Meng Xin followed her cousin's girlfriend, Yu Xian, to Yangcheng. Naturally, Yu Xian's mother welcomed them warmly, knowing that Meng Xin was her boyfriend's cousin. Meng Xin was well-behaved, calling Yu Xian "Sister" in public, but only referred to her as "Sister-in-law" when they were alone together.
During the first two days, Yu Xian asked her brother, Sister-in-law's husband, to drive them around the scenic spots in the suburbs. Sister-in-law was already over five months pregnant, and her belly was starting to show. Her brother took the opportunity to accompany her for more walks, while Meng Xin, visiting the south for the first time, found everything novel and exciting. The four of them had a great time together.
That evening, Yu Xian dressed Meng Xin up beautifully and took her to explore Xinjiangxia Shopping Mall. Before they left, Yu Xian's mother reminded her to pick out a few small pieces of jewelry to bring back for her boyfriend's mother and aunt as gifts.
As soon as Meng Xin arrived at Xinjiangxia, she noticed an abundance of trendy Eastern-style accessories, clothing, and plush toys everywhere. Excitedly, she danced around, wanting to explore every store. Yu Xian also enjoyed shopping, and the two girls chattered away as they wandered from one shop to another, indulging in their shopping spree.
Yu Xian didn’t forget her mother’s request. After they had walked around and their hands were full of bags, she found a Gold Jewelry Boutique and asked the staff to show them some more sophisticated brooches for comparison.
The stores in Xinjiangxia were small; in this one, there were a male and a female clerk behind the counter. The female clerk greeted them while the male clerk chatted with a customer sitting outside the counter. Yu Xian noticed that the male customer kept staring at her. She flicked her hair and ignored him, continuing to browse through the gold jewelry. Every time she glanced up, he was still watching her and even nodded and smiled at her. Feeling that he looked somewhat familiar, she turned back quickly.
Meng Xin was also interested in the accessories but found gold too gaudy and its designs too rigid. As she grew impatient while looking at the jewelry, she said, “Sister-in-law, I want to go get some Braised Delicacies to eat.” Remembering that there were food stalls near the entrance of the shopping area, she wanted to step out for a bit.
“Do you know how to get back?” Yu Xian asked worriedly.
“I do! I’ll be right back,” Meng Xin replied confidently.
Yu Xian reminded her again, “Don’t wander off! Come back quickly.”
After Meng Xin promised and left, Yu Xian turned back to continue looking at the jewelry but found herself dissatisfied with everything she picked up. Suddenly, someone sat down in Meng Xin’s previous spot—it was the male customer.
“Hi!” he greeted her. “You really don’t remember me?”
Initially thinking it was just a typical pickup line from a guy trying to flirt with her, Yu Xian was about to roll her eyes when she realized he looked familiar too. She stared blankly at him for a moment before feeling her face flush red. Noticing her shy reaction, he asked, “Remember now?”
This man was the store manager she had encountered once while shopping with a roommate at a clothing outlet. During that visit, he had taken advantage of her while she tried on clothes in the fitting room. No wonder he looked familiar; it made sense why Yu Xian felt embarrassed.
Both were surprised to run into each other in Yangcheng and simultaneously asked, “What are you doing here?”
Their shared question made them laugh. The store manager replied, “This is a shop I opened with a friend.”
“Wow! You’re a boss now,” Yu Xian exclaimed.
“It’s not much of a business—just a small one—but it’s better than being an employee,” he said with a smile. “So… are you married now?”
