When Jin Zisu heard the figure of five thousand a day, her eyes instantly sparkled like two little stars, and she seemed to perk up considerably, as if all her previous fatigue and pain had vanished in an instant.
Si Yin couldn't help but find this small detail amusing; it seemed that, for Jin Zisu, money was far more effective than any miraculous remedy.
"Are you hungry?" Si Yin asked as he watched her carefully tuck her bag under the pillow.
"Not really hungry, just really thirsty..." Jin Zisu licked her dry lips, her brow slightly furrowed.
"The doctor said that this medication will make you feel very thirsty; it's a normal reaction," Si Yin explained, handing her a glass of water and kindly helping her sit up straight.
"Aren't you supposed to be solving a case?" Jin Zisu looked at him curiously, confusion evident in her eyes. Shouldn't a detective be busy? Why was he here playing the role of a caretaker?
"I can't reach your family. I can't just leave you here alone," Si Yin patiently explained. After all, it was his driving mistake that had caused her injury. "Besides, we've already extracted usable fingerprints from the weapon found near the crime scene. We're currently conducting a suspect search, so it's fine if I go later. By the way, why don't you have any contacts in your phone? I wanted to notify someone to take care of you, but I couldn't find any phone numbers..."
"I don't have family or friends," Jin Zisu's gaze dimmed as she lowered her head, her voice becoming somewhat subdued.
She let her long eyelashes droop as she stared blankly at the water in the cup. Ever since her mother passed away from overwork, she had no one she could call family. As for friends... She had devoted all her thoughts and time to making money since childhood and had never had the energy to build friendships.
"Are you okay?" Si Yin couldn't help but ask as he noticed her staring blankly at the paper cup with a forlorn expression.
Jin Zisu was startled by his voice, causing her to fumble and spill water all over the place.
She gasped, frantically trying to wipe the water off her blanket and clothes.
Si Yin shook his head helplessly, helping her down from the bed and guiding her to another hospital bed. He then took out a handkerchief and carefully wiped the moisture from her arms.
"Hey, my handkerchief?" Jin Zisu said, taking it with a puzzled look. "Isn't it dirty now?"
"Cough—" Si Yin cleared his throat, pretending he hadn't heard her question.
As if he would tell her that he had bleached it overnight and soaked it in disinfectant.
For Si Yin, doing something like this for a girl felt… incredibly foolish.
Yet, inexplicably, he found himself doing something so silly.
Jin Zisu didn't pay attention to his conflicted expression; instead, she spread the handkerchief out on the small table where sunlight streamed in, mumbling to herself, "The weather is really nice today."
"Do you want to go for a walk?" Si Yin suggested, thinking that the sunlight outside was indeed pleasant.
The two quickly reached a consensus.
Just as Si Yin was lifting Jin Zisu into the wheelchair, preparing to take her out for a walk, an unexpected visitor stood at the door.
"Boss."
Ye Sha looked at Si Yin with a stern expression. "There’s been progress in the case. The director sent me to bring you back to work."
"I already requested leave from the director, didn’t I?" Si Yin frowned as he settled Jin Zisu into the wheelchair, then straightened up to look down at Ye Sha.
"Because a complete and clear fingerprint was found on the murder weapon at the crime scene. It needs to be compared with several suspects. Once we have results, the director has ordered you to interrogate the perpetrator immediately."
