Early in the morning, Yu Songyu slipped away under the pretense of visiting a friend's father, after greeting her grandmother. She checked her account and saw that the money from selling her shares through a lawyer had already been deposited.
First, she went to the supermarket to buy some snacks and fruits that Jie liked the most before heading to see her.
"Xiao Jie, how have you been feeling lately?"
At that moment, Jie was basking in the sun on the terrace. Hearing Yu Songyu's voice, she slowly turned her head.
"Xiao Yu, you’re here?"
Jie's complexion seemed better than before, but there was still a hint of weakness in her voice.
"Xiao Jie, do you want me to take you to see a doctor? Or maybe we could go out for a bit and clear our minds?"
When she first arrived, Yu Songyu had already heard from Jie's family that she was very resistant to going to the hospital and also opposed to psychological treatment.
"Xiao Yu, I don’t want to go! I’m not sick! I know my own body very well. And about my parents, you don’t have to hide it from me; I already know everything!"
When Jie said this, her tone was calm, indicating that everything was unfolding as expected.
"Do you know? Chen Luzhi's family is haunted. Her mother was scared into a vegetative state. After her father went crazy, he became estranged from everyone. People saw him rummaging through trash bins on the street and even got beaten up! Truly, good deeds are rewarded and evil deeds are punished!"
After saying this, a faint, long-lost smile appeared on Jie's face.
Suddenly, her expression changed drastically.
But I wonder why that Chen Luzhi has gone missing?
Yu Songyu took her hand, seemingly trying to convey some strength to her.
"Xiao Jie, Chen Luzhi is dead!"
Jie turned her head, staring intently at Yu Songyu with an expression that showed no surprise whatsoever.
"How did she die? Was it a terrible death?"
She was hit by a motorcycle and dumped in Cambodia—the same place where we were caught last time.
"Hit by a motorcycle? Doesn’t that mean there’s still a chance for survival?"
There’s no chance left; her internal organs were damaged. In that ruthless place where people devour others without blinking an eye, she had no opportunity to escape and certainly no one would be there to treat her!
After hearing all this, Jie suddenly burst into laughter; her laughter was deafening.
As she laughed, tears began to flow uncontrollably down her cheeks.
Yu Songyu sat beside her, pulling her into an embrace. The two of them held each other tightly, unaware of how long they had been crying.
"Xiao Yu, didn't you notice that I never doubted what you said?" She wiped her tears and looked at Yu Songyu with a serious expression.
At her words, Yu Songyu's heart skipped a beat. Could it be...
Since returning from Cambodia, she often wondered if they were truly rescued. She clearly remembered that they had both attempted to take their own lives together. Although she had been unconscious, she still retained some awareness. It felt eerily quiet around her; someone was helping to clean her body, and then she was taken away in an ambulance to the hospital.
And what about the matters at Chen Luzhi's home, including Chen Luzhi's death? It couldn't just be a simple coincidence, could it? "If you don't want to talk about it, that's fine. But remember, I consider you my closest friend in this life, and I will only believe in you!"
She smiled at Yu Songyu, genuinely appreciating the bond they shared.
Yu Songyu felt a tightness in her throat. She didn't know whether she should let Jie know about the possibility of traversing eras. If she revealed it, would she ever be able to return to that era? Would she never see Yang Qinghe again? She couldn't take that risk!
But the person before her was her dearest friend since childhood and the only one she cared about in this modern world.
