Li Xiuzhen had been running around with Yu Songyu lately, her mind becoming more carefree. As the sky darkened, she found herself disinterested in the Youth Commune. Instead, she decided to accompany Yu Songyu to Aunt Wang's house, which provided an excellent opportunity for Yu Songyu to show off Aunt Wang's craftsmanship.
"Look at how skilled Aunt Wang is! The stitching is so delicate, and the embroidery is beautiful, isn't it?" Li Xiuzhen exclaimed as she took a pillowcase sewn by Aunt Wang into her hands. The more she looked at it, the more she liked it. The pillowcase was adorned with vibrant flowers and birds, far more appealing than anything sold at the Supply and Marketing Cooperative.
"Aunt Wang, your skills are truly impressive! If you sold this in town, wouldn’t everyone be clamoring for it?" Li Xiuzhen remarked, recalling how frenzied the factory girls were when shopping.
"Well, if you like it so much, I can make one for you. But I’m out of fabric!" Aunt Wang said, noticing how much Li Xiuzhen admired the pillowcase. She thought it would be nice to make something for her since she had some free time on her hands.
"Really? Aunt Wang, I don’t need a pillowcase right now. Could you make me a crossbody bag instead? Just like the one Xiao Yu has!" Li Xiuzhen's excitement made her voice rise a bit too high, as if she were announcing something monumental.
She had been envious of the convenience of Xiao Yu's crossbody bag lately. In terms of style and practicality, it was far superior to the army green crossbody bags sold at the Supply and Marketing Cooperative.
"Sure, why not? Just remember to bring your own fabric!" Aunt Wang replied without hesitation, though she did wish she had suitable fabric at home.
"Don't worry, Aunt Wang! I'll go to town tomorrow to buy some!" Li Xiuzhen assured her.
"Alright then! Since you're friends with Xiao Yu, feel free to come over anytime; it's just like home here!" Aunt Wang welcomed her warmly.
When Aunt Wang first saw Li Xiuzhen, she thought she looked sturdy and healthy—a girl who would be good for childbearing. However, after getting to know her better, she realized that Li Xiuzhen was quite sincere and straightforward. Aunt Wang appreciated such genuine children; they brought a lively atmosphere to her home.
"Aunt Wang!"
The courtyard door was left open as Yang Qinghe called out and walked straight into the yard.
"Yang Qinghe is here!" Aunt Wang exclaimed upon hearing his voice. She quickly put on her shoes and went out to pour him a glass of water.
"Brother!"
Yu Songyu greeted before falling silent, focusing her attention on the embroidery patterns alongside Li Xiuzhen. Yang Qinghe placed the snacks he had just bought from the convenience store on a nearby chair, unsure of what to say next.
He was taken aback by Li Xiuzhen's demeanor; it was awkward for him to strike up a conversation with Xiao Yu, just like Wang Jianjun, who seemed oblivious to the situation.
"Why are you standing there? Sit down!" Aunt Wang placed a bowl of sweet soup in front of Yang Qinghe, immediately sensing his unease.
With nightfall approaching, her intention of bringing snacks was unmistakable. However, Li Xiuzhen's presence was indeed a bit of an obstacle. She felt it was her duty to help this young man out.
"Oh, it's already time for dinner! Li Xiuzhen, Aunt Wang hasn't prepared that much food today; I’m afraid we won't be able to host you properly. How about this: come over tomorrow, and Aunt Wang will make something delicious for you!"
Aunt Wang subtly hinted at their guest's departure.
"Okay then, Aunt Wang, I’ll take my leave!"
Li Xiuzhen exchanged a glance with Yu Songyu before putting on her shoes and heading out. Despite her usual clumsiness, she still had enough awareness to recognize the situation. With food supplies being scarce these days, she couldn’t just drop by someone’s house uninvited.
In fact, Yu Songyu was quite surprised by Aunt Wang's words; she knew Aunt Wang loved a lively atmosphere and wasn't stingy at all. Although she didn’t understand the exact reason behind Aunt Wang’s suggestion, she felt it was inappropriate to comment further since it was someone else's home.
"Alright then, you two continue chatting while Aunt Wang goes to cook!"
Once Li Xiuzhen left, Aunt Wang began preparing dinner. The food was already ready and only needed reheating, but she wanted to create more opportunities for the two young people to spend time together, so she lingered on the stool in front of the stove.
"I haven't seen you in a few days; Aunt Wang said you went to town?"
"Yes," Yu Songyu replied briefly, feeling no need to elaborate to Yang Qinghe.
"By the way, brother, just wait a moment!"
