As they reached the foot of the mountain, the sky was nearly dark. Xu Zhuzhen, concerned that Yu Songyu might get lost since it was her first time here, kindly escorted her to Aunt Wang's doorstep.
"How was your first day at work? Come wash your hands and have dinner!" Aunt Wang called out warmly, scooping a large ladle of hot water from a big pot into a basin.
For a moment, Yu Songyu felt a wave of disorientation. She had only come to stay temporarily, yet Aunt Wang was treating her so kindly. Ever since her mother passed away all those years ago, it seemed like no one had cared for her like this—except for her ex-boyfriend. Her nose tinged with a hint of sorrow.
She thought of Chi Hao, her ex-boyfriend. She couldn't understand how they had once been so close. His meticulous care and affection for her—was it all fake, just an act? The day she heard him call Chen Luzhi "baby," she felt as if she were shattering inside.
Why was her fate so cruel? It was one thing to have distant relatives and another to be betrayed by friends. After finally meeting a man she believed loved her wholeheartedly, it all fell apart.
She felt an impulse to confront him, but they had loved each other once; surely he had loved her too? She didn’t want to see him acting in front of her, nor did she have the energy to play along; it might be more than she could bear.
Love wasn’t everything in her life. Since she had loved and lost, there was no need to cling to it any longer. What mattered now was living well according to her own preferences; everything else was unimportant.
Yu Songyu snapped back to reality; she had been lost in thought for too long. In this era, there were few entertainment activities and no nightlife; people were accustomed to going to bed early when darkness fell.
After bidding Aunt Wang goodnight and securing the door, Yu Songyu felt a pang of concern for Bai Jie and wanted to check on her. Once Aunt Wang's lights were out, she held her breath and in an instant found herself in another space.
She quickly changed into some clothes, grabbed her phone, bought some water, and took a taxi to the hospital.
In the hospital room, Bai Jie’s mother was peeling an apple for her.
"Auntie!" Yu Songyu set down the water and greeted her.
"Oh my! Xiao Yu is here! I heard from Bai Jie; we owe you so much," Bai Jie’s mother said with tears welling in her eyes, her voice trembling. If it hadn’t been for the timely medical assistance, Bai Jie might not have made it.
"Mom, I want to talk to Xiao Yu alone for a bit. Can you go get us something to eat?"
"Sure!"
Bai Jie's mother understood the situation and left the room, closing the door behind her. She knew the two girls must have a lot to discuss.
Bai Jie had a million questions for Yu Songyu. Ever since she woke up, she had been trying to call Yu Songyu, but no one answered. Learning that it was Yu Songyu who brought her to the hospital eased her worries a little.
"Xiao Yu, what on earth happened?"
Yu Songyu wanted to tell the truth, but she felt it wasn't the right time yet. If she recklessly mentioned her space, not only would Bai Jie not believe her, but it might also scare her.
"Not long after we cut our wrists, a guard found us. He was Chinese. Maybe he felt sorry for us and helped us escape."
"Did everyone escape? What about Chen Luzhi?"
"Everyone escaped? How is that possible? Maybe he helped us because he saw we were losing too much blood and were about to die."
Yu Songyu didn't want to mention Chen Luzhi; his fate had nothing to do with her.
"Then it was him who arranged for us to return to Hua Guo so quickly!"
"Yes, and he also found someone to bandage our wounds."
Anyway, Bai Jie had passed out at that time, so she could say anything now.
"You look much better!"
Yu Songyu wanted to change the subject quickly; she knew that saying too much could lead to trouble, and she was afraid Bai Jie would start probing deeper.
"Yeah, I lost a lot of blood, but it's nothing serious. I just need some time to recover. Xiao Yu, how are you? You seem to be in good spirits!"
"Mm, I'm okay too; the bleeding was stopped in time!"
Yu Songyu glanced at the time on her phone.
"Bai Jie, I'm relieved to see you're okay. Take good care of yourself during your recovery. You might not be able to reach me for a while; I've been through a lot recently, and my mind is quite chaotic. I want to find a peaceful place in the mountains for some time."
"Alone? It's too unsafe for a girl like you to go by yourself; let me go with you!"
Bai Jie clearly remembered their conversation before they attempted suicide: no matter this life or the next, they promised to be good friends. There was no way she would let her best friend take risks alone.
Xiao Jie, I really just want to be alone. You don't need to worry; I will take good care of myself.
