As she exited the police station after finishing her statement, the sky had gradually darkened, enveloping the surroundings in twilight.
Jin Zisu glanced at her worn wristwatch, mentally calculating the last bus departure time.
To her dismay, she realized she would have to walk a station to catch the subway in order to make it back to her home in the remote suburbs.
At that moment, her poor stomach betrayed her by rumbling loudly.
It seemed that paying that officer with the surname Si a thousand yuan was indeed… a loss.
Jin Zisu pouted, helplessly pressing on her churning stomach as she headed toward the subway station.
Under the dim glow of the streetlights, her slender figure moved slowly, appearing particularly small.
Si Yin watched her elongated shadow stretch out beneath the light and felt a sudden pang of sympathy. He gradually brought his car to a stop beside her and honked the horn.
Jin Zisu glanced at the understated yet luxurious silver-gray SUV, a sarcastic smile tugging at her lips. “Is the salary and benefits for detectives in this city really that good? It seems we taxpayers are doing our part.”
“Miss Jin, this car is my personal property,” Si Yin replied curtly.
With their conversation going nowhere, Jin Zisu chose not to engage further. She huffed dismissively and walked past the vehicle.
“The distance from the police station to your home is too far. Let me give you a ride.” Although Si Yin was somewhat displeased with her attitude, he still felt it was unsafe for a girl to head home alone after dark.
"I can't afford the fare for this ride," Jin Zisu said, adjusting the straps of her backpack and walking toward the subway station without looking back.
Si Yin was momentarily stunned, nearly choking on her own breath. Did she really think of herself as a taxi driver making extra cash on the side?
"In appreciation of your cooperation with our police work and for the safety of the complainant, I'll give you a ride," Si Yin offered again, pulling the car up beside her. Her tone softened as she secretly admired her own patience; she had to admit... it was a well-chosen name.
Jin Zisu raised an eyebrow and asked a question that left Si Yin baffled: "Do I have a hot figure?"
Si Yin was taken aback by this nonsensical question. "Um... Sorry, I haven't noticed that for now."
While her response might have seemed impolite, from an honest perspective and through a man's eyes, her malnourished frame, thin as a skeleton, certainly did not align with the term "hot."
Jin Zisu's gaze shifted. "Or is it that I look particularly good?"
Si Yin almost spat out blood. Had this young lady suddenly lost her mind? Was she possessed by something?
She glanced at the pale face illuminated by the dim light, hearing her own dry response: "Well... it's okay... I guess." That was the least hurtful answer she could come up with.
Just as Si Yin was busy reflecting on the situation, the green light turned on.
Caught off guard by the change in traffic lights, she felt the car lurch violently. Jin Zisu, who wasn't wearing her seatbelt in the passenger seat, slammed into the windshield.
Realizing that her car had been rear-ended, Si Yin muttered a curse under her breath and quickly bent down to check on Jin Zisu's injuries.
Since she wasn't wearing a seatbelt, Jin Zisu was hurt quite badly. The impact had been severe, causing even the windshield to develop cracks. Blood streamed down her smooth forehead, a shocking sight.
"Miss Jin?!" She looked in a dire state, and Si Yin didn't even dare to reach out and touch her.
Jin Zisu struggled to open her eyes, which were nearly obscured by blood. Her voice was weak but filled with resentment. "If I had known... I wouldn't have gotten into your junky car... The hospital... so expensive..."
