"Oh, what are you planning to do?"
"Of course, I want Hu Hai's wife to find it herself. That way..."
"Oh, if this letter is seen by Hu Hai's daughter-in-law..."
The two exchanged a sly smile, their expressions rather lewd.
As they thought of this, they linked arms and headed towards Wang Widow's house.
"Aunt Wang's place, right?"
Yu Songyu was holding a bag of sweet potato flour and called out sweetly at Wang Widow's door.
"Who is it? This Da Qing is really relentless!"
Wang Widow walked out of the house with an annoyed expression and saw Yu Songyu and Xu Zhuzhen standing at her gate with cheerful smiles.
"Oh, isn't this Yu Zhiqing and Xu Zhiqing? What’s up?"
Wang Widow's house had no men around, and since Yu Songyu couldn't earn any money from the villagers fishing, she wasn't particularly polite.
"Aunt Wang, I want to gather another batch of fish, but this time the people have some requests. Could you please gather everyone at the village entrance by the Big Huai Tree? I’ll say a few words! This is for you—a big bag of sweet potato flour!"
At first, Wang Widow seemed indifferent to what was being said. However, upon hearing that the sweet potato flour was for her, her expression changed instantly.
"Oh my, you’ve come to the right person! Just let me change my clothes!"
Wang Widow snatched the sweet potato flour from Yu Songyu's hands and wiggled her way back inside.
Yu Songyu and Xu Zhuzhen exchanged another knowing smile as they waited under the Big Huai Tree at the village entrance.
Since the villagers had made money from selling fish last time, everyone was more enthusiastic this time around.
Of course, among those present were Hu Hai and his daughter-in-law Zhao Chunhua.
Seeing that most people had arrived, Yu Songyu gave Xu Zhuzhen a signal. Xu Zhuzhen quietly slipped into the crowd and approached Hu Hai and his wife, intentionally leaving Wang Xiuli's bag slightly open to reveal part of a letter before tossing it at Hu Hai's feet.
"Now that everyone is here, I’d like to say a few words..."
Before Yu Songyu could finish her sentence, someone in the crowd shouted out.
"Hey? Whose bag is this? Did someone drop their bag?"
A woman shouted, pointing at Hu Hai's feet. The crowd's attention was drawn, and they all turned to look at Hu Hai.
Hu Hai's Daughter-in-law was known for being opportunistic and was infamous in the eighteen villages as the Old Woman. If any chicken happened to wander past her door, she would take it without a second thought. She bent down and picked up a backpack from the ground.
"This is mine!" Zhao Chunhua exclaimed, hugging the bag tightly, her tone defiant.
"Just because you say it's yours doesn't make it so! When have you ever used a crossbody bag? Clearly, it's someone else's—probably belonging to that Zhiqing girl—and you're trying to claim it!"
Someone in the crowd shouted this, and others quickly chimed in.
"Yeah, if it's yours, tell us what's inside!"
"Right? Is it from Yu Zhiqing or someone else we know?"
"I don’t care; if no one claims it, then it’s mine! You all should stop making a fuss!"
Few villagers were willing to confront her and her husband; not only would they miss out on lamb meat, but they also risked attracting trouble. Yu Songyu noticed that a piece of letter paper was sticking out of the bag, now tightly held by Zhao Chunhua.
"Alright, everyone calm down. I saw that bag had a letter sticking out; let’s find someone who can read it and see who it belongs to," he suggested.
"Yes, I saw that too! Little Accountant, you can read; come take a look!"
The Little Accountant was the son of the village Accountant; he had been to school and could read.
"Zhao Chunhua, why don’t you take out the bag and let the Little Accountant have a look?"
At this point, a large group began to stir up trouble. Faced with their insistence, Zhao Chunhua reluctantly handed over the bag.
