"Tell me, whose children are you? It's late at night, and instead of being honest and sleeping at home, you're out here playing tricks? I should tell your parents so they can teach you a lesson!"
Wang Zhaoran was only trying to scare them; he really couldn't be bothered to get involved further.
"Who do you think you are? Just because you give me a little food doesn't mean I'll listen to you!"
The boy got up from the ground, brushing his long hair aside with both hands. He looked as dirty as Xiao Wa, making it hard to tell what he looked like.
"Damn it, who do you think you're talking to?"
Wang Zhaoran slapped the back of the boy's head without hesitation, nearly stunning him.
"Brother, look! We have something to eat!"
Xiao Wa raised his small black hand, opening his palm to reveal a few pieces of candy.
"What is this? It’s not poison, is it?"
The boy was a few years older than Xiao Wa and had more cunning in him.
"It's not poison; it's candy! Just peel off the wrapper and eat!"
Yu Suihuan saw that he still didn't understand and stepped forward to help them peel two pieces, placing them in Xiao Wa's hand.
"Brother, you eat! It's really sweet!"
Xiao Wa's eyes lit up, and his muddy little face broke into an innocent smile.
"If my brother won't eat, then you go ahead!"
The boy swallowed hard and turned his head away on purpose, pretending not to look.
"What are you doing out here so late? Aren't you afraid?"
Yu Suihuan repeated Wang Zhaoran's question.
"I have no home, so what's there to be afraid of? People are scarier than ghosts!"
Surprisingly, the little boy spoke with a certain wisdom.
"Well, you could at least find a straw hut or something. Why are you just sitting here by the roadside? Don't you see all those graves around?"
"There’s sometimes food in front of the graves!"
Xiao Wa answered in a sweet voice while looking at Yu Suihuan.
Yu Suihuan finally understood. The food they mentioned must be the offerings left at the graves by occasional visitors. She looked at the two children with sympathy, feeling a wave of sorrow wash over her.
"Are your parents dead?"
Wang Zhaoran's heart softened as he saw them, reminding him of his own childhood.
"My dad didn't die," one of the boys said. "My mom made my dad kill her, and then just left her by the Luanzanggang near Shan Bei! My dad married another woman who makes us work all day without feeding us, and she lets my dad hit us. They even tried to strangle us with a rope! Even the son of my stepmother hits us every day!"
Xiao Wa spoke as if recounting someone else's story, his face showing no trace of sadness.
"Dog Egg!"
The other boy snapped at Xiao Wa, seemingly not wanting him to say so much.
"Brother, what's wrong?"
Being just a child, his mind was still immature, but he had one principle: to listen to his older brother.
"Let's go!"
"Oh!"
Xiao Wa lowered his head, tugging at the hem of the younger boy's shirt, ready to leave with him.
"Hey, wait! Where are you planning to go?"
Yu Suihuan stopped them. Their feet were bare, without even a pair of shoes; they looked truly pitiful.
"You don't need to worry about it!"
The younger boy shot Yu Suihuan a glare. What did it matter if this woman was pretty? Being pretty didn't put food on the table, so why should he answer her?
"Who says I don’t need to worry? You can go wherever you want. But Xiao Wa just called me 'dad,' so I have to care! Do you know what 'dad' means? It means father!"
Wang Zhaoran felt sympathy for their plight, knowing that life wouldn't be easy for the two children. His heart ached for them. He stepped forward and grabbed Xiao Wa's arm, pulling him toward himself.
The younger boy immediately turned around and grabbed Xiao Wa's other arm, refusing to let him leave his side.
