Yu Songyu patted the listening device on her body, feeling uncertain about how it worked and whether the other party could still hear her from a distance.
"Hiss!" Officer Wang inhaled sharply, nearly deafened by the noise created by Yu Songyu. It was his fault for not telling her that she was wearing a listening tracker. They had deliberately held back to let the other side lower their guard, avoiding any actions that might alert them.
At this moment, they were very close to the village where their target was located, and other officers would soon arrive. If all went well, they should be able to find Yu Songyu quickly.
"Hey! Stop the car! What are you doing?"
On a narrow road still some distance from the target village, several men wielding machetes suddenly emerged from the dark trees on both sides of the road. The officer driving slammed on the brakes just in time to avoid hitting them.
"Brothers, we’re just out for a drive and got lost. I don’t have much on me, but here’s some money for a few packs of cigarettes!" The officer reached into his pocket and politely handed over his limited cash through the rolled-down window to one of the men.
"To hell with you! Stop talking nonsense and get out of the car!"
The young officer glanced at Captain Wang and immediately rolled up the window, quickly reversing away.
It seemed they had stumbled into a bully village. They had surveillance equipment in their vehicle, and if discovered, the consequences would be dire. Fortunately, the young officer had undergone special training; even though the men ran fast, they couldn’t catch up with them.
"Captain, there probably aren’t any good people in this village! And that guy next to the big bearded man... I feel like I’ve seen him somewhere before."
"That’s right! He’s Cui Guangzhi, the human trafficker on the wanted list!"
With Captain Wang's reminder, the young officer immediately recognized the face—it was indeed that of a wanted criminal.
"Captain! What should we do next? Should we wait for others to take action?" The young officer was a bit excited; this was his first time participating in such a case since graduating from police academy.
"No need. You park the car somewhere discreet. We’ll take the mountain path into the village to scout out the situation."
The two of them slipped into the woods along a small path by the roadside, deliberately avoiding the hidden area where those men were located.
The mountain path was rugged, and the night brought significant obstacles to the two travelers. The Young Officer felt no fatigue; instead, a sense of mission surged within him, igniting his blood with fervor.
As they approached the village, it became evident that this place was anything but ordinary. From the mountains above, they could see patrols moving in every direction around the village. Captain Wang, experienced in handling cases, led the Young Officer in avoiding those patrols and stealthily infiltrated the village.
The village was small, consisting of only about ten households, and surprisingly, it was less guarded than the areas outside. Captain Wang furrowed his brow; if he was not mistaken, all the villagers were likely human traffickers. However, their immediate priority was to rescue Yu Songyu. These traffickers were ruthless and desperate; cornered animals could be dangerous.
Following their tracking device, they arrived at a dilapidated woodshed. Inside, Yu Songyu noticed that time was running short. To avoid worrying Aunt Wang, she was about to call out when she heard faint footsteps outside. Having had keen hearing since childhood, she detected even the lightest of sounds.
Yu Songyu heightened her vigilance, unaware of what kind of fate awaited her next.
