"Aunt Wang, I'm here!"
Yu Songyu's mood was bright, her greeting cheerful and lively.
"Coming! The food is in the pot, keeping warm for you!"
Aunt Wang wiped her hands on her apron, smiling as she poured water for Yu Songyu.
"Aunt Wang, look!"
Yu Songyu opened her bundle and took out its contents.
"Oh my, why is this vest so light? Will it keep me warm?"
The old lady was too worried about the young girl lacking life experience, fearing she might be deceived.
"Aunt Wang, this is filled with down, that's why it's light!"
"Down?"
"Down is the soft fluff from ducks; it's both light and warm. Here, take this brown vest and try it on!"
Yu Songyu picked up the vest and handed it to Aunt Wang.
"Oh no, I don’t want it! You keep it for yourself; I have clothes to wear, I don’t need it."
"Aunt Wang, this vest was bought specifically in your size. If you don't want it, it won't fit me either! Besides, I'm staying here with you; if you won't accept even a piece of clothing from me, how can I feel at ease living here?"
"You've already brought food supplies; how can that count as staying here?" Aunt Wang chuckled. "You, a little girl like Ji Qingqing, willing to come here and keep me company, makes me happy enough!"
That much was true; ever since Yu Songyu arrived, the old lady's mood had brightened significantly, making the home feel livelier.
"Then you must accept it! If you don’t take it, I won’t be happy. It can't just be you who’s happy!"
Yu Songyu pouted playfully, pretending to be upset as she pushed the items toward Aunt Wang.
Seeing her little expression, Aunt Wang had no choice but to relent. "Fine! I’ll accept it! This little girl can be quite stubborn! Tonight I'll make you Braised Pork!"
Once Aunt Wang smiled and stopped refusing, Yu Songyu happily carried her things into her room.
As soon as the door closed, Aunt Wang's eyes turned red. She had lived a hard life; her marriage was short-lived and her connection with her children was weak.
When she was just over twenty years old, her husband had gone up the mountain to dig ginseng and fell off a cliff to his death, leaving behind a son and a daughter.
She lived alone with her two children, and even though life was tough, she had once remarried. It wasn't that she couldn't find a partner or that no one wanted her; it was just that when she thought about being with another man, she knew there would be his children too. The situation for her two kids would surely become complicated.
She had hoped that once her son grew up, in a few years he would marry and their lives would improve. But who would have thought that one summer, during the sweltering heat, her son would rush home from outside, run straight to the large water vat, and drink water endlessly.
Before long, he was in serious trouble. The doctor at the clinic said his lungs had been shocked by the cold water and there was no hope left. A few days later, a girl from the neighboring village died during childbirth, and both mother and child were lost—another tragedy to bear.
The village saw her plight and knowing she was older and unable to earn much, they decided to give her special care. Every month, they provided her with some money and a bit of food to help her get by.
There were times when Aunt Wang contemplated ending it all; living like this felt meaningless, and she thought it might be better to die and save some food for the family. However, ever since Yang Qinghe came to the village a couple of months ago, Aunt Wang's life had improved significantly. He often came over to help chop wood and fetch water. Whether he hunted game in the mountains or caught fish and shrimp in the river, he frequently brought food for her.
Those wild vegetables and mushrooms that she couldn’t finish were dried for winter. She thought her life would continue like this forever, but having someone to care about gave her the motivation to keep going.
Then unexpectedly came little Yu Zhiqing. The moment she saw the child, Aunt Wang felt an inexplicable fondness in her heart. Looking at her was like gazing at her own granddaughter. To her surprise, this child was so understanding; it had been a long time since Aunt Wang felt such warmth in her heart.
After they finished their meal, they sat on the warm kang chatting. Yu Songyu took out a piece of coarse cloth bought from the Supply and Marketing Cooperative and placed it on the small table by the kang.
