The next morning, Yu Songyu was awakened by the crowing of a rooster. This rooster, originally bought for the New Year feast, seemed quite dedicated to its role.
Pushing open the door, a gust of cold wind accompanied by snow rushed in. Yu Songyu shivered and quickly closed the door, retreating inside to put on more clothes.
Before long, there was a knock at the door.
"Yu, are you awake?"
It was Wang Zhaoran's voice, easily recognizable.
"Yes, come in!"
Upon hearing her response, Wang Zhaoran entered with a food box in hand.
"Here, it's time to eat!"
Yu Songyu had planned to get her own breakfast but was pleasantly surprised that Wang Zhaoran had brought it to her instead.
"Why did you bring me breakfast? I could have gotten it myself; I feel like a spoiled young lady now!" she chuckled, covering her mouth.
"It's too cold outside," Wang Zhaoran replied. "I was worried you might catch a cold with the temperature fluctuations."
He took out the breakfast from the box and neatly arranged it on the table. There was millet porridge, pickled vegetables, and homemade Sauerkraut Pork Dumplings made by his grandmother.
As Wang Zhaoran collected the food box and turned to leave, Yu Songyu called out to him.
"Hey, what are you doing? Come over and eat with me!"
With so much food, Yu Songyu knew she couldn't finish it all by herself, and taking leftovers back would be a hassle. She got up and grabbed a bowl, pouring half of the millet porridge for Wang Zhaoran.
The two of them ate together while chatting away, creating a serene atmosphere.
"The snow last night was quite heavy—over ten centimeters! This morning, I could barely push the door open!" Yu Songyu thought to herself. The snow would help cover up any traces of her rescue efforts.
"Really? Then we can build a snowman in the yard later!" Wang Zhaoran exclaimed excitedly.
"Building a snowman?"
"Yes! And later, I’ll find some red paper to give the snowman a colorful nose! Just imagine all those little snowmen scattered around the yard, how adorable they would be!"
"I'll follow your lead!"
Wang Zhaoran watched Yu Songyu as she spoke, her eyes sparkling with excitement and a smile full of affection.
"By the way, something happened last night!"
Hearing Wang Zhaoran's words, Yu Songyu paused with her chopsticks.
"What happened?"
"I heard that Zheng Zhiqing was rescued! The chains were smashed apart! Those chains have been around since the old days in the village; they were incredibly sturdy, yet someone managed to break them into two pieces!"
As Wang Zhaoran spoke, his gaze remained fixed on Yu Songyu's face. He had already heard that a Female Educated Youth had come to find her last night, asking for help to rescue Zheng Chengxiu.
When he arrived, the door to the room where Zheng Chengxiu was held was wide open, and there was no one inside.
If it was Yu Songyu who rescued him, could she really have broken those chains all by herself? After breaking the chains, where did she take him? It seemed a bit far-fetched!
Moreover, there were very few people in the village willing to help Zheng Chengxiu; if it wasn’t her, then who else could it be?
And there was also the matter of the supplies from the Supply and Marketing Cooperative; every time, she insisted on picking them up from the small courtyard herself.
But others might not know, yet he certainly did. He had never seen anyone deliver goods to that small courtyard!
Just because he didn’t ask didn’t mean he didn’t have doubts. Could it be that this girl had some sort of superpower?
"When I rushed over last night, he was still there! But I was completely powerless. I stayed outside for so long just trying to think of a way to save him; I thought it would help me stay calm."
As Yu Songyu spoke more and more nervously, she quickly changed the subject.
"I can't believe he was actually rescued; that's amazing!"
After saying this, she hurriedly lowered her head to drink her porridge.
"Yes, being rescued means we can breathe easier!"
Regardless of whether or not Yu Songyu was involved in this matter, Wang Zhaoran certainly wouldn’t bring it up.
