master. What are your orders?" Mo Yu had been stationed at a distance from the Military Camp, close enough to maintain contact with Pei Guanjing.
Pei Guanjing's expression was calm as he gazed into the distance and slowly said, "Go to the nearby towns and use my name to acquire Dang Shen, Bletilla, and other medicinal herbs. Return here in three days to wait for me to collect them."
Mo Yu clasped his hands respectfully and replied, "Yes, Young Master."
The reason Pei Guanjing chose to keep Mo Yu instead of Mo Sheng in Lan Prefecture was largely due to Mo Yu's consistent obedience to his commands. He never asked unnecessary questions, making him a reliable aide.
