After dealing with the embarrassing incident of her nosebleed, the moon had already climbed to the treetops.
When He Yin arrived at the study, it was eerily quiet and completely empty. Her curiosity piqued; after all, the study was an extremely important place, and she might find clues related to her mission.
He Yin began to search through the shelves, running her fingers along the spines of the books. Suddenly, when her hand brushed against something protruding, darkness enveloped her.
Before she could see who had approached, her mouth was covered, and she was swiftly thrown into a burlap sack. The next moment, she found herself hoisted over someone's shoulder and carried away.
When He Yin opened her eyes again, she realized that her surroundings had changed.
She let out a long breath but immediately felt a sharp blade pressed against her neck. A masked figure in black spoke coldly, “Tell me, where is the Imperial Jade Seal?”
“The Imperial Jade Seal was taken by the Chancellor,” He Yin quickly replied.
“The one he took is a fake.”
The figure scoffed and pressed the knife harder against He Yin's neck. “Are you going to talk or not? That Rebel's study never allows outsiders in, and you are just an unidentified suspect who stole the Imperial Jade Seal!”
“You... you are the one who framed me!”
He Yin's heart raced with fear as she desperately defended herself. “I really don’t know anything!”
Feeling a surge of frustration, He Yin closed her eyes and pretended to faint.
Just then, someone called for the masked figure from outside, giving He Yin a temporary reprieve from danger.
He Yin straightened her body, still shaken, when another figure in black appeared beside her. Her heart raced again, but upon closer inspection, she recognized the deep black eyes and exclaimed, "It's you."
The figure in black spoke with a firm tone, "You are indeed not one of the Chancellor's people."
"Are you testing me?" He Yin asked, a hint of anger in her voice.
"I just want to know whose side you are truly on," the figure replied.
"I am yours in life and yours in death, Your Highness!" He Yin quickly declared her loyalty.
Qin Xi waved his hand dismissively and turned to leave. Seeing this, He Yin immediately cried out, "Your Highness! Please don’t leave me behind!"
Qin Xi turned his head and said, "Wait for me."
Hearing those words, He Yin felt a bit more at ease.
After a while, the earlier figure in black rushed back in and hoisted He Yin up to carry her outside. She struggled against dizziness and scolded, "Can you be a bit more creative?"
"Shut up!" the figure snapped.
After running for a while, the figure stopped abruptly. Ahead of them stood two groups of people blocking their path. Leading them was Regent, Qin Xi himself. Under the brilliant lantern light, he appeared elegant and imposing.
He Yin felt as if she had encountered a savior.
Qin Xi's cold voice echoed through the night, "Why has the Chancellor sent his men to my residence in the middle of the night to abduct someone? What is going on?"
"My subordinate merely saw her acting furtively and wanted to clear the way for the Prince," the other party said.
"She is mine; it's not your place to clear her out," Qin Xi declared, his gaze sharp and unapologetic.
"Are you trying to take her for yourself?" The elderly man across from him squinted, questioning.
"The Chancellor has always claimed to want to protect the throne, yet now he has kidnapped the current Your Highness. What is his intention? Is it ambition or treachery?" Qin Xi accused, placing a heavy label on the Chancellor, causing the old man to cough repeatedly.
The Chancellor retorted, "She... she is a princess? I don't believe it!"
"The Empress lost a daughter many years ago. Now I have placed her in the royal residence, preparing to report it on an auspicious day," Qin Xi said confidently.
He Yin stood by, feeling lost and her presence diminished in an instant.
Yet she followed Regent's lead and sternly shouted at the black-clad men beside her, "Impudence! Release this princess at once!"
The Chancellor cast a few malicious glances at He Yin before finally ordering the black-clad men to let her go.
Fuming, the Chancellor said, "We'll see about this; I'm waiting for your treasonous act against the throne!"
Qin Xi smiled modestly and beckoned He Yin over.
After playing the role of a princess for a while, and once the Chancellor's men had dispersed, He Yin asked in confusion, "How did I become a princess?"
"I say you are one; therefore, you are," Qin Xi replied nonchalantly.
"Qin Xi, I command you to prepare a soft sedan chair for me immediately. I've been tired all day and need to rest!" He Yin declared, striking a commanding pose.
"Do you really think you're a princess?" Qin Xi mocked.
"Weren't you the one who said I was a princess?" He Yin retorted instantly.
Qin Xi smirked, "Do you know what it means to 'point at a deer and call it a horse'?"
"Are you saying I'm an imposter princess?" He Yin quickly realized.
Qin Xi nodded and said, "You did well today. Tomorrow when I take you into the palace, try to be as emotional as possible."
"How can I pretend?" He Yin asked with some concern.
"You resemble the Empress when she was young," Qin Xi explained.
"Why do you call me an imposter?" He Yin still didn't quite understand.
"I just find you more pleasing to the eye," Qin Xi said, looking at her with an inscrutable smile before falling silent.
He Yin was waiting for him to say more when the system notification chimed again: Regent's favorability towards you has increased.
