Lin Ning and Yuan Yueming trudged through the Changbai Mountain for several days, finally emerging from the towering range. On this day, they arrived at a small town and decided to treat themselves to a hearty lunch at a tavern to reward their hard work. Just as they were enjoying their meal, the tavern door was suddenly flung open, and several soldiers from Later Jin filed in. The leader of the group was a short man, barely five feet tall, with a sallow complexion and an extremely unattractive face. His sharp features and a black mole beneath his left eye made him appear repulsive. The moment Lin Ning laid eyes on this soldier, he froze in shock. The man's appearance was strikingly similar to Chen Tao, the person who had caused the death of his parents, as described by Xiong Yanbi! Lin Ning's heart raced with excitement; could this be the enemy he had been desperately seeking?
As Lin Ning pondered this, the soldier barked, "Innkeeper, bring me all your best food and drink!" His voice was thick with a Shaanxi accent, sending a jolt through Lin Ning's body as he tensed up.
Lin Ning's conviction grew stronger; this man must be Chen Tao, the one responsible for his parents' deaths! Anger surged within him, threatening to ignite the entire tavern. The innkeeper hurried over with a forced smile, saying, "Captain Chen, please wait a moment; the food and drink will be right out!" Upon hearing the innkeeper refer to him as "Captain Chen," Lin Ning's last shred of doubt vanished. His eyes blazed with fury as he fixed his gaze on the soldier, gripping the Sunlight Blade tightly on the table, ready to plunge it into his enemy's body at any moment.
The flames of hatred burned fiercely in Lin Ning's heart; his eyes turned bloodshot, teeth clenched tightly as every muscle in his body tensed with rage. He felt as if he could burn everything around him to ashes. His hands unconsciously formed fists, knuckles turning white from the strain. He glanced at the Sunlight Blade beside him, determination filling his gaze. This blade had accompanied him through countless hardships; now it would become the weapon of his revenge. Slowly reaching for the cold hilt, it felt like he was grasping the reins of fate itself. The blade glimmered ominously in the dim light, reflecting his icy yet resolute heart. "Chen Tao, today is your day of reckoning!" Lin Ning whispered fiercely, though his voice was low, it was filled with boundless hatred. He stepped forward toward Chen Tao with steady and powerful strides, driven by an unwavering resolve.
The soldier looked at Lin Ning in confusion and hurriedly asked, "Who are you? How do you know my name?" Lin Ning gritted his teeth and replied slowly, "You may not recognize me, but I would know you even if you turned to ash. You owe me my parents' lives!" Chen Tao stammered in disbelief, "What nonsense are you spouting? Who are your parents? When did I ever harm them?"
Lin Ning's anger flared as he declared, "My father is Yu Jiangong; my mother is Han Ying! Do you dare deny that you were responsible for their deaths?" Upon hearing that Lin Ning was the son of Yu Jiangong and Han Ying, Chen Tao broke into a cold sweat. The events from twenty years ago were as vivid as yesterday to him; however, he steadied himself and replied defiantly, "Your parents were killed by Nurhaci's men; it has nothing to do with me!"
Lin Ning retorted angrily, "You still dare to quibble! If it weren't for your false messages to my parents back then, how could they have fallen into Later Jin's trap and met their demise?" Realizing that his deceit had been uncovered, Chen Tao gritted his teeth and said defiantly, "So what if I did?"
In a flash of fury, Lin Ning swung his knife toward Chen Tao. The soldiers beside Chen Tao immediately drew their swords to block him. In an instant, chaos erupted in the tavern as blades clashed and tables flew. Lin Ning was skilled in combat; wielding the Sunlight Blade with ferocity made it difficult for the soldiers to approach him despite their numbers. Yuan Yueming also drew his sword and joined the fray to assist Lin Ning against the soldiers.
Taking advantage of the chaos to escape, Chen Tao attempted to flee but was quickly spotted by Lin Ning. With a loud shout, Lin Ning leaped over several soldiers in pursuit of Chen Tao. In a panic-stricken dash out of the tavern, Chen Tao collided head-on with a crowd of townsfolk. Lin Ning relentlessly pursued him and was closing in when suddenly horse hooves thundered from afar—an entire squadron of Later Jin cavalry galloped toward them. The leading officer shouted loudly, "Stop!"
Lin Ning halted in his tracks and eyed the cavalry warily. The officer looked at Lin Ning and said sternly, "If you kill him now, you will be making an enemy of Later Jin. Why not come back with us to camp so we can clarify this matter?"
Lin Ning thought that if Chen Tao escaped back to camp now, it would be difficult for him to kill him later. Without hesitation, he declared firmly, "This man has killed my father; today I must avenge him!" With that said, Lin Ning charged once more toward Chen Tao.
Seeing this unfold before him, the officer waved his spear commandingly; immediately surrounding Lin Ning and Yuan Yueming were armed cavalrymen brandishing their gleaming spears. With them encircled in a precarious situation at the center of it all, Lin Ning tightened his grip on Sunlight Blade with unwavering resolve while Yuan Yueming stood back-to-back with him ready for battle.
Just then someone from within the crowd shouted out: "This Chen Tao is nothing but a traitor seeking glory; he deserves death for what he did to this young man's parents!" The crowd murmured in agreement upon hearing this. The officer frowned slightly as doubt crept into his mind.
Seizing this opportunity, Lin Ning shouted loudly: "General! What use is there in keeping such a villain alive? If you allow me to take down this scoundrel today, I will be eternally grateful." After pondering for a moment longer, the officer finally ordered a path be cleared.
Overjoyed by this turn of events, Lin Ning dashed toward Chen Tao. Terrified and collapsing onto the ground in fear, Chen Tao met his end as Lin Ning struck down upon him with swift precision.
After dealing with Chen Tao, Lin Ning bowed gratefully toward the officer before departing alongside Yuan Yueming under the watchful eyes of many townsfolk.
Yuan Yueming remarked cheerfully: "Brother! Congratulations on avenging your great grievance! Where shall we go next?"
Lin Ning replied: "I must return to Jinling to pay respects at my parents' graves and comfort their spirits before visiting my lovely nieces Bai Ruyun and Bai Ruoshui...”
Yuan Yueming’s eyes lit up as he said: “May I accompany you to Jinling? I have missed those two little girls dearly!”
Lin Ning nodded happily: “That would be wonderful! With your company along the way it will surely be more lively.”
The two packed their belongings and set off toward Jinling together. Along their journey they enjoyed scenic views while helping many townsfolk along the way.
Finally arriving at Jinling together with Yuan Yueming by his side at last brought Lin Ning before his parents’ gravesite where he laid offerings down while lighting incense and bowing deeply filled with longing: “Father! Mother! Your son has avenged your deaths; I have come today to comfort your spirits.”
Yuan Yueming stood quietly beside him paying silent tribute as well.
