"Have you eaten enough?"
"Yes, I’m full. This hot noodle soup feels really good in my stomach!"
After finishing their meal, the two of them left. After all, they were on a mission and couldn’t linger too long. They carried their Mountain Goods and spent the entire afternoon wandering through several streets.
Thanks to Xu Zhuzhen accompanying them, there were several times when she simply shouldered the Ma Bag and walked off, her strength rivaling that of a man. Unfortunately, the results weren’t as promising as Yu Songyu had hoped; there were hardly any people around to ask, let alone buy.
"Hey, young ladies, why don’t you check that street over there? People will be getting off work soon!" An elderly woman pointed toward a street not far away. Perhaps she couldn’t bear to watch them struggle any longer, so she offered them a clear path.
There were several factories down that way, and whether people were coming or going, they all had to pass through that street.
"Thank you, grandma!" Yu Songyu quickly expressed her gratitude. How could she have forgotten that this was a town where many people worked? It was still working hours; how could there be so many idle folks wandering around?
Just as Yu Songyu opened the Ma Bag to arrange the shoes, knee pads, and gloves neatly, she saw a large group of people in work uniforms approaching. Some were pushing their bicycles while others walked in groups, chatting and laughing as they made their way toward them.
"Hey, Xiaoli, look! There’s someone selling cotton gloves over there!" A sharp-eyed girl spotted the colorful cotton gloves displayed on Yu Songyu’s Ox Cart from a distance.
"If you like them, come take a look!"
Yu Songyu wasn’t shy about calling out to others; she didn’t feel embarrassed at all about it.
"What are these?" A passing woman pointed at the Ma Bag filled with Mountain Goods.
"Ma’am, this is Wei Cai; it’s really delicious!" Yu Songyu had done her homework beforehand. Wei Cai was tedious to prepare but highly nutritious. In later years, it could sell for quite a bit per pound, and most dried Wei Cai was exported.
"Oh my, it looks so dark! How do you eat it?"
Although this woman was from the north, it was understandable that she was unfamiliar with the wild vegetables in the mountains, especially given the inconvenient transportation and the difficulty of getting good things out.
"Big sister, this Wei Cai can be soaked in water. It’s great for cold dishes, stir-frying with pork belly, or even steaming it as a braised dish!" Yu Songyu enthusiastically promoted her product; after all, this was her first customer.
"Is it really that delicious?" The big sister seemed skeptical, but there was a hint of interest in her eyes.
"How about this: you can buy a little to try first. If you don’t like it, come back tomorrow and I’ll give you a full refund!"
"A full refund?" The big sister wondered if she had misheard. Could there really be such a good deal?
However, seeing the sincerity in the young girl’s eyes, she didn’t seem like someone trying to deceive her. The big sister decided to buy some to taste. "Alright, give me a pound then. How much is it per pound?"
"One dollar fifty!"
"What? Is this wild vegetable made of gold? Why is it so expensive?" The big sister hesitated upon hearing the price.
"Big sister, it's not expensive at all! This is dried produce! It takes ten pounds of fresh Wei Cai to make just one pound of dried Wei Cai! Plus, once you soak it, it expands; you can eat a lot from just one pound!"
"Well then, I’ll just take half a pound for now!"
Yu Songyu exchanged a knowing glance with Xu Zhuzhen, who immediately understood and took out a scale borrowed from their hometown.
At that moment, Yu Songyu couldn’t read the scale herself, so she had to rely on Xu Zhuzhen to help her out. Half a pound would do; although it wasn’t much, it still marked the beginning of her venture!
