A month later, Li Xiuzhen was finally able to be discharged from the hospital. Perhaps due to the lack of sunlight, her complexion had noticeably lightened, and her skin felt softer than before.
During this month, everyone had been busy taking care of her. The two Old Ladies had made her chicken soup countless times, and Yang Qinghe, unwilling to let Yu Songyu stay up all night alone, accompanied her each time.
Although taking care of a patient was hard work, Wang Jianjun enjoyed decent meals. After all, the soup was for Li Xiuzhen, while he got to eat the meat himself. So over the course of the month, he not only didn’t lose weight but had actually become quite a bit sturdier.
One early morning, Yu Songyu called a few Female Educated Youths to go to the hospital to pick her up.
"What is this? I’m not wearing that! What do you mean it’s red? I can’t go out in that!"
The Female Educated Youths smeared her face with makeup, and Li Xiuzhen protested vehemently.
"What do you know? This is a custom from our hometown; it’s meant to ward off bad luck! You have to wear red! It’ll help you avoid misfortune in the future!"
Yu Songyu was getting better at spinning tales; she spoke so confidently that her heart didn’t race at all.
"Is that true?"
Li Xiuzhen was skeptical; after all, they didn’t have such customs in her hometown.
"Of course! Why would I lie to you? Hurry up and let Man Yue comb your hair; it’s a mess!"
Yu Songyu pretended to be impatient while secretly feeling pleased.
This was a surprise that everyone had prepared for her. The room she would be staying in had been fitted with new bedding by the Two Grandmothers. Besides the various cabinets that Yu Songyu had asked Song Yu to custom-make, everything else had been discussed and arranged with Yang Qinghe.
"Why are you all here?"
At the hospital entrance, a row of bicycles was neatly lined up, each adorned with red cloth. Wang Jianjun rode one of them, with a large red flower hanging from the front.
"Let’s go!"
Wang Jianjun tilted his head, signaling for Li Xiuzhen to get on, his movements looking quite dashing.
Surrounded by everyone’s enthusiasm, Li Xiuzhen pushed open the hospital door.
But what lay before her made tears stream down her face in an instant.
"You guys..."
Li Xiuzhen's voice trembled as she struggled to believe what she saw.
In the courtyard, several large tables were set up, each surrounded by villagers. The tables were covered with red cloth, adorned with dishes of meat and vegetables, along with cigarettes, alcohol, and sugar cubes.
"Congratulations on your wedding!"
As she opened the door, everyone spontaneously stood up to applaud them.
"Xiao Yu, you—"
"Alright, alright, if you keep this up, your makeup will get ruined. Hurry inside!"
Yu Songyu took out a handkerchief to wipe her tears and gently pushed her into the courtyard.
"How about the groom sings a song for everyone? What do you all think?"
Wang Zhaoran, acting as the wedding host, suggested that the newlyweds perform for the guests.
"Sure!"
"Sing! Sing!"
The courtyard was filled with cheers from men and women of all ages.
"Hahaha, I'll sing! The social justice is good, the social justice is good, the social justice gives high status to the people of the country!"
Wang Jianjun's face turned bright red, but he steeled himself and started singing. Fortunately, since he took the lead, everyone else joined in, making it less awkward.
"Great! Now let's have the bride and groom drink a cup of wine together!"
Unexpectedly, Wang Zhaoran knew how to stir things up; as soon as he said that, the atmosphere became even more lively!
The two were eventually encouraged to kiss, while adults covered the children's eyes to shield them from seeing.
Before the wedding banquet ended, Yu Songyu accompanied Li Xiuzhen inside to rest. Although she had recovered well physically, she had just been discharged from the hospital and still needed some proper rest.
"Here you go!"
Yu Songyu pulled out a small rectangular box from her bag and handed it to Li Xiuzhen.
"What is this?"
