The gate to Aunt Wang's courtyard was open. As Yang Qinghe stepped inside, he could hear the lively chatter of two people inside the house.
Yu Songyu was like a lark, making Aunt Wang laugh uncontrollably. For some reason, Yang Qinghe found himself smiling as well.
"Aunt Wang!"
Before entering the house, Yang Qinghe always made it a point to greet others; it was basic courtesy.
"Oh, Yang Qinghe is here! Come in, come in!" Aunt Wang's smile widened as she quickly got up to fetch him a glass of water.
"What are you two up to?" Yang Qinghe asked, noticing several pieces of cut fabric laid out on the kang table.
"Xiao Yu bought some cloth and asked me to sew her a bag. We were just discussing how to go about it!" Aunt Wang replied as she put on her shoes and went to get a bowl.
"I’ve never carried a backpack before; I’m not quite used to it!" Yu Songyu quickly explained, feeling a bit self-conscious about spending money on something that seemed unnecessary given their limited funds.
Her smile had not faded; she had just been chatting happily with Aunt Wang, and now, with a bit of sweat on her brow, her cheeks were flushed like ripe apples, making one want to take a bite.
"Here!"
The man, though young-looking, had an air of maturity about him.
"Captain Yang," Yu Songyu said as she pulled out a large rabbit-shaped Milk Candy from her pocket and handed it to Yang Qinghe.
"I—"
Seeing that he wasn't inclined to take it, Yu Songyu quickly added, "Captain Yang, this is from my parents. Don’t worry; I’ll pay you back within a month at most!"
"You don’t need to rush to pay me back; I don’t need it!"
Why was this girl always so concerned about repaying him? Was that really what she meant?
Just then, Aunt Wang walked in, and Yu Songyu quickly unwrapped the candy and stuffed it into Aunt Wang's mouth.
Aunt Wang smiled, her eyes curving into crescent moons.
Yu Songyu picked up a piece of candy and glanced at Yang Qinghe. "Do you want it?"
"Yes!" Yang Qinghe found himself responding without thinking, as if under a spell.
With quick movements, Yu Songyu unwrapped the candy and held it up to Yang Qinghe's lips. "Captain Yang, is it sweet?"
"Mm, sweet."
Yang Qinghe felt his ears suddenly flush red; the candy was sweet in his mouth, but what he felt inside was even sweeter!
Aunt Wang noticed the redness of Yang Qinghe's ears. Having been through similar experiences herself, she understood the meaning behind it all. "Yang Qinghe, why are your ears so red?"
With someone so close, Yang Qinghe wasn't just blushing in his ears; his entire face felt like it was on fire. Thankfully, he reacted quickly. "I just came down from the mountain; I must be cold!"
He pretended to rub his ears, hoping Aunt Wang wouldn't say another word.
"I’ve already thrown the rabbit and chicken into the coop," Aunt Wang said. "You two can stew them when you have time!"
"Great, great! Thanks to Xiao Yu, we’ll be able to eat rabbit meat twice this week!" Aunt Wang laughed heartily. Her laughter wasn’t just about the food; it was also because of Yang Qinghe, whose little thoughts were almost too obvious to hide.
"Huh? How is this thanks to my good fortune?" Yu Songyu looked up from the fabric she had been examining, her expression puzzled. Did that mean if she hadn’t come, Yang Qinghe wouldn’t have brought the rabbit?
She remembered Aunt Wang telling her that Yang Qinghe used to bring game over frequently before. However, she didn’t realize that even when he did bring game, it wasn’t as often as now.
Aunt Wang knew that Yang Qinghe was shy and that there should be limits to joking around.
