"Aunt Wang, it's me, Yang Qinghe!"
"Yang Qinghe!"
Hearing the response from outside, Aunt Wang's voice brightened, and her footsteps became lighter.
With a creak, the old wooden door was opened by a kindly-looking old lady. She glanced over and noticed that Yang Qinghe wasn't even wearing a coat, causing her to frown.
"You child, why aren't you wearing a coat? Come in quickly and warm up! You really don't take care of yourself at all. Hurry up and rest inside; the firewood you chopped for me last time isn't even burned up yet. There's no need to rush!"
As Aunt Wang chattered away, she didn't notice the little tail following Yang Qinghe.
Yang Qinghe brought Yu Songyu into the house. The room directly opposite the door looked somewhat like a kitchen, with two stoves on either side and large pots sitting atop them. There were also some old bowls and chopsticks on the counter.
The room was quite small; apart from a rickety wooden cabinet standing against the wall, there was nothing else. The walls hadn't even been painted; it was just a very primitive mud-brick house.
What a foolish boy! It's freezing outside, below minus thirty or forty degrees, and he doesn't know to wear more?
Aunt Wang patted the edge of the kang (a traditional heated bed) and gestured for Yang Qinghe to sit down. Turning around, she finally noticed Yu Songyu following closely behind him.
"Oh my! Where did you find this girl? She’s so delicate and tender-skinned, like a fairy from heaven!"
The oversized coat on the young girl wasn’t Yang Qinghe's; whose could it be? Aunt Wang looked at them both with an expression that seemed to see through their secrets.
"Aunt Wang, this is a girl I met in the mountains just now. Please get her some hot water to drink!"
Aunt Wang, understanding the hint, went out to boil water, leaving only Yu Songyu and Yang Qinghe in the room.
"Where are you from? How did you end up lying in the snow?"
"I'm from Henan Province; I'm a Zhiqing (educated youth). I got separated from three others on the way!"
Separated? It was clear that those two women had deliberately abandoned her. It was evident they were plotting something sinister.
However, being new to this place, she didn’t want to reveal too much about herself to someone she didn’t know well.
Separated?
The man felt suspicious; the mountains were vast. If someone went missing, just a few shouts could carry far enough for anyone nearby to hear. Surely they wouldn’t be completely unheard?
So what was this seemingly fragile young girl hiding?
"Which Youth Commune are you going to?"
The man remained calm, not in a hurry to expose anything.
"Shili Zhou Forest Farm, Youth Commune."
"Oh, what a coincidence! That's your Production Leader!"
Aunt Wang said as she brought a bowl of warm water sweetened with sugar to Yu Songyu.
"Hello, I'm Yang Qinghe!"
The man's voice was magnetic and pleasant.
"Hello, I'm Yu Songyu! Pine from 'Song' and Elm from 'Yu'!"
A few days ago, we received notice that new Zhiqing were coming, and it turns out it’s you all!
Because the Zhiqing in the courtyard had taken good care of Aunt Wang, she was also willing to get close to them.
Hearing that Yu Songyu was also a Zhiqing, she hurriedly stepped forward and warmly took her hand.
"Dear girl, come sit on the kang to warm up! You all chat for a bit; I’ll go make some food. We need something hot to eat!"
As Aunt Wang spoke, she reached for the water jug beside Yu Songyu, but unexpectedly lost her balance, causing Yu Songyu's pants to get soaked.
"Oh dear, look at my age; I’m just not steady anymore. I’m so sorry about this!"
Aunt Wang hastily grabbed a cloth to wipe it up, but unfortunately, the water soaked in too quickly for her efforts to make any difference.
"Aunt Wang, it's no trouble at all. But if it's convenient for you, could you find me a pair of pants to change into?"
Yu Songyu was not upset; her tone was gentle.
Yang Qinghe observed the girl before him; she seemed different from anyone he had seen before. There was something hidden in her gaze that he wanted to articulate but couldn’t quite express.
"Okay, okay! I’ll go get one right now!"
Aunt Wang quickly pulled a quilt from the kang and wrapped it around Yu Songyu before heading out to find some pants.
Yang Qinghe felt his face flush and followed suit, getting up to tend to the fire.
