"Clang! Clang! Clang!"
William struck the small knife against the axe repeatedly, trying to spark a flame.
His movements were practiced, as if he had done this countless times before. The blade of the axe and the back of the knife clashed, producing a crisp metallic sound. Sparks occasionally flew, landing on a patch of red grease on the ground.
The greasy substance resembled a lump of congealed fat seeping from hell. As the sparks fell, a faint white smoke began to rise from its surface. A rag soaked up the grease and gradually turned black, beginning to smolder, transforming into a makeshift fire starter.
"You really know how to start a fire," Lin Zhao Cheng remarked, squatting nearby with a small knife in hand. He was meticulously selecting from the pile of bloody remnants on the ground, searching for "the meat they were about to eat."
His face was contorted in disgust, brows furrowed, his eyes filled with resistance. Yet his stomach betrayed him with hunger, forcing him to begin his selection.
"What the hell... where did this meat come from? Is it human? Pig? Or that cow?"
He prodded a relatively intact piece of flesh with his knife. It had an eerie red-black color, with clear muscle fibers, but occasionally revealed misplaced fascia and twisted blood vessels that even seemed to twitch slightly.
"Damn! This thing is still moving?!"
Lin Zhao Cheng nearly dropped the meat in shock, suddenly looking up at William with wide eyes.
"Are you sure this is edible?! It feels like it's still alive!"
"Haha, don't be so dramatic."
William smiled as he continued to strike the axe against the knife until the spark began to burn steadily. Satisfied, he paused to toss in some flammable scraps of bone, torn cloth, and dried flesh to intensify the flames.
The fire blazed higher, crackling with a lively sound, its flickering light illuminating the bloodied faces of the two men.
"Don't worry about where this meat comes from; as long as it's edible, that's all that matters," William said, patting Lin Zhao Cheng on the shoulder with the grin of a seasoned hunter.
"Just avoid being picky. Look for those without mouths or eyes," he added.
Lin Zhao Cheng stared at the meat in his hands, feeling a wave of despair wash over him, but ultimately sighed in resignation.
"Damn... how did I end up here in life, reduced to this?"
Regardless, they had to fill their stomachs.
Taking a deep breath, he raised the knife and began to carefully slice the chunks of meat that would soon become their dinner...
"Crackle... crackle..."
The flames licked at the flesh, their orange-red glow dancing in the darkness, bringing a hint of warmth to this eerie space. Yet it also cast shadows over the blood-soaked ground and twisted corpses, making the scene resemble a feast from hell.
The two huddled by the fire, skewering their selected meat onto weapons and starting to roast it.
Lin Zhao Cheng held a bone spear, its tip skewered with several pieces of sinewy meat, which he was turning over the fire. William was more brutal, directly impaling thicker chunks of meat with the handle of his axe, like a barbarian roasting his prey.
The ground was littered with blood and fragments of entrails, and the air was still thick with the stench of decay. At that moment, they could not afford to think about it any longer; they simply sat down to regain some strength.
Lin Zhao Cheng looked at the meat in his hands, feeling numb inside. He didn't want to contemplate what kind of meat it was; he just hoped to finish eating quickly to fill his stomach and continue living.
"Sizzle—!"
As the meat roasted over the flames, its surface began to char slightly, fat oozing out and producing a faint hissing sound. But at that moment… he seemed to hear an extremely faint wail.
"Hiss… woo…"
"…"
Lin Zhao Cheng's movements froze. He raised his head stiffly to look at William, who was leisurely turning the meat in his hands, showing no signs of concern.
"Hey, did you just… hear something?"
"Huh?" William paused for a moment, looking up at Lin Zhao Cheng with raised eyebrows. "No, I only heard the sound of the meat cooking."
Lin Zhao Cheng gritted his teeth, staring at the meat in his hands. He had definitely heard something just now…
"Woo… ah…"
Here it comes again!
This time, it was clearer than before. The sound resembled the final wail of someone pushed to the brink of torment.
"What the hell is that?!"
He yanked the meat off the fire, staring intently at the chunks that had begun to emit a charred aroma. His stomach churned violently, and he nearly retched.
Seeing this, William couldn't help but burst into laughter. He slapped Lin Zhao Cheng on the shoulder and said, "Calm down! Sometimes things here make strange noises even after they’re dead. Just ignore it; the meat will be ready soon."
"Can you not make this sound so casual?!"
"Hahaha! What else should I say? Do you want to starve?"
"…Damn…"
Lin Zhao Cheng was too exhausted to argue. He just wanted to finish this bizarre meal quickly, at least to regain some strength.
Before long, a familiar aroma wafted through the air.
The rich scent of cooked meat began to spread, surprisingly reminiscent of the barbecue he used to enjoy at a grill restaurant, even carrying a certain enticing char that made him swallow hard.
He silently gazed at the golden-brown, slightly crispy meat chunks, his mind in a frantic struggle.
“...Damn, do I really have to eat this...?”
But he had no choice.
He was so hungry that he felt faint.
Finally, Lin Zhao Cheng took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and bit down hard...
“Awwooo—!”
Lin Zhao Cheng sank his teeth into the first piece of meat, and the warm juices burst in his mouth, bringing with them a smoky aroma and a hint of char. As he chewed, he was surprised to find it felt like he was eating barbecue!
He chewed eagerly, his eyes wide with disbelief as he muttered to himself, “Wow... this is really delicious...”
William heard this and burst out laughing, nearly choking on a large piece of meat he had in his mouth.
“Hahaha! I told you! Aren’t you enjoying it?!”
“Shut up!”
Lin Zhao Cheng glared at William with his greasy mouth but continued to take another big bite, showing no signs of stopping.
The two of them were like wild men, completely unconcerned about their image as they tore into the roasted meat. Their teeth sank deeply into the flesh, making sounds of “chewing” and “tearing,” while the tender pieces of meat had a satisfying chewiness that made it all the more enjoyable.
"Damn, if only we had some beer," Lin Zhao Cheng sighed regretfully while chewing.
"Or a can of cola would do... that would make this meal perfect," he added.
William took a big bite of meat and grinned at him teasingly. "Oh, you’re getting picky about pairings now? How’s this hellish barbecue treating your palate?"
"Shut up! If you keep talking, I won’t eat anymore!"
With his mouth full of meat, Lin Zhao Cheng shot William a fierce glare, then stuck out his tongue and made an exaggeratedly disdainful face.
William burst into laughter, then took another large bite, savoring it with delight. "Honestly... this flavor isn’t bad at all."
"What the hell... what kind of meat is this?" Lin Zhao Cheng mumbled as he took another big bite.
But he didn’t want to think about it any longer.
Right now, they just needed to fill their stomachs, regain their strength, and prepare for the next unknown battle...
