"Don't go!"
Yu Songyu reached out to grab him, but it was in vain. Tears streamed down her cheeks, and she couldn't express the sense of loss and sadness that overwhelmed her.
"Ah, you're awake! Come eat!" Xiao Yu called out cheerfully.
Wang Xiujuan heard sounds coming from Yu Songyu's room and hurried over to check. As soon as she opened the door, she saw her daughter with tears in her eyes, looking utterly dejected.
"What's wrong, Xiao Yu? Did you have a nightmare? If something's bothering you, tell Mom. Don't keep it inside!"
Mother Yu's heart ached at the sight of her daughter's distress; as a mother, seeing her child sad felt like a thousand needles piercing her heart.
"Mom, I'm fine. I just miss you!"
Yu Songyu could no longer hold back her tears and threw herself into Wang Xiujuan's arms, sobbing uncontrollably. She poured out all the grievances she had endured over the years in this modern world.
"Good girl, don't cry!"
Wang Xiujuan held Yu Songyu tightly, crying along with her daughter. Although she didn't know why Yu Songyu was so heartbroken, she could feel her pain.
After what felt like an eternity of crying, Yu Songyu finally vented enough to feel a bit lighter inside. She lifted her head only to find her father standing at the doorway with a spatula and Gu Ting holding bowls and chopsticks. Both looked utterly bewildered as they stared at her.
Oh no, is this what social death feels like?
At that moment, Yu Songyu just wanted to find a crack in the ground to hide in. She wished she could retreat to her space for some calm!
Unfortunately, if she were to disappear right now, it would surely frighten everyone to death.
She could only feign calmness, wiping away her tears and smoothing down her messy hair.
"Ahem, I—I just missed my mom!"
"Right, it's nothing serious! Xiao Yu, don't be embarrassed; there are no outsiders here. Besides, Ting Ge has seen you when you were little, right? He won't laugh at you!"
Yu Ba quickly tried to ease his daughter's embarrassment, but unfortunately, his words only made Yu Songyu feel even more awkward.
"Let's eat!"
Gu Ting quickly regained his composure, believing that the best way to break the awkwardness was to simply ignore it.
"Yes, yes, let's eat! Xiao Yu, your mom made all your favorites!"
At the dining table, Yu Songyu deliberately shared many amusing stories to cover up the awkwardness, transforming into a lively spirit that kept everyone laughing.
Gu Ting found himself lost in thought as he gazed at the cheerful girl in front of him. It seemed as if she was surrounded by a warm glow, and that sweet, comforting feeling drew him closer to her.
After dinner, Gu Ting accompanied Yu Ba for a game of chess while Yu Songyu helped her mother clear the dishes in the kitchen.
"Mom, is my older brother and Yu Songbai not coming back for the New Year?"
"Your older brother has a mission and said he won't be back. As for Yu Songbai, he should be on leave and will probably return in a couple of days."
Yu Songyu didn't have many memories of her two brothers because they rarely played with her when she was little. Her eldest brother, Yu Qingsong, had joined the army early on and still cared deeply for his little sister. Ever since he learned that she was going to Shigou Village as a Zhiqing, he sent money and tickets every month, proving to be a very good brother.
Yu Songbai also joined the army but stayed at home for a few more years. When they were young, he was particularly mischievous and often bullied Yu Songyu. Although they were of similar ages, they never quite played together. Yu Songyu was not one to suffer in silence; every time Yu Songbai picked on her, she would retaliate fiercely.
