Yu Songyu rummaged through her crossbody bag and pulled out the shopping list.
"Is this really what they asked you to buy? It doesn’t seem that special. Are supplies really that tight over there?"
"Yes, they are. Many items need to be purchased with tickets," she replied.
"That's fine! If you're busy in the future and can't get away, I can help you with the shopping!"
Bai Jie was quite interested in these things; after all, not everyone could come across such opportunities. The two of them found something to eat casually for lunch and then switched into shopping mode in the afternoon.
They bought gloves, grains, oils, various meats including chicken, duck, fish, and plenty of beef and lamb. Whenever they found a chance to slip away to a secluded spot, they stored all these items in their space.
"Buying so much fresh meat will spoil if we can't sell it, right?" Xiao Yu asked.
"No, I forgot to tell you! Once items are placed in the space, they maintain their original state and won't rot or mold!"
"Oh, that's great! I can’t wait for the day when we become little rich ladies!"
Bai Jie laughed heartily, almost shaking off the gloom that had been hanging over her.
Seeing her like this made Yu Songyu happy as well, and she started teasing her. "If no one wants you in the future, don’t worry; I can take care of you!"
"Who says no one wants me? I have plenty of admirers! Just because you have a boyfriend doesn’t make you special! What’s his name again? Yang something? I want to see if he’s as handsome as you say!"
Yu Songyu didn’t want to continue the conversation and pulled her into the car.
They arrived at the local clothing wholesale market, one of the top ten wholesale markets in the country. The styles here were trendy and updated quickly. However, it was a mixed bag; the quality of clothing varied greatly.
Most high-end fashion on the market came from here. However, during this era, people favored understated and simple clothing with single colors, mainly seeking comfort and naturalness.
Although the styles here changed rapidly, they were not suitable for selling in this era. As time passed, hippie style, rock style, and street style gradually became popular. People began to pursue new trends in fashion, with colors becoming more vibrant and diverse.
This was a glorious time for Hong Kong's cultural industry; major film studios emerged and produced many quality films. Hong Kong Style also began to gain popularity on the mainland.
Yu Songyu wondered if a batch of Hong Kong Style and Retro Style clothing would be accepted by the public. After all, she had been ahead of the trends for many years. However, once she arrived at the market, her hesitation faded; these clothes were simply too appealing.
Retro shirts, denim jackets, flared jeans, headbands, large earrings, large necklaces, and sunglasses—everything was bold and artistic, with vibrant colors that stood out. The two of them were dazzled by the array of choices and spent money without restraint. Yet, a sliver of rationality remained; although they bought a lot of styles, they didn’t purchase many pieces of each.
After an afternoon of shopping, both felt sore and exhausted. Yu Songyu thought that this shopping trip was more tiring than earning work points. However, they had gathered quite a haul, managing to check off most items on their shopping list.
With two days left until the house payment was due, Yu Songyu needed to sell her chickens, ducks, fish, meat, rice, flour, and oil quickly to convert them into cash. Unfortunately, these items couldn’t be traded openly; it seemed she would have to find a way to navigate the black market.
After organizing her space overnight, Yu Songyu set out early the next morning with a bamboo basket in search of the so-called black market. She had learned about its location by giving someone a pound of pork as payment.
The street was hidden and narrow, with only a few people standing sparsely along either side. Yu Songyu began to doubt whether she had been tricked or if she had arrived too early; with so few people around, it hardly seemed like a place for trading goods.
The individuals on either side scrutinized her closely, making her feel uneasy under their gaze. She hurriedly moved forward. After turning another corner, she discovered an alley where a considerable number of people had gathered.
Following their example, Yu Songyu found a corner to set her basket down beside her feet.
“Miss, what are you selling in that basket?”
Yu Songyu froze for a moment; she had covered her head and face with a scarf. How could he still tell she was a girl?
